Should teaching sight words (high frequency words) be done as part of your phonics instruction? What do these two skills have to do with each other?
In this video, we dive into these questions and more! I also share how to match your high frequency word instruction to your phonics scope and sequence, and explain how to fit both high frequency words and phonics skills into your schedule.

Were you taught to teach high frequency words just by having kids look at a word on a card and “memorize” it? Let me know in the comments!

Hello, I just discovered your channel and really like your videos. Can you share your educational background as I am also interested in the reading and literacy field for K-2. Thank you!

Hi!! Thank you so much for your kind words! :) My background has been made up of a lot of different things - when I got my undergraduate degree in elementary education, I also had a reading endorsement. Later, I got my master's degree in literacy leadership, which also qualified me to apply for the state reading specialist certification. I got my ESL endorsement and have had some Orton Gillingham training, too. I hope this helps!

If I do everything you suggested and it doesn’t stick that week, (w a student w no reading diagnoses just needs more repetition in general) do I just keep reading decodables w the words for exposure and adding the words to dictation while moving forward w new words or do you suggest I stay on the same word(s) until mastery? If I cycled them we would be cycling multiple words not just one or two.

Such a great question! Definitely, reading decodables will help. I also think seeing words out of the context of a text through reading words separately and writing helps it all come together! I think you can "move on" while still spiraling in review from the past concept. Like you said, sometimes it's just needing a bit more time and repetiion. For instance, if students are struggling with short e words, you can still introduce short o words. Just keep carving out time for the short e words through review. Sometimes, comparing two patterns (i.e. a sort where they are sorting short e vs. short o words) could actually help solidify some things for them!

This is very helpful thank you. I’m a homeschooling mom and was wondering have you ever seen the curriculum The Good and The Beautiful? If yes, what are your thoughts on it? TIA.
