So brilliant! Ricky, it is like you pull back the curtains and show the internals that make music work and reveal why the guitar is built the way it is. Thank you for providing such ancient wisdom is an accessible form!

im confused about flatting the 3rd in the minor key. how do you flat a C or an F when they dont have flats? I realize you are at a point where there is a half step between the 2nd and 3rd chord but arent C and F already a half step from B and E? Thanks

You're mixing note names and intervals. The tricky thing to get your head around is superimposing layers of information. Sometimes, it's easy to think they mean the same thing because they're manifesting the same thing. If you had C as the b3 the underlying minor key would be A minor. The alphabet letter has no tonality fixed to it. None of the alphabet letters are repeated. So A minor is: A B C D E F G A R 2 b3 4 5 b6 b7 R Another example in D minor: D E F# G A B C# D R 2 b3 4 5 b6 b7 R Notice the intervals (numbers) don't change. The note names (alphabet) change to fit the scale formula/structure, (which is fixed).

The flat 3, flat 6 and flat 7 in the minor key was also a bit confusing at first. Until I put the Am key next to A Major Key. Then it was actually clear to see why they are noted as flats. If you have the Major Key and you flatten the 3rd, 6th and 7th you will get the minor key with the same Root Note. Eureka!!! Am Bdim C Dm Em F G b3. b6. b7 A. Bm. C#m D. E. F#m G#dim I think you should’ve put this onto paper lol. I am enjoying these theory videos, thank you!

Great lesson but I’m missing something. If you flatten the third as in both examples you get Am, B dim, C flat. But C flat is B. And, same with the Dm example: Dm, E dim, F flat…again F flat equals E? Thanks Ricky. Love your lessons.

Eyup Don! The structure of the "bulldogs teeth" follows the minor scale formula (w h w w h w w) R 2 b3 4 5 b6 b7 A B C D E F G D E F G A Bb C I think you might be flattening an extra interval. If you're in my Facebook group I can answer better with an image.

Hey, thanks for the lesson. I have a question about using this with '7th' chords. If I play a chord progression like 1 6 2 5 in Em, should I make that 5th chord a dominate chord?
