it was their only option they tried to counter attack and it doesn't work against a team with a defensive wall. If England tried to go head to head, Italy would've scored 2 or 3, England doesn't have the power to hold Italy. It never did. Englad wasn't horrible, they were just not good enough from the start.

Think GS actually made the big mistakes before the tourney started: Rashford wasn't fit to be included in the team, or else he would have played more minutes. GS then had to play catch up with fewer options and fewer subs being used in games, which hurts late on in a tourney.

German here: Southgate is a bad coach - not just because he allowed Rashford and Sancho to shoot. He proved so many times that he isn't capable to manage a quad properly. You guys got the most exciting attacking talents in the world and play with SEVEN defenders at the back. A lot of England fans need to learn decency. You made it really easy for everyone else to hate you. Stop booing other countries national anthem! Stop bein racist to your own players! And stop hyping your on squad to ridiculous heights! And please, please, please... stop that "it's coming home" nonsense. Furthermore you need to reevaluate the quality of your CB's, CM's and Keeper. Especially Stones, Maguire and Pickford.
@Gooniessss
@Gooniessss 3 жыл бұрын
I get your point and some are valid. Booing the national anthems used to be the norm. Not just in England but throughout europe. Not that I advocate it and times have thankfully changed. Southgate has said most of the racist abuse came from abroad. Lets not pretend this abuse was just from England. I think it's a bit rich a German lecturing England on us being hated and our behaviour.

it's so annoying though because i think England could of caused them problems if they bought on the creative substitutions earlier when he could see that Italy were having more and more posession. When he did bring on the subs after Italy scored we started to play better and could of nearly scored ourselves a few times. I'm afraid Gareth's tactics caused our own problems. In anycase the game still ended up a draw after extra time and we lost on penalties so it was a close game.

@@johnuk6924 True, that's the approach that I would have taken, having said that, had he opted for a more attacking approach it could have turned into a repeat of the Belgium - Italy game, where the Belgians natural adventurous tendencies provided Italy (especially Chiesa, Insigne and Barella) with more space to exploit. By the time Southgate brought on those more attack-minded subs, Italy's best players; Verratti, Barella, Insigne, Chiesa were no longer on the pitch and Italy looked like their two previous forays into extra time was starting to catch up with them.

I think we need to take a moment and appreciate Italy's resilience during the game. They fought hard after conceding an early goal and went past an English defence which had conceded just once in the whole tournament. And even during the penalties they were the ones who were initially behind yet they were the ones to win it in the end. England must have sealed the game when they had the lead in the penalties.

Something which doesn’t seem to get spoken about is. England had “home advantage”, all through the tournament. They played most of their games at Wembley. Where as the other countries in the tournament had to travel much more often. No other county played more than 3 games at their home ground. England played their last 16 game at Wembley, the semi final and final. The final and semi final were home games. Pundits and fans talk about “the 12th man”, it was an unfair advantage. They weren’t hosting the tournament, so why did they get to play so many games at home. It’s a point which doesn’t seem to get brought up.

@Scott Lachance I don’t understand how England managed to get so many games with home advantage during the tournament. I’ve tried bringing this same point up with England fans only to be shot down. However if it was any other team, but England, it would have been brought up. Also as far as the penalty goes. What happened to VAR? The ref pointed to the spot as soon as the player went down. It wasn’t a penalty. Surely VAR should have been used, especially given the circumstances. As soon as it was noticed a laser was being used to shine in the keepers eyes. They should have also been made to take the penalty again or void the penalty. Again this would have been made an issue if it was the England goal keeper, that had a laser shone in his eye. Sorry to say but I don’t think England would stand much chance in another tournament. Due to how biased Euro 2020 was towards England winning it. Let’s face it it wouldn’t be the first time a tournament or match has been fixed in one way or another.

England are a one dimensional footballing side. They played great in the first half where they overran Italy but England in the second half couldn't touch the ball, Italy kept control and posession. Sterling spent more time on the floor and Kane looked lost. We rely heavily on these players but they went AWOL. Southgate was clueless and his substitutions were far too late not allowing the players to gel into the game, and as for the penalties let's not even go there.

England's forwards are as good as any but the defensive minded approach of Southgate was why England didn't win. The first half was excellent, but backing off and defending on your 18 yard box against a team with Chiesa in it as they did was stupid. The pressure they invited by defending deep was massive and was only going to produce an equaliser. The attacking talent in England's ranks under a coach like Pep Gaurdiola would be a joy to watch, and it would win things. Southgate isn't the solution, he's the problem.

Mancini got the absolute maximum out of a limited squad, they were positive, always played on the front foot and were brave, well done Italy they deserved to win.

