when your serpentine belt breaks (what to look for)

2007 Volvo S40 new tensioner replaced from alternator to ac. Replace the alternator with new tensioner. Drove fine for three days no codes. Belt broke from Crankshaft to AC compressor. After replacing broke belt. Crank no Start. All wheels on tensioners are fine. Crankshaft works fine. Any suggestions?

Hi @@5thsNGunz wow that’s a good question. I don’t know why the car won’t start a car will start without the serpentine belt. Just make sure all the pulleys are spinning, which you already did. I. know on some BMWs when the serpentine breaks the crankshaft will suck it up into the engine I’ve experienced that. I don’t know if the Volvo has that problem. Maybe the belt hit some sensor and broke it. Check all the sensors around there. Thanks for watching. I really appreciate you.

I think my belt broke while driving. My car was smoking, and stalled but I pulled over. It’s night , I can’t see a belt, car won’t start. I’m not sure what’s wrong, but I was hearing that squeaky noise when the car started. I hope my engine isn’t busted, I can’t afford another car.

Hi. I just got a new water pump installed on my 2008 Buick Enclave and the belt shredded the same day. Any idea why?

Hi @@davetheg28 very sorry to hear that. Yes, you could’ve had an old worn out belt if the belt wasn’t changed or check all your pulleys AC compressor alternator see if the bearings are good and the pulley is spinning. Also, just check the water pump and see if it’s spinning without the belt on very rare, but I’ve gotten new parts that were defective. Thanks for watching. I really appreciate you.

What if the belt smokes and burn off and breaks. Is it normally the tensioner sliding off the belt causing friction? Or could be a compressor heating off the belt ?

Hi @user-vf3lx9qr2n like I said it could be as BBC simple as the belt was old and busted but usually when they smoke it’s a pulley that probably froze up could be AC compressor idler pulley, tensioner pulley. Just check your pulleys before you put a new belt on spin all the pulleys and see if they spin freely and if they do then put the belt on and see what happens thanks for watching. My belt came off, because the brand new belt tensioner I bought snaped off at the bolt, so now I got a bolt in the engine. Do you have any Idea what could cause the tensioner to snap off?
