Because in the past sending foreign care packages and ordering things from other countries used to be a near impossibility. Either it was prohibitively expensive, or you couldn't trust the mail service, or it was outright impossible to do as a private person. So in many cases this way was the only way people could send things to people in other countries and trust that it would end up where they wanted it to.

This is also a Bangladeshi - Indian - Pakistani - Afghan - Sri Lankan- Nepali thing. Trust me. Once in 2006 when my family were going back to Bangladesh my mum said to one of my aunt's ( cousin aunt's - those who are immigrants know hahaha our family lineage can go back to Queen Victoria hahah) we are going on a Wednesday ( summer holiday starting date). You won't believe it, both aunt and uncle had the audacity to call in sick at work on Monday and guess what they ended up going fricking Matalan and Primark to purchase some goods to give to their tribe. They did their shopping and then called my mum in the evening to say we have items to send. My brothers and sisters of KZbin - they bought 1.5 suitcases to send , they even bought a new suitcase to send. 40 kilos to send, what about ours. My mum turned around and said I will take 5-10 pieces of clothing but that's it. They were hurt, lool they didn't even talk to us for 2 years after. Hahaha. Long story apologies but this clip isn't even exaggerating. Now when we go we don't say when we going !

This isn't just African. I'm a white guy from rural Canada. Whenever you go anywhere, you have to take at least one cardboard box full of local stuff for someone's relative who lives on the Mainland. People even post things on social media asking things like "Is anyone going to Toronto who can take a Care Package (that's what a box full of local goodies is called) to my granddaughter in Missasauga?" Lol. I think it's because rural people live a more "traditional" lifestyle, and I think that a lot of Africans have the same kind of "help your neighbours, treasure your family, share with others because we all need each other to survive" mentality. I think that's pretty common around the world outside North America and Europe, though it still survives in some places, like here. The similarities between us are more important than our differences.

You don't have to be of African descent to identify with this. With Croatians, as soon as the "community" finds out you're going home to the "old country", little old Aunties appear from everywhere to give you packets of money to give to relatives back in the village. It's a responsibility that you really don't need or want when on holiday. Like the young couple in the clip, it pays to "sneak away" and not tell anyone...if you can!!
