Wow! Lori this was such an interesting to learn about. I look forward to the following videos of this documentary. A friend of mine has a wife he brought over from China. When He was in China courting her she took him to the Apple factory, and he bought a brand new top of the Line Iphone but at a fraction of the cost because he bought it white labelled. The same phone in the same factory line being created without being white labelled came from the same line as the latestvtop of the line iphone at the top of the line price too. I never knew this practice was done with art supplies, and now wonder about our food. Its a scary thought when it comes down to what wevput on or in our bodies.

I’m totally excited for this! For awhile I felt myself becoming obsessed with all these different brands and pencil sets coming out. I’ve only bought a couple sets (arteza, schp.farben) just to go back to my fabers, prismas, or pablos. While I agree there are some decent quality brands coming from PRC, I haven’t really come across a brand that has the richness in pigment that Faber and Caran d’ache offers. Don’t get me wrong though my arteza get quite a lot of use. Thanks for this informative discussion! I learned so much and my brain feels better for it!

Ones that make their own are Derwent in Cumbria England, Holbein in Japan, Faber-Castell in Germany and Caran D'ache in Switzerland. Prismacolors now made cheaply and colour cores and not centred. Berol Krisma-colour pencils was in UK, owned by Sandford that made Prismacolors in US. Until it relocated it's pencil manufacture to Mexico.

Love this! You’d be surprised of how many luxury items are made in China. The difference sometimes lies in going to China and do a face to face negotiation with the factory. For example, Costco’s Kirkland is a white label brand from top quality companies from all over the world ❤️❤️❤️ If we took out of our homes all Chinese items or items that have Chinese parts in them, you would be surprised on how empty your house would look!

Shuttle art has two different pencils or improved on one. The 172 set is crap. The 174 set was much better. The increased the size of their core to a 4.0. It made a big difference. In the video I put up two Prismacolor sets. One was real and one was fake. The fake one was missing the Prismacolor logo at the top. Prismacolor doesn't sell half painted tins. Also when you zoom really close you can see the picture is slightly different. The hair on the girl was shaded differently. On another tin I zoomed into the foot of a girl and on the Prisma tin there was a silver band. One the fake there was no silver band. It was a lot like playing the game "Which one is different". That was my favorite game as a kid so I enjoyed this part a lot.

See my rant above....what you are describing is how the "Ali" companies work no matter what the product is. 1 product and slap 100s of different brand names on it. Nothing but garbage and don't waste your time with their customer service for any of the "Ali" sourced products they don't care and as other artists are finding out they send out "canned" email replies with bogus explanations that all basically say, "screw you we don't care about fixing problems with our cheap products" and would rather just send money back to the very few people that do complain or they send you on "wild goose chases" because they point fingers hoping that if they frustrate the customer they will just throw their hands up and go away. No quality and no accountability and no care. Just simply screw you give me your money so I can rip you off with garbage products.

Faber Castell have ‘been around’ since 1761, not 1908. They started making Polychromos pencils in 1924 (same year as Caran d’Ache started manufacturing coloured pencils) after years of testing. The concept of the coloured pencil itself was invented in 1834 by Johann Staedtler.

Wow! Thanks, Lori. This was an interesting and informative video and I really look forward to the series! I was browsing pencils on amazon just yesterday, and it seemed like more and more often it's like guessing, gambling and crossing fingers. I'm curious about the consistency and standards of "mid-level" pencils and also the different types and price ranges within companies like Holbein and Derwent, for example. Personally, I really like my Black Widow pencils; lots of reasons, one is that I was able to buy one set a time with no repeats. I finally bought 6 polychromos and I like them, but I like the gold faber almost as much- and they're much more affordable. Although I'm on the fence about Prismacolors, I do wish I'd waited and bought the 150 instead of the 72; I don't relish the thought of buying 78 more pencils individually but it would be nice to follow along with tutorials or color alongs without having to make substitutions, and I never have all or even most of the colors people are using. SO, I love that you're doing a documentary series!!
@ColorMyWorld
@ColorMyWorld 3 жыл бұрын
Black Widow are one I like, but the sets are too gimick. Those are budget pencils with the gimick aimed at you buying more. They lose a lot from me. I bought the 48 set and there are no red pencils at all. Not a very functional set. When you finish buying all the sets you have paid more than you would have a Prismacolor set and I don't love them that much. I agree with you on the gold faber. They were just nice and I am happy with them. Another good one was Crayola Signature but they run on the expensive side of budget pencils. Marco Renoir is another good one. I don't like the Raffini, but the Renoirs are great. I doubt I'll ever buy the Masters because again, it's gimicky. The Prismacolor Scholars were good and if you wait for them to restock the Amazon Basics are almost identical in color to the Prismacolor pencils. They only have the 24 on sale now. Hopefully they will get the same pencils back in. It's been a while and they may not. It can come back a totally different pencil. We have to wait and see.

