I know that company! they are way overpriced but at least they will do it for you. Praxair and Air Gas are cheaper (last time they charged me $.99 a liter) but they want you to buy huge quantities and require background checks.

Confirmation bias does wonders here. Until you actually start looking, you won't ever notice it was there. Go out, and look. I've seen a few on my way home from work today, albeit I do live in a highly populated area. It might not be the same in rural areas, but I'm sure you can go to your local big city and find something close by.

+NightHawkInLight - Here in Denmark where we operate from, there is definitely also a legal asspect to this. You are not allowed to transport LN2 in the same cabin as the driver. LN2 expands around 700 times going from its boiling point to room temperature, so those 20 L could potentially expand to 14000 L or 14 cubic meters. That would definitly put you at risk, even in a minivan. However, you could just open a window and as long as you don't spill, there is almost no evaporation frow a good quality dewar, those will keep LN2 liquid for weeks, so you would be just fine.
@TheKingofRandom
@TheKingofRandom 8 жыл бұрын
+NightHawkInLight Not at all. Hardly any LN2 escapes the dewer, and there are plenty of natural air leaks in the van. The real concern would be if there was a crash and the dewar spilled over. But in that case the windows would most likely all be broken as well.

+Grant Thompson - "The King of Random" What car are you hoping to get and will you make a vid on it?
@RevFur
@RevFur 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Grant, not sure if it's been discussed yet but if you're going to store nitrogen in your dewar for any period of time you should use a foam plug that fits snugly enough to prevent outside air from entering the dewar. Reason being that oxygen in the air will liquefy on contact with liquid nitrogen. As the nitrogen in the dewar slowly evaporates, the oxygen stays liquid due to it's higher relative boiling point, and you'll eventually have a high concentration of liquid oxygen which can be dangerous if there are any organic subtances inside the dewar (oils, dirt, etc). Just a heads up, stay safe!

+Harry Ward oh I was looking at the breaking forces that had to be applied to acrylic at varying temperatures. I chose it because I just to do some air rifle shooting and we wore acrylic glasses for protection and something the pellets would bounce back and hit your glasses. I wanted to calculate the force a pellet would place on the acrylic if you were to be hit by one of these "bouncers" and whether at temperature in winter the glasses were likely to fracture more easily. tbh I didn't need liquid nitrogen but it was a bit of fun and helped obtain a better calibration curve. i basically used a vaccine chamber and dropped ball bearings onto strips of 3mm thick acrylic and shattered them, then calculated the force required. I then set about using a high speed camera to measure the speed that the pellets flew at and then estimating that a pellet bounces back at roughly 1/3 the speed it approaches the target at. I used this to calculate the force applied when hitting he glasses and therefore the pressure (since there are about 2mm in diameter) when hitting the glasses. I used the pressure and force from the pellet and the force and pressure from the vaccine tube experiment at different temperatures to determine the temperature required for the glasses to shatter on impact with a bouncer (it was about -100 degrees c so we didn't need to worry). I also determine what would happen if you shot a pair of glasses directly and I found that the pellet would go straight through at about -30. it was a good project but it was riddles with inaccuracies such as estimation of pellet speed, surface areas of ball bearings, the temperature of the acrylic in the chamber (I used an IR scanner but it was always changing even though it was in a vacuum), the fact that glasses are convex specifically to help strengthen them from collisions and a whole host of estimations and mathematical quirks. but yeah it was fun to do. I'm a biologist so my physics work isn't the best

I've just seen the video tour of your nitrogen liquifying set up and that's reminded me my job as an MRI-technician. Most of the super-conductive MRI-scanners have the same set up keeping the low level of liquid helium evaporation. Even the noise of the working helium compressor sounds pretty familiar:) The main difference is we had the compressor cooled down by 4-8 degrees Celsius glycol of the separate freon cooling system. What is the temperature of the cold head do you use? Smth around 60 degrees?

I am researching a possible way to store it (and for as long as i can before next refill) 2) In your personal experience is it toxic to use it in food processing for humans to consume ?

Maybe it's already been posted but regarding the ball socket on the tripod: did you try dipping it into the liquid nitrogen first? maybe the low temp would help the metal contract a bit so you could slide it back into the socket. If I remember correctly, some metal rings in Ferrari engines go through that process (very tight fit)

gamingSlasher Dewars are very good at preventing heat moving across their walls.. Again, they're like an industrial grade thermos. There's virtually zero heat getting in from the walls of the container, so the main infiltration of heat is from the small air gaps in the top, but remember that when you pour liquid nitrogen out, the "smoke" hugs the ground... because it's cold, and denser than the air, so the cold nitrogen gas produced as the liquid nitrogen evaporates fills the rest of the dewar, and insulates it from much air (and therefor heat) getting in. Also remember that this dewar is carrying a lot of liquid nitrogen. The more there is the more energy has to leak in to heat it up to evaporate it.
