Yeah - guns, ammo, chokes; all can be aurgued until the rooster goes to roost - whatever you feel works best, is likely fine. I generally use IMP/Mod (20 ga.) for most of the season; turning to 3" rounds as the season progresses - multiple states, all wild birds. If I feel the need, I will bump up a gauge - from 20 to 12 - but use the same choke combo. As a dog trainer, I enjoy your little Britts a bunch. All together, "Well done!"

Enjoyed the video depicting just how it is with a typical day afield in the late season. Always like watching the dogs out there with you doing work & every day is a learning experience. That M/IM choke combo is right on for late season roosters. I bought a flat of #5's heavy field loads a year ago & they're good medicine for those tough wild roosters. I really like the down range energy produced by a #5 shot for anchoring those roosters dead where they fall. Nice work on the video all the way around.

I like an SK2 choke (aka light modified) in my 20 gauge autoloader. For wild pheasants I use #5 shot 3” magnums. For the second and third shots I use Prairie Storms or Federal 3rd degree turkey loads. The wads in those shells shoot much tighter than normal shells so it’s like having a second tighter choke. For state released pheasants I use #6 shot for the first one or two shots followed by #5 Prairie storm.

Mod on first barrel and full on second. It usually takes me a few seconds to get back on them after the first shot so I like the extra distance a full choke affords me. I also prefer #6 for mixed bag hunting. If a preserve hunt and I know it’s just quail or chukara then it’s 7-1/2.

Modified and full for me too out of my 20 gauge Redhead. A Trulock improved modified is on my santa wish list, along with a #1 skeet for quail. Late season, I like to shoot 3" 1-1/4 ounce #6 and #5 Fiocchi Golden Pheasant. But with the ammo shortages, it's whatever I can find!😢

I keep my left pocket of my game vest filled with number six shot in my right pocket filled with 7 1/2. I run the 71/2s through my first barrel with an improved cylinder choke and the Sixers through my second barrel with a full choke. Keep in mind I hunt over flushing dogs and even the close birds get up a lot further out than they do with a pointer. That set up seems to work pretty good for m

For late season when the birds flush before you can get a good setup on them I use my IM choke for up to 60yds which i have dropped at that range. Early season when the birds sit until your right on top I like to use my Full choke for a quick spread. I use 6, 5, and 4's. Just depends on the environment I'm in. I also always use 12 Guage on roosters. Haven't had much luck with 20 Guage or 16. Sun glasses are a must 😅. Great video as always. God bless.

@jesscobb22796 ай бұрын
@@kaol1512 yep I'm sure. I use an old Ithaca pump 12 Guage made in the early 1940's for early season. It only has a built in, non removable full choke.

Like you found, we would find them in the woods/timber areas and they'd run just like that rooster did. 12ga 2-3/4" #6 with IP & MOD, actually IP & IPM. B

I have been going with improved modified for first barrel and full on second with #4 lead or #3 steel. In October i had a downed my limit of roosters and they had still ran off before I tightened my pattern, super frustrating. Pheasants are tougher than grouse for sure. Roosters can take a couple pellets and still get away.
@UplanderLifestyle6 ай бұрын
Totally agree! You have to be on with your shots with a tighter choke, but when you're on you smack em' compared to open chokes where as you mentioned, may just be a bb or two. Thanks for sharing, and best of luck the rest of season!

If I am out by myself and think I have a chance at the birds holding, I use a 20 gauge, 6 shot, with IC, and mod. If I am hunting pressured birds and expect a lot of Iong wild flushes, I use an auto with 5s and modified. I generally always grab an auto if hunting with a group.
@UplanderLifestyle6 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing, I like your thoughts on hunting with and without people, I think it definitely makes a difference on how the birds are going to react and the shots you'll get. Thanks for following along!
@davidcudlip65876 ай бұрын
Early season over a pointing dog, I use improved/improved. Later season I use Mod./Mod. #6 in the first barrel of either a side by side or over under. And #5 shot in the second barrel. I usually hunt with a 16 gauge or sometimes a 20 gauge.
@UplanderLifestyle6 ай бұрын
I like that setup! Thanks for sharing 👍🏻

IC/Mod all season long. I went trap shooting the other day and got 23/25 and then realized I forgot to change the selector on the O/U and left it on IC the entire time. Amazing what happens when you let a shotgun be a shotgun. You can always use 1-3:8, 1-1/2 oz in the IC and 1-1/4 in Mod to leverage the chokes if you feel it’s necessary.
@UplanderLifestyle6 ай бұрын
The previous gun I shot was fixed IC/Mod. I did good with it and have no complaints on that choke tube set up. It’s probably the most versatile combo for a variety of hunting. Thanks for sharing and following along 👍🏻

Thing about missing, is that it breeds more missing. When I did high power competition, you had to treat that 5 the same as a 10X, if you thought about how that bad shot may have just cost you the match, it would. It’s a mental game. When I made a bad shot, I had to put it out of my mind and hope the leader screws up more than I did.
@UplanderLifestyle6 ай бұрын
Agreed, it’s not something you can think about to try and fix. Personally, my best shooting is done instinctively. All part of the challenge and fun of the game 👍🏻

Well I usually use mostly #6 But the other day I went dove hunting.. Shot bout 20 dove. Mostly ring kneck they have no limit. Used all my #6. I had #3 to shoot some duck off the canals.. shot 5. Then decided to hit my qauil spot on the way home.. but all I had was #3 lol I'm in Cali so it's steel. The #3 actually tore the birds up less than the #6 I typically use. Less pellets I'm guessing and tighter pattern longer distance with the larger steel pellets. Skeet reached out like a modified.. I was a little surprised. Shot 9 quail. And half of them still folded bounced and landed in there feet running with #3 lol got to be pnd for pnd the toughest birds. I'm not saying to hunt qauil with duck shot. But ammo is versatile

Good stuff man, and thanks for sharing! Totally agree on ammo versatility 👍🏻 just gotta match it with the right choke tube.

Deffinetly.. #3 with a modified probably would of bin a different story. This area is fairly open so I usually run a mod or improve mod with #6 on them. With steel anyways.
