No questions here. Only a statement. Well done. Excellent brief. Perhaps...one day, I'll visit. If I reach Scotland, I'll press onward for Shetland. Enjoyed your presentation.

Very informative video. My wife and I want to emigrate there from Australia. I was born in the U.K. but came to Australia when I was little. We're close to retirement and are fed up with the heat here. At the moment it's 38 degrees celsius. We love the cold and rain doesn't bother us. Logistically, it's a big move but we want to do it. We want to live in Scatness. It looks beautiful there.

The weather in a nutshell , blowing a Gail most of the time , raining, you have to love rain , especially horizontal rain, depressing weather. A Shetland doctor told me medical people from the rest of the UK go there to study arthritis and bronchitis. As in the video the person trying to walk while leaning into the wind . Apart from that it is a beautiful place .

How do people just move to such a remote place like Shetland? How do you support yourself? To move to Shetland do you have to be wealthy or is there employment opportunities?. Getting a home to rent or buy is a issue but what about jobs? Maybe make a video on employment and jobs on the island

> How do people just move to such a remote place like Shetland? Remote work makes it possible. Farming, oil and health are big earners on the islands. On Orkney, there is a shortage of healthcare for the elderly inhabitants. Fabrication of various kinds, no doubt, is also a good way. With the cheap excess land, it could be easier to make a business doing that albeit with the higher shipping fees. I've been scoping out a move to Orkney for a while and the hardest part isn't recruitment, its rental accomodation. If you want to move without much prospects to such a place, it would be wise to consider how self-sufficient you are willing to be. You could, for example, purchase a caravan or lodge and place it on some land you purchased but this would involve connecting to the grid for water/electricity, various repairs (with the high winds) and disposal. That is if the council agrees to let you do it! If you have the money for it, long-term renting out accomodation on the islands might be an earner too since it is often difficult to find rental housing which isn't short-term on these places. This surely must place the young adults of the island in a predicament!

It’s great to hear from you throughout all this time Claude. It’s nice to see your fun and sometimes wacky comments. :) Spain is a long way from Quebec.. but it’s worth it. I’ve heard you can walk across Canada, but I imagine that’d be quite scary with the bears.

@@TangerineHorizons walking across Canada is doable but expensive because there are no albergues/Quebec is just starting to organize and we have a Compostelle club (over 2000 members) however Europe is still the best. Hi, I think this is what more people need to hear. I was speaking to a Shetland-based removal man earlier this year and he said they're moving as many people out as into Shetland. He told me a lot of people are loosing a lot of money because life in Shetland was not what they thought it would be and so they cut their losses and go back to England.

Thanks for sharing this. It is a reality many people are blinkered to when they see the pictures of white sandy beaches and turquoise waters. Like anywhere, nothing is perfect and remote island life requires some degree of sacrifice, in one or several areas of life. I’m hoping this video supports people to make the best decision for their circumstances.

As regards visas, the same rules apply as do in the rest of the UK. It depends on what sort of work you’re looking for.. it’s best to search online as regards your particular field. :)

Nice video. Is there a language barrier for people moving from other areas of the UK?. Obviously, English is the main language. However, many of the islanders I've spoken to often comment on Shetlandic being the primary dialect. How difficult is it to communicate or fit in with locals ? . In other islands such as the Outer Hebrides. Gaelic is used as a principle form of communication in some places. Thanks
@TangerineHorizons
@TangerineHorizons Жыл бұрын
No language barrier, there are certain words or phrases from the dialect you will quickly adapt to particularly if you are familiar with general Scottish phrases. Like anywhere, it depends on what your interests are and what’s available. For musicians or artists, I imagine fitting in with pose would prove straightforward. Shetlanders are familiar with people coming and going so I think if you are likely to leave it would be harder to establish strong ties. No Gaelic in Shetland.

'Soothmoothers' as in the locally used term, refers to people who came into Shetland through the 'Sooth Mooth' (south mouth) of Lerwick harbour. This was the main entry point to Shetland

I have lived in Shetland for 9 years. I have found them on the main to be the most racist people in Britain, yet they seem to forget incomers out number the locals. They don’t like to be told the truth. The inter island ferry service is one of the worst council services i have ever seen, there are a few really nice crew members but most are complete arses.

I think your comment about Shetland being the most racist place in Britain being very strong. You are correct, Incomers are a big population to Shetland. Our ferry service is run by probably 80% of incomers (soothmoothers) so it might of possible been them you met? I have never actually felt any ferry crew to be horrible or comte arses and our ferry service cost is one of the cheapest in the UK.

Racist against who exactly? I've lived here all my life and I wouldn't say it's any more racist than anywhere else in the UK. The high school i went to was 99% white and those who were of other races certainly weren't picked on because of that. And incomers outnumbering the locals, where exactly? Perhaps on certain islands such as Fair Isle but on the mainland that is FAR from the truth lol
