Yup, I part timed as a tour guide for a few years before (tour bus for school field trip) and it is hard. Specially since we don't just go to one site. The number of pages we had to memorize each and every time we do tours is a bit overwhelming. Essentially parang teachers kami. 😅

11:07 I have to correct Kuya Guide here. Islam arrived to the Philippines only around a century before the Spanish. It was ALSO a very new religion back then. Only a few ethnic groups were Muslim, and even then, not completely. During the arrival of the Spanish, the groups which had the most Muslim conversions were the Sulu Tausugs, the Tawi-Tawi Sama-Bajau, and the Manila Tagalogs. These were the groups which had the strongest connections to Brunei. Even then, it was restricted largely to the ruling classes, who converted via intermarriage with Brunei nobility. The rest of the ethnic groups in the Philippines remained animistic (worshiping anito ancestor spirits) or influenced by Hinduism (which was similar to anito worship anyway). That includes the OTHER Tagalog groups (the ones who are not from the polity of Manila), like the Tagalog people of Tondo, Bulacan, Marinduque, Cavite, Laguna, and Batangas, who were animist. It also includes all Visayans (Cebuanos, Ilonggos, Waray, Butuanon, Surigaonon, etc.), and the other Luzon groups like the Kapampangans, Cordillerans, Ibanag, Bikol, Ilokos, and Sambals. Also most of Mindanao, which even today are NOT actually majority Muslim. Most of the Lumad, Kalagan, and Visayan natives of Mindanao never converted, because they weren't allies of the Tausug or Brunei. The Maguindanao, Maranao, and Iranun converted to Islam gradually DURING the Spanish colonial period, due to their alliance with the Tausug. Others like the Yakan and the Sangir people converted even later (19th to 20th centuries).

Agree! From the Manila ruler's title "Rajah" which is from Hindu, so Manila was a Rajanate kingdom when the Spaniards arrived. Muslim kingdoms are called Sultanate ruled by a Sultan.
@tonettesaldana3134 Жыл бұрын
Thank you for the important information!
@Kariktan214 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for commenting this. Although kuya guide is knowledgeable, he is wrong in Islam being the dominant religion in the Philippines back then. Every groups has their own set of beliefs.
@AngryKittens Жыл бұрын
@@shredernie Actually, the title is kind of irrelevant. The datu of larger trading cities like Cebu, Manila, Butuan, Sulu, etc. tend to adopt foreign titles because it sounded nicer. Things like "Rajah", "Sultan", "Sri"/"Seri"/"Si", "Batara", etc. But yes, as identified by Spanish records, the vast majority of Tagalogs still practiced anito worship. But Islam was already present, and were also identified by the Spanish (who were already familiar with Muslims from the Reconquista back in Spain). They even mentioned a mosque and an imam called a "siyak". It was a minority religion though, and among the few common folk who converted, it was still kind of syncretized with local beliefs - folk Islam. However, the ruling family of Manila, at least starting from Rajah Matanda, was Muslim. He is mentioned as being the grandson of the Sultan Bolkiah (the first, a.k.a. "Sultan Salan") of Brunei. It was common in the pre-colonial period for royal and noble families to intermarry other royal/noble families from other city-states, since purity of descent was one of the most important criteria for the right to rule. Don Agustin de Legazpi, the last ruler (largely ceremonial, not actual) of Tondo and heir of Lakandula started his rebellion because the Spanish arrested him for giving his mother an Islamic burial (even though he had already converted to Christianity).

Upon watching this, I remembered our mock tour guiding last july, also in Intramuros. Understanding and absorbing all the necessary information about Intramuros is not easy. There’s too much information and there are certain information that will get you confused with other facts. I was tasked at Fort Santiago so I was also sad Jessica didn’t get to tour Fort Santiago. Congratulations! I guess this is the most educational or historically educational "Trabaho" episode you ever had. You took time to read and memorize bunch of history. That's a very challenging task. Your vievers definitely learn something new or have renewed the historians in their heart such as me. I have seen those places many time. You know, despite the sad history with the Spaniards, I am still super glad for the good they brought in, and the BEST of them is the CHRISTIAN FAITH. It was INFORTUNATE for Mindanao that they were left out. And look what happened when the ISIS came and made war. So sad. And look how we Celebrate Christmas, let thank Catholism for it. 😊 I love history. Being a tourist guide would be one of my dream jobs. You share what you learn especially your own culture and history. In a way I can relate to this because I am a Volunteer Catechist, so I teach we are under the DepEd, so technically speaking I am a teacher. I also share history lesson to my listeners and students. Two thumbs up Jessica!

I felt her touring to the bones. It's important for tourist guides to make tourists feel that they feel the places they're in. it's just so sad it has to rain for that day, Intramuros has much to offer, like Rizal museum, the dungeons, the baluarte, and also the foods at the restaurants near the location. This is a great content at the wrong time. I can see the potential of the tour guiding if it wasn't for that damn rain. Good job Jessica! Kuya Russelle just observed and gave you advice along the way. It's great that he really trusted you to do a job well done and you did. Thank you for being interested in our country and history, Jessica. And, ngl, seeing you conduct the tour with poise and your knowledge of the place, I can see potential in you being a tour guide, no kidding. You can even be a host of a travel show if given the opportunity. And, if you want to gain experience, you could even go through the 1-week intensive training Sir Russelle mentioned. I believe you'd ace it! I would also like to note that your previous episodes about the Philippines came in handy because you were able to use your stock knowledge. Kudos to you and Sir Russelle's team for pulling off a great tour despite the unfortunate circumstances due to the weather. As a Manileno myself, I'm currently studying at a university located in Intramuros, but because I've got no time due to school and personal life, I haven't really explored the whole place. Wow I learned more about about PH. I can only imagine what the Japanese military did there but also the Spaniards. Part of it reminded me how they used to say Christopher Columbus "discovered America". PH is one of the top countries in SE Asia i wouldnt mind moving considering theyre open & similar to my culture. Even though Jessica overdressed she looked good & did a job well done 👏🏽

GRABE. Sobrang great job as a tourist guide, Miss Jessica! I am proud to say na you are an honorable Filipino to me. Kung pwedeng maging part-time job mo yan, mag-ttour ako kahit na second home ko ang Intramuros nung bata ako. Kudos to this series!

Woowww!!! The effort grabe... This is one of the best and pagod serye.. learning all of the history to deliver sa mga tourists ... Ito pinakamahirap kasi gamit na gamit yung utak mo dito. hahahaaa Kaya kudos to Jessica.. I would say ito pinakamahirap na trabaho series and I'm also hoping a really nice weather pero umulan which I'm also sad. Nakakahaggardo versosaa yung ulan. But overall, one of the BEST!!!!! Thank you Jessica.. napaka entertaining nito! 👏👏👏

I remember our first tour here was condutcted by the late Carlos Celdran. Tinanong ko sya if ano ang lahi ang favorite nyang i-tour sa intramuros, and he also answered the Filipinos. Because no one will the Philippines more than the Filipinos ourselves. Wala lang. share ko lang. Good job ms Jessica!

I'd be interested to hear Jessica talk in Hilagaynon, considering her Bacolod upbringing. Greetings from California. 😊
