Where does your Steak come from??? New Zealand Beef.

We get a 700 kg steer processed by Canterbury Homekill for some summer BBQ Beef and we are marking the Angus Beef calves.
My Name is Alistair Bird and My wife Genna and I farm on 'The Grange" near Oxford, North Canterbury, in the South Island of New Zealand.

Wow those guys don't mess about. Clearly Pros at what they do. This video was really good for me to watch. Such a stark reminder to stay connected to our food...to consider both how its lived and died when picking up a cling wrapped peice of meat in the shops! So easy to be disconnected. Thank you for showing us non farmers behind the scenes...if there is such thing as a 'good death' low stress in a home paddock is surely it. Ill look forward to summer bbq invites ;)

that connectivity membrane that is between meat & skin can it be used for anything like sausage casing? Meat wrapped for hangi etc, it seems a lot of resource lost…

Hi, we sell all of the calves (except our replacement heifers) at weaning to Anzco. Subs are ticking along well.

The way it was intended to be done, almost 0 stress. Wish we had the same service available to us in Ontario Canada. Are you able to sell the beef from this service or is it only for home use?

Hi Scott, thanks for watching. Its only for home use. It need to be killed and inspected in a registered facility for it to be sold to the public.

I have just watched your summary of the etf scheme and how it affects farmers. Well done you were pretty clear. I am not a farmer never worked on a farm. My view is that you were focusing on the problem not coming up with solutions. It’s your problem if your product is going to become unacceptable overseas or indeed locally. That’s business. You have to change to survive. Look at nz history of companies who did not adapt. What ever product you come up with has to be acceptable to the market. You can’t rely on governments to sort that out for you. Governments change. Think of the car industry. 70 years ago we were buying mostly from GB. Now I don’t think any cars are made there. They didn’t adapt. Farmers are great food producers maybe not marketers. Difficult times.

There are a couple of ways of looking at it. One is that we should adapt and change, The other being we are already one of if not the most efficient producer of milk and meat in the world, Why do we have to sacrifice our business and communities to satisfy a government who is just point scoring on the global stage.

Different welfare standards in UK. Rubber rings can only be used in 1st week of life. Anaesthetic has to be used by vet for calves over 2 months of age.

@@kiwifarmernz You “fear” having higher welfare standards? It is no wonder UK farmers are complaining about unfair competition from farmers in other countries and UK politicians aren’t listening. Maybe UK consumers should take note!

$175 to kill the animal and then $1.50 per kg to process the meat depending on what you want. That steer was 420 kg so it add up.
