Resilience, a bivvy and a sense of humour saves the day in a worse case wild camping scenario as my Lanshan 2 tent collapses in high winds and torrential rain half way up Rhinog Fach. The video starts with a beautiful start to my day and a stunning hike through the Rhinogs, but goes on to feature TWO tent collapses. Yes, TWO!....... Join me, for my third wild camp and a steep midlife learning curve in the welsh mountain ranges of Snowdonia. #wildcamping #wildcampinguk #camping #fail #middleaged #female #snowdonia #british #badweather #rain #campingdisaster #rhinogfach #rhinogs #campingfail #funny

Have to admire your resilience. Quite a few mistakes but you bounced back. Well done. Did you buy the Soulo ? Beauty of a Hilleberg tent is that it retains a lot of its value. I've had several and just bought a Niak which will need 10mm poles, but is half the weight of the Soulo and plenty of space. The Unna with 10mm poles is really good, but I think I'll prefer the porch on the Niak. Good luck.

Consider getting a wild shield for that stove of yours. It is so popular amongst KZbin walkers not to use a wind shield and if much of your learning has come from other videos you will not have been set a good example. This would both reduce your gas use significantly and get you a hot brew more quickly without your flame ever blowing out.

Hey thewestonfront! I do have a wind shield, but I never end up packing it due to the weight. I really don't understand why people try and use trekking pole tents in super windy conditions. It's just not the right tool for the job. @@WeekendWildling before I got my hilleberg is used my fjallraven abisco light 1, it's half the price of my hilleberg black label , but it has been up mountains and survived 70mph. It is my favourite tent ( have not been able to really test my hilleberg yet,, apparently there may be strong winds next week, so hopefully then ).. My fjallraven is probably a couple of inches to low for me , am seriously considering getting the abisco light 2, it's a tunnel tent , and I don't have a tunnel tent, you can sit up in it ... when I paid the money for the hilleberg I made the decision to pay the little bit extra for the black label, my reasoning being why pay all that money to buy the second best tent when the best is just a little bit extra.. good luck to you whatever and whenever you decide to press the button.

If you are going to be camping in those kind of conditions you should probably be looking at a tent from Hilleberg (Red or Black Label) or other high end brands that are designed to handle high wind/rain/snow. It is also crucial to fully peg and guyline your tent, using pegs appropriate for the terrain, to make it as structurally sound as possible for bad weather. Typical consumer tents cannot take even half that level of wind without failing, and ultralight can be even worse as they sacrifice pole and material strength for less weight. Some trekking pole tents can handle higher wind but they rely heavily on the supporting guyline pegs to not pull out, which can be tricky to achieve on that kind of rocky long grass mushy terrain (freestanding tent would work better). Oh and earplugs are a good idea for high wind. Good video though.

Your comment is music to my ears! I've been putting the brown Hilleberg soulo red label in and out of my online shopping cart since I came back from this trip in April! Feeling torn, due to the price.... So expensive! But I also know I work really hard in my day job and should not only invest in playtime, but also invest in my safety. Your comment might be what finally takes me to the checkout page! I do have better pegs (faves are my Delta pegs), but unfortunately, I still have a lot to learn and went on this trip unprepared... I'm so grateful for the tips and tricks shared by the community on here. Outdoor enthusiasts unite! Thanks for watching and thanks for your guidance!

Stuff those high end brands, far too expensive… if you’re looking for a fantastic low cost tent that out performs high end brand the (OEX BOBCAT 1) is the tent to go for, it’s literally bombproof, takes 70mph winds like it’s nothing and torrential rain… been about for a while, could pick one up for 50 quid no more than a few months ago, but since the recent surge in popularity it’s gone up to around 100 quid… it’s still more than worth it at that price out performs tent 300 pounds dearer, quality tent

Elaine..frad I've got to correct your historical timeline there: 2:20 - 2:25. Medieval by the very definition means the 'middle' ages, ie between the Roman occupation approx 40 AD - 400 AD and the renaissance period (500 - 1500 AD). Ergo 'IF' those stones were put there by the Romans; it was done so 500 yrs before the 'medieval'; period which started after the end of the western Roman Empire.
@WeekendWildling
@WeekendWildling 15 күн бұрын
Hey Maxspeed! I always welcome a fact check! Historical legacy is important and I'm a curious soul who loves to soak up history about early civilisations. From the little there is out there about these 'Roman Steps' it seems that many people are assuming them to be Roman in name alone, and more likely to be a Medieval packhorse trail, so I was quoting that really. If I was guessing (as that is really all I do can with such limited info out there) I'm thinking, that perhaps there was originally a roman road/path and it was heavily reconstructed in Medieval times, as I also read somewhere that the style of what remains looks more Medieval. What I should have said in the video is ''these have definitely been here since Medieval times, but it's not clear if they age back as far as The Roman Era.' If you or anyone else reading this knows more about them, I'd love to know. I really wondered myself as I was walking them. They are amazing. Miles of slabs and rocks and the craftsmanship on the little bridges is incredible! 🥾🏛️
