fun fact: the original song was over 6 minutes long but the band were only given a 4.5 minute slot in this program. instead of performing a different song, (or an abridged version) they simply played it at a higher tempo.

Apparently, the idea of this song was born when the singer, joking around during recording, started yodeling for fun on top of the riff. The band and the producer liked it. So, rather than chemical drugs, this is just born of the power of people having fun. And a lot truckload of skill, ofc. It's told by the singer himself in a mini-documentary on youtube about the history of this soung. Don't have the link, but you can find it with a quick search, I'm sure.

In the UK at least, back at the 2010 world cup, Nike did a load of cool adverts with legends like Rooney, Drogba, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho etc but they used Hocus Pocus as the soundtrack. I expect in the UK it will be more well known than elsewhere as a result!

Just saw Focus perform this past weekend, as an opening act for Asia. They performed this song, and it was one of those "A-HA" moments because I had heard this song several times over the years, and it's hard to forget, but I never knew who the band/artist was. So that was pretty cool. Even at 76 yrs old Thijs van Leer still pulled off the yodeling.

Nice transcription! I just noticed something a bit interesting from 0:56 to about 1:01; it has been written in the same manner as earlier in the yodel bit, even though the chords were in a major form this time. I would have transcribed the notes as such: E c# E E D b D D C# a C# C# B g# B B A f# A A G# E G# G# F# D# E And the chords as: A, E7, F#m, C#m7, D7, A7, B, E I really appreciate the transcription though; I've been watching the original video on repeat because I thought the live adaptation was crazy. It's really a masterclass in extended vocal techniques that you just don't hear very often in this sort of musical context. Not just the yodeling but deep vocal fry (basically the opposite of the more commonly used falsetto,) eefing (the almost-beatboxing thing he does,) multiple kinds of whistling, screaming, and basically every other thing that will make a voice teacher feal like slapping you.