As I get further into the hobby I'd like to get nicer pencils. This video was an eye opener for sure (though not surprising when I think about it! My question is, which pencils companies manufacture their own pencils? Those are the people I will buy from because I'd like to support them.
@ColorMyWorld
@ColorMyWorld 3 жыл бұрын
Prismacolor pencils are manufactured by Prismacolor and so are Farber Castel. BUT, they are owned by the same corporation. Two different companies one parent corporation. It wasn't always like that and they are very different pencils. Both highly recommended and good quality. Look for pencils that sell stock pencils. Those are companies that own their own manufacturers or have more control over the quality.

By the way, check out the description of the Shuttle Arts set of 174 on Amazon. There is a rather hilarious typo which they repeat with their 180 set and on their site! They talk about the pencils being in a "sturdy mental case". That and stilted English is pretty much a dead giveaway, IMHO. I still bought them because it made me laugh and I wanted all the colors - or just have a nice mental case.

Very good video. About the counterfeit manufacturers: First, could these be the same people out of China who create the budget pencils with different brand names? Second, I wonder why they aren't faking where the counterfeit pencils are made, such as in the U. S. And/or Mexico?
@ColorMyWorld
@ColorMyWorld 2 жыл бұрын
They aren't really fake pencils. They are pencils that are produced that are used for many brands. It's called white label. Normally they are cheap grade and often the company doesn't even bother to pay for the printing of new names or numbers. They just pack them into a different tin (sometimes they don't even do that). They can't fake where they come from because the Govt has testing standards for pencils so they are not toxic. All brands have to say the country of origin. You can't import pencils without it.

Just slightly off topic but sort of related - in relation to couneterfeits. Amazon Uk were selling replacment blades for a sharpener. I purchased them from a Market seller as Amazon were out of stock, thinking they were the real thing and they were not. I decided to go on a mission. I contacted the seller and asked why the blades they sent were not as maked in the description. The explanation they gave did not convicne me - I know BS* when it is being shovelled. So.. I contacted the manufacturer in Germany and asked them to point me to a supplier in the UK. I was given the details and contacted them and purchased a genuine set of blades - over priced - but I was determined to tackle this. The reason why I did this was because in the reviews there was clearly some issue as to whether the blades were genuine or not - depending on whether they were from Amazon direct or a market seller. Armed with my evidence I confronted the seller again. Infact when I dug deeper this same seller was not only selling the 'genuine' blades on Amazon but the fakes blades for over £1 cheaper calling them generic genuine blades and it was the same product. I was ...angry.... The seller immediatley refunded my money and told me to keep the blades. I then decided to contact Amazon. I used the web chat service and it was not an easy encounter - if you have ever used that service in the UK - you will get my drift. i got more and more exasperated as the person I was 'chatting' to did not understand what I was saying - but when I started saying it was false misrepresentation and breach of the Trades Descrption Act - they cut off the chat. I was furious. I decided to give up but was determined I was not letting it go. A few days later I decided to resume the battle. However when I looked again - the product was only avaialble from Amazon and no Market Seller were being offered as an alternative...interesting. I waited and then the price dropped by about 40% so i decided to purchase to see what turned up - and got - the genuine blades. If we stand up to counerfeit goods then it will drive the fakers out but it takes time and effort and be prepared to make a lotof noise about it. I feel a small sense of satisfaction. While the price was so low I bought a couple of more - and believe me I checked every blade and cut up my fingers in the process to make sure I was not being ripped off.

I got them, they didn't feel right. They were light. And there wasn't a good wood smell to them. So I called Fabre Castell and found out that they have been having issues with non authorized sellers on Amazon. In my case the seller name was one letter off from a legit seller. And of course they were fake. I ended up filing a complaint against the seller and got to keep the fake set and get my money back. So India is part of this too.

Oh yes, India is one of the worst places for knock offs. I concentrated on China, but I could have gone down the same path using a search in India and even Japan (but Japan seems to have a better quality ) So much more is going to come out. This was just the beginning video to help people understand.

Thank you, exactly the information we need. I always figure anything you buy comes out of the same Chinese factory. I try and buy American, (especially candles), or European. Disappointed in last open stock Prismacolors bought at big box store said made in Mexico. Very tiny, so did not see it till I got home.

Just because it's made in China doesn't automatically mean it's bad. There are so many good sets to choose from, but many are duplicates. It's finding out which ones are duplicates so you can improve your color selections. Deli, Marco Renoir, shippen Farben are only a few of the really good ones. Some of the Manufacturers that create the cores in China are 20 years old or more.

