when your favourite guitar student might literally have adhd

A massive proportion of musicians and artists present an incredible ability to hyper focus their attention on stimulating tasks that they’re interested in while simultaneously struggling greatly to prioritise tasks day to day.
This results in an obsessive amount of attention given to one thing at the cost of near everything else in that time frame and is behaviour that often never gets checked because the student will be seen working hard and developing skills in seemingly very short time frames.
However in order to develop consistency and work ethic it’s healthier to develop the ability to prioritise not only the work you want to do but the work you may be struggling to focus on right in front of you

@@atutahi This video is me right now, I always forget my assignments because I am too busy trying to learn a new Dream Theater or Metallica song and only remember an hour before my next lesson and then try to get it done in that time. Which has only worked once until now, but hey, even if I don't do my assignments, jamming to Dream Theater or Metallica with my teacher is still awesome.

Honestly i think thats why we excell at things like this. Self taught, and you learn what YOU find interesting. Which in my opinion is the whole point. Lessons are ok, but it can ruin your interest if its boring.

As a guitarist and cellist with ADHD, this is so true lol. Or you come in with a new technique that you just kinda picked up and messed around with and just spent a week doing that and occasionally the other stuff. The first time I discovered ricochet bow was just me doing that for a week and not even caring. As a self-taught guitarist (playing about 7 years) it can be really hard to stick with learning/ improving a new song. I just want to jam to something else or I start messing around with pedals and loops exploring weird rhythms and polytonal textures. Your content is awesome man, glad youtube decided to start suggesting it to me.

I used to do this in my flute and piano lessons literally ALL the time. I would actively not do the thing I was supposed to be doing without even meaning to. I just got distracted by a mistake that sounded like a different song and 5 hours later I'd played through every song on my iPod and not even done the first line of the piece I was learning. I honestly have no idea how I never got diagnosed - well actually I do because almost all of my hyperactivity was mental which meant that I absorbed EVERYTHING in lessons and passed all of my tests without studying, and therefore I wasn't seen as disruptive enough to have ADHD because we all know that people still just see it as the "can't sit still OOOH SQUIRREL" disorder *deep breath*. I wasn't diagnosed with Autism for similar reasons - I was capable of eye contact and talking to people.

I'm in this video and I don't like it(I jest of course. This was hilarious haha). Though it does make me appreciate one big thing about my teacher, and it's the fact that if I didn't practice the material he wants me to work on, he shows me ways I can incorporate said material into the songs I was goofing off with so that way I can still practice what he showed me, but in a song I'm familiar with. Definitely appreciated that a ton about him.

The hyperfocus can also be a side-effect from medication. I think ADHD is rather easy to explain, without taking anything away. The disorder/variation/whatever floats your boat really is due to a faulty mechanism for short-memory recall. It might sound mild enough, but it affects intellectual development and thought processes. Being flexible and incredibly mutable, the brain will develop ways to compensate that which the environment demands but the brain lacks. This can lead to hyperactivity, but also hyperfocus. Hyperfocus is rather a misnomer, but more of a rampant, uncontrolled "psychological flow". We've all experienced flow before, and you may recognize how time flew by super-fast, well, there's almost no subconscious thought processes during flow, and thus almost no short-term memory recall. Due to coping mechanisms found in ADHD people serving as a work-around, concentration will manifest as narrow and abnormally heightened. Sometimes the strategies and tactics we develop as we go can backfire, especially if we do not watch ourselves, because far from all are of one's own purposeful design. But tactics can be improved, and strategies swapped. In the end, free will is the superpower everyone has but are increasingly told isn't even real.
@atutahi

Agreed! Not to mention for each individual it will likely present differently due to environment etc thanks for your thoughts!

This is me but with piano and synths. Why play the normal sounding voices when you can make your synth sound like a robotic dystopian war zone

Lol this is my friend/guide. He really expects me to finish a whole song while i study something else. Sometimes i get too depressed that i have trouble making coffee. But im getting there. Im learning in my own phase, not because im stubborn or too egotistic to learn but i just literally cant sit my ass If i dont understand the purpose of what im doing. That to me is learning rhythm and such are way way more apex to my learning than learning to solo all of a sudden

Though I've never had a teacher, just learning random shit is how I roll lol. Often jumping back and forth between things a lot. I do put in the hours though and I like to select songs that really challenges me on specific techniques.
