Knew you where going to have a go on this one at one point. Magma's "Otis" next? Absolutely bonkers and over the top Otis Redding tribute, with some highly unconventional vocal techniques by the drummer and main composer of that band, sang in a a self made language called Kobaian. fun fact: the original song was over 6 minutes long but the band were only given a 4.5 minute slot in this program. instead of performing a different song, (or an abridged version) they simply played it at a higher tempo.

Apparently, the idea of this song was born when the singer, joking around during recording, started yodeling for fun on top of the riff. The band and the producer liked it. So, rather than chemical drugs, this is just born of the power of people having fun. And a lot truckload of skill, ofc. It's told by the singer himself in a mini-documentary on youtube about the history of this soung. Don't have the link, but you can find it with a quick search, I'm sure.

They performed this song, and it was one of those "A-HA" moments because I had heard this song several times over the years, and it's hard to forget, but I never knew who the band/artist was. I just noticed something a bit interesting from 0:56 to about 1:01; it has been written in the same manner as earlier in the yodel bit, even though the chords were in a major form this time. I would have transcribed the notes as such: E c# E E D b D D C# a C# C# B g# B B A f# A A G# E G# G# F# D# E And the chords as: A, E7, F#m, C#m7, D7, A7, B, E I really appreciate the transcription though; I've been watching the original video on repeat because I thought the live adaptation was crazy. Hocus Pocus by Focus has always stood out to me as what happens when you take a vocalist who knows how to yodel and has a predilection for Jon Lord and Rick Wakeman, gives him bucket of cocaine and an organ and say "knock yourself out"... Somehow they ended up with a masterpiece of prog-yodeling...

Just out of curiosity: How often do you think about what happens when you give buckets of cocaine and an organ to different 'yodeling vocalists with predilection for Jon Lord and Rick Wakeman' to see what happens when you tell them to 'knock themselves out'??

@@Trubbas Man, I was just thinking that again the other day! Comes up in conversation all the time.

@@micahphilson Good tip. My reoccurring thought is what happens when you take a vocalist who knows how to play the flute and has a predilection for Jon Field and J.D Hughes, gives him a bucket of cocaine and dress him like a ballet caveman and tell him to 'behave like an absolute mad man'... Will try yours!
