German Shepherds are very good communicators, they're always watching and listening and have a great talent for understanding context. They're some of the few dogs I know of that understand jokes and can intuit things like switches being responsible for lights.

I've adopted a few stray dogs in my life and one was a Belgian Malanois/German Shepard mix who is named Jack. He is 15 years old and now suffering with hip displacia. Without disrespecting my previous dogs, I just have to say that Jack is the smartest dog that I ever came across. I hope to God that if I am reunited in Heaven with anything from this Earth, please God let it be Jack, Suzi, Scruffy and Tabby.

They: * need to be taken care of * love to play * have feelings just like humans * can love/hate cuddles * are naturally curious * can be taught different things * get into mischief * can be very smart * can be needy/clingy * throw tantrums * want to sleep with you * need to be fed regularly * want to eat your food too * want/love to be the center of attention * can be happy to see you come home * can get excited when going to see Grandma/Grandpa * can get excited to go to the park * can be stubborn and not listen * can love/hate going to the Dr's (vet) * have accidents * need to be potty trained * go to daycare * can love/hate baths * wake you in the middle of the night * run to you when scared ... just like a toddler. Did I miss anything? lol My only kids are my feline furbabies. :-)

@@johndoe-sh6bi thank you. I’m all too familiar with it I’m afraid. Teddy was my 8th dog and I’ve lost count how many we had as a family. And probably a a couple of dozen cats. We are in such pain when they leave us- but we need them in our lives. I cannot imagine not having a dog in my life. I still have a Romanian street dog rescue who is the sweetest thing ever. I fully understand….I lost my Shepherd when my parents divorced when I was 12. I still get tears in my eyes over losing him. He was such a great dog & a real ham! He loved to make us laugh…if one of us laughed at something that he did, he would do it over & over to keep us laughing. Best dog ever! I so hope I will see him again! Thanks for sharing.

Linda German Shepherd : My oldest brother had these two German Shepherds, Rebel and Brandy. They were a brother and sister. Their parents were a long haired and short haired "couple". They were very very sweet dogs. Their vet told my brother a few times that they were the two gentlest Shepherds he'd ever seen. The dogs let him do anything to them. They were very trusting. They died of cancer within a year of each other. Anyway, years before they died, my brother's two granddaughters, one was four and the other was six. Rebel and Brandy were the perfect baby sitters. If the two girls were out in the yard, and Rebel and Brandy were babysitting, if anyone came into the yard and the two dogs did not know that person, they would get in front of each girl and either sit, or stand, but they'd smile at that person. They wouldn't growl or snarl or even bare their teeth menacingly. But if you had a brain, you knew not to get any closer.