Italian here. We have a decent team but far more weak than the last decades. (Check the names of the azzurri from the early 2000...goosebumps). They simply worked well together as a one team, with winning mentality since the beginning of the tournament. England seemed too much conservative and had fear to win...their legs were shaking. Too much pressure maybe. Also too much talent left on the bench. Give Mancini that bench and he will win a major tournament without much effort. Also for the penalty: you blame the kids, but maybe the senior just refused to take their responsability. Just my 2 cents sorry for the bad english

The thing about it with Southgate is that he went this far while mainly sticking to the gameplan he put in his place, starting from the first game when he put Trippier at left back all the way to the semis so it was hard for him to deviate from it even when the evidence on the pitch suggested that Italy had total control of the situation. I didn't want England to win in fairness, but Hendo should have come on at least ten minutes earlier. Once Chiesa started moving to the central corridors towards the end of the first half, Rice was a ticking time bomb waiting to happen and had no idea how to deal with him. England needed the tranquility and calmness on the ball and on the pitch in general and Hendo provides that. I also thought taking Trippier instead of Walker was the wrong decision. While Walker didn't put a foot wrong, Trippier is much better going forward, his crosses will be of danger to the Italians and can hit a freekick and England had a couple of those around the area but had no one to shoot them. Obviously a lot has been written about putting Sancho and Rashford two minutes on before the end of extra time or letting Saka, a kid, basically have the weight of the world on his shoulders for the 5th penalty so I won't go there. The other thing is that I don't agree that England is the best international side when it comes to talent. They have tons of great players, but they all play in the same position on the pitch, once you go further back, there is a lot of hard working players but nothing special to write about. Italy's midfield is much better and more talented at keeping the ball than England's midfield and that is even when Hendo was on and that defense is nothing special to write about. It is great when you have Mount, Grealish and Foden in your squad but in reality to keep the balance of your team, you'd have to start at most just two of them. Same thing with Sterling, Rashford, Sancho and Saka, you can't start all four of them unless you're playing FIFA. It is worth noting that in this tournament, more and more managers who have squads full of stars like France and Portugal struggled with fitting them to a system and played much worse football than England and crashed out earlier, so credit has to be given to Southgate for at least knowing his best system and not trying to fit players into it rather choosing those who understood what he was trying to achieve on the pitch.

With such a squad, my Euro squad rotation would be rooted in a 4-3-3 with a holding midfieder to protect the defense on counter attacking opportunities, full backs offering overlapping support: Sterling Kane Sancho (Rashford/Saka/Grealish/Calvert-Lewin are all interchangeable here depending on how you want to play). Mount Bellingham (Hendo/Phillips interchangeable here as well) Phillips/Rice Shaw/Maguire/Stones/Trippier (defensive depth is self explanatory) You can't fail to utilize attacking talents such as Sancho etc, if you have such players, AFTER they score, one can still revert to the defensive/counter tactics with subs/formation change if required, or even start that way against a better technical team(i.e. a team like Spain). I would have also cut one defender(CB, Coady/White/Mings take your pick) from the final squad and added another CM for depth and tactical flexibility. I'm not a coach/manager though so, just imo. Anyway, Forza Italia!! I could see them winning the Euros, but it was nervy at times lol.

England back on their heels and very few opportunities. As someone who knows little about football strategy, I could clearly see Italy as the offensive team, the aggressive team, the team that deserved the title. The only times they've played good teams, in form, in tournaments under him;Croatia and Italy, they've lost. The media build up of him was last week was way over the top. He has an array of wonderful talent at his disposal and is way below the required level to coach and set up teams for these tournaments. Well said! pathetic negative cowardly approach. We had so much in our favor and even an early goal. Play to your strengths? nope not with this manager. Chielleni the Italian senior defender said that England made him laugh, because Englands bench could've made the finals. So much talented offensive players, yet Southgate made them sit as deep as possible in our own box, trying see out a 2 min lead for 90 min. We had the easiest half of the draw. Apart from Germany, not really a top team as an obstacle, then we we had the Semi final and the Final on home ground in front of a sell out home crowd and the national all behind you. It was shocking negative cowardly approach. Just sit deep, with no out ball, then occasionally give the ball to Sterling or Kane, and cheer them on to run single handedly 70 yrd up the pitch. However it was more like. sit back, then when they you the ball, hoof the ball up the pitch back to Italy, and lose possession every 2 second. Only started to play more positively when we conceded and by extra time it was more even, but then again he looked to have settled for pens quite sometime before end of extra time. It's pathetic man. So at least the opposition's defenders are engaged and have something to worry about. We made them look like prime Barcelona. Just casually playing the ball around and England ball watching sitting deep. Spain were unlucky not to have beat Italy. they dominated the match similar to how Italy dominated against southgates negative tactics. Spain had 70% possession against Italy, yet England with all the offensive talent, AT HOME, had 35% possession against Italy. So what would it have been with these tactics against Spain? 20% possession for England, at home?

Also, maybe Gareth Southgate approached the game in a defensive manner. But still what happened during the penalties was not entirely his fault. Senior players like Henderson, Sterling, Grealish and Shaw must have stepped up at those crucial moments and Southgate can't force them at that time to take those game changing penalties. So instead of blaming Southgate and abusing the England team, appreciate that this team has come this far and wish them well in future tournaments.
