Is it not possible to fabricate a spacer - or even an entire bearing block if needed - to compensate from the 50mm or so that the ball screw falls short? A 30mm aluminium spacer maybe attached to the inside of the frame and the existing bearing block mounted onto that.... This would cause you to lose that small bit of travel in Y axis but seems to be a quick and uncomplicated fix, both easier and less irreversible than reducing your existing frame (maybe a future project will give the opportunity to buy bigger ball screw/smaller linear rail). BTW thank you Roger for all the awesome work, I have followed you since your 3018 series and love both your ideas and the way you present them, a true inspiration :)

My homemade cnc router was getting a little noisy moving in the x axis, so I decided to put some lithium grease on all the ball screws. As I was using my machine, I realized that the ball nut did not travel the entire length of the screw. This is because I mounted a linear bearing near each end of the slides limiting the amount of travel it can have.. The set of rails and ball screw I got were the same lengths. I realize that if I just get longer rails, I could increase the travel of each axis and thus the size of my work area. I would, of course, have to rebuild the machine for the larger work bed.
