today we head up to Grampians Angus Stud to look at some rising 2 year bulls. We manage to purchase one but it was a bit over budget.

Great video. Jono is a great bloke and terrific breeder. You probably should have parameters on all traits, especially when you retain replacements. Every steer has a sister! The other thing In my opinion is that you remember the bull and his influence in your herd, long after you forget the price. An extra 5k over 3 years for the one you want is not a lot more.

Congrats on your purchase mate. I don't know much about Bulls but in my amateur opinion lol he's a good looking boy and looks like abit of a ladies man. Hopefully he's the mustard and gets all your girls' up the duff lol and produces some good-looking sons and daughters. Go the Blues!!! 😆

When I worked full time my favorite meat was Taupo Angus, once you eat this meat it's amazing quality but once my forced retirement i couldn't afford but was extremely ill,

A good bull with good genetics is a must to put over your breeding herd , Granmpian bulls look to have that and good length too...think you did well getting one for $10500 should serve you well over the next few years , while getting your money back... Good bull's here in Australia are bringing double over the last two years ... a sellers market , take care...

This is pretty much how every sale I’ve ever been to goes.....You pick what you like and end up buying something more suitable to your budget. You still got a great bull from a top breeder.👍 Did you hear about all those cattle dying in Kansas. Do you think that could be heat stress or something else? Seems crazy.

Angus bulls are higher there than they are in the US...not at the high end but at the lower end... and nobody wants the lower end so you have to pay. The bad part about bulls is they're expensive and very often they hurt themselves...but that's the nature of the game. thanks for the videos, interesting to see New Zealand as a comparison to the states.

Is it normal to have a on farm sale of bulls like that .how many did they sell and how old a herd is it ,ie have they got a good reputation? Sounds like other farmers got a good feeling about the future of beef even though your government an’t giving good vibes .Good luck with the bull and it’s the livestock that pays the bills Thanks for the time

Yep it very common over here. Most cattle studs will have an o farm auction like this one. They sold 45 out of 45. Average price of 11K. This was their 11th sale, they have a really good reputation.

everything seems to more expensive than we think/budget for at the moment - when you look at it on how many calf's you get over the three years then it will all work out really because it has to

Why don't you breed your own? My father did when he had breeding cows and sold them to friends and relations too. He did the same with his rams. When I left school and worked on a sheep station the managers used to go off to the bull sales, got the special treatment, the flattery, the free alcohol and came home with expensive bulls, my father used to LHAO. He always said feeding beats genetics and we have a had long time to get our genetics right. The only stud that interests me is in Colorado, where the university tried to isolate the dominate Angus traits for toughness etc and created the LIm-flex bull to cross with the dairy industry. When I leased my first farm, I purchased some Romney rams from a local breeder, left overs from the ram sales, they were cheap and we needed dog tucker. Well I lost a couple of steers and didn't need them for a few months, spread them out amongst the cattle. They got so big I couldn't handle them in the killing shed, ended up selling them to farming mates for breeding, great rams great genetics just needed a little longer.

I agree that feeding is more important than genetics, but if you breed you own there is no genetic improvement whatsoever. Therefore you are essentially linebreeding your cattle herd and that becomes dangerous after some time.

I still can't believe that your eyebrow raising at 10:40 was making bids on a bull- no scratching your nose at this sale, might accidentally buy a bull!

Once the bid spotter knows your style its easy, discreet and effective so then scratching your nose means you have an itchy nose.

I found it difficult to understand their shouting but can clearly understand that bulls got nervous due to the new environment, crowd, and more over bulls got frightened when men are shouting at the auction.

That's a lot of money to recover on the bull , as you only get weight at the butcher