@colormyworld the part where mentioning retail arbitrage seemed a bit harsh towards people who are re-sellers. Especially since we are in a pandemic and people are struggling to feed their families. Personally, I do re-selling on the side, and often sell art supplies, fashion or ect. that I have an eye for and I can get a good deal. I am not thieving from corporations. I have a masters degree and do a lot of research to procure products that people want at a good price. I don’t think that is bad-I think it’s smart and it’s called entrepreneurship. You stated that “companies are missing out on sales,” Do you believe in corporate welfare-at a time where many people literally can’t work while corporations that already made higher profits after the pandemic also got govt. bailouts. I don’t feel sorry for Blicks, target, Walmart or amazon whom paid zero in taxes and pay minimum wages to employees. I invite you to consider your empathy. Your empathy seems misplaced. Otherwise-I love your videos!!! Watch all the time your an amazing artist bravo on the editing!! Hugs from CA

I understand the struggles of the pandemic but arbitrage goes way back before the pandemic struck. Look at the sample I put in the video. The person clearly wanted to say to people they bought the pencils from a company that went out of business. I promise you the bag didn't get into the picture by accident. They were selling the pencils 3 times cheaper than anyone else on Ebay. I will also bet it's not their first go around with this. Prismacolor pencils are not manufactured in China. They may be distributed there along with many other manufacturers that have no problem putting the Prismacolor Tin on fake pencils. I put that example up also. Now look at the next 3 people in the search on Ebay. They are selling the pencils at market value. Who do you think will get the sale? Don't the people who actually purchased though the real distributors deserve a fighting chance? Don't they have to struggle though the pandemic too. I have no problem with resale. Almost ever person I know has sold on Ebay at one time or another. Arbitrage is a fact of life. It was not something I could leave out. It is one of the 4 ways people are selling these budget brands. People buying pencils have a right to know that when a price is too cheap there is a reason. The two reasons are arbitrage or counterfit pencils. If you look at the prices on Alibaba you will see exactly what Vendors pay for the pencils. The profit wiggle room is very slim and even if they want to shave a dollar or two off the price they have to buy a huge quantity to do it. This is an eye opening experience for everyone. BTW, I enjoy debate so don't think I am attacking your response.

Color My World No worries I’m glad you are up for the debate. :) I am not sure to what you are referring to. You covered a lot of ground in your video and it was very informative. I understand it’s a lot to explain in a short video but, in your response. I’m a bit confused-when you say “people who buy from the real distributors” who are you referring to? Also I never mentioned counterfeit products in my comment. I def agree that selling counterfeit products that are falsely claiming their a certain product when they are actually fake. That’s wrong.

I commend you for being so open in your other videos about your sponsorships and endorsements. I would imagine that if I was sponsored by art companies-I would also recommend to viewers to purchase products from suppliers or people who purchase directly from the supplier. All good though. My bf once worked on rodeo drive for a leading men’s watch retailer. There were 30 other small businesses in LA where you could purchase that very same authentic quality watch for 20-30% off. It was HIS JOB to tell people that those shops were inferior and to “Cast Doubt” on other avenues to purchase the watch-because he was “bought.”
@ColorMyWorld

@@colorecstasy6673 I am always open about which products are sponsored. In fact I have to be by law and by KZbin TOS, but way before I accept sponsorship I have tried and evaluated a product. I turn away more than I accept and I won't be accepting pencils from here on out (unless I know the product before and the company wants to throw a set at me for free, I am not proud) All the pencils except 2 were purchases. One is Arteza and the other MagicFly. I refused Arteza (Long ago) and MagicFly was a good pencil for a good price. Since then it has changed and that's going to be addressed soon enough. I never make promises to sponsors that guarantee a good review. I have always told them in advanced what I thought of their product and if I didn't like it I am honest and offer them the chance to back out. If I have purchased a set of pencils for review, good, bad or what ever I am free to do the review. In that case I don't have to report of KZbin any sort of sponsorship.

this is why there is a big difference in the black widow pencils the first 3 orginal sets are from the same manufacturer but the sink tones and the monarch are a lower quality pencil
@Msboochie2

I never knew this, thank you. I purchased one of the skin tone sets, because I needed skin tones, and I also wanted to try out the Black Widow brand people were raving about. I found them to be mediocre, they were pigmented enough but far too waxy for my taste. I was turned off from that and never bought any other sets, thinking they were all the same. I may have to reconsider.

I have to look closer to the sets. I have found 2 black wood barrel pencils on Alibaba. Thank you for pointing this out to me. I'll take a closer look, but you are probably right about the different manufacturers. So you are saying you like the older ones, I think the scorpion, widow and what ever the other one is. I have Monarch only. I like a few of the colors in it, but am not that impressed with the quality. I wouldn't use these pencils alone. I would mix them with another pencil. The two pencils I like are very unique and I don't have them in any other set. Thank you.
