Where Did the Peace Sign Come From?

The Algiz (Elhaz) rune represents protection, today’s ‘Peace’ sign/symbol is the Algiz rune reversed and encircled. As a Norse Heathen, when Algiz reversed has the opposite meaning, it's vulnerability, but it's encircled, which when something is encircled can mean to protect. So for me the peace sign means protect the vulnerable.

Nice one - I was a proud member of CND throughout the Seventies and 80s, so I did know what the symbol represented. Probably the biggest event was the Peace March at the height of the Cold War in 1983, with approximately 250 - 400k people in Hyde Park London. We were protesting about US nuclear Cruise missiles being deployed at Greenham Common and against the overall escalation by NATO and the Western powers in Europe against the Soviet Union.

It comes from the Serbian-Slavic Vedic Rune sign for Peace-Peace Rune/Belobog Rune (Belobog-White God) sign (Y) and Serbian-Slavic Vedic Rune sign for CHERNOBOG (Black God/Lucifer) which is upside down (Y) letter. Thank you for clarifying. I have had 2 peace symbol sign patches for years. I've never sewed my own patches on. So, I figured I'd try my hand at it. I was so proud when I finished and it looked perfect.... until my husband came home and told me I had sewen it upside down. I thought the upside-down peace symbol meant anarchy. So, I thought I'd leave it that way, due to our president-elect, as I don't agree with any of his policies. However, I just found out that it's a symbol the Nazi's used on grave markers for "accomished soldiers " Hell No! Algiz/elhaz is written both ways was since at least the 400′s AD. There is no such thing as “merkstave,” that is something that was invented along with the modern practice of runic lot-casting divination which was invented by the Nazi Ernst Tristan Kurtzahn, probably some time in the 1920′s (I don’t believe he himself used “merkstave”). As many nouns end *-az, this bindrune might be the origin of the “upside-down” elhaz rune. Elhaz/algiz and ýr are not part of the same system, rather they are the same rune at different time periods.
