Jennifer Holliday was only 21 years old when she starred in Dreamgirls. She won a Grammy & Tony award for her performance of this song. When Jennifer came to Los Angeles to star in Dreamgirls, I was an usher at the Schubert theatre. I got hear Jennifer sing every night for nearly a year. It was one of the best years of my life. The contemporary singers don't sing like this anymore. Such ashame.

OK guys, here's the story: The Broadway musical "Dreamgirls" was about the Motown group The Supremes. There were originally 4 girls in the group, and the one with the strongest voice was on the heavier side. She was forced out of the group because she didn't have the "Right Look," and Diana Ross became the group's lead singer. In the musical Jennifer Holliday's character is the heavier girl. She has been in a relationship with the group's manager but then she gets cut from the group and he drops her as well, which leads her to this showstopping number, "And I am telling you I'm not going." this made Jennifer Holliday a big star. Ironically, when the film of "Dreamgirls" was made she was passed over for this part, she was considered too old, and Jennifer Hudson played Effie and won an Academy Award for it. Jennifer Holliday lost a lot of weight and so did Jennifer Hudson after playing this part, respectively. Beyonce played the Diana Ross role in the movie, so you were right, Jay! If you want to hear THE BEST female singer of the 20th Century, it's time for you to do a deep dive into ELLA FITZGERALD!!!! Start with her live performance of "Summertime" or "Mack the Knife" in Berlin, or her recording of Summertime or ANY of her recordings with Louie Armstrong. THE BEST EVER!!!!!
@jackiecarson859
@jackiecarson859 18 күн бұрын
They did *start* as a 4 member group. Betty McGlown left the group to get married. *Florence Ballard* was forced out of the Supremes when there were only 3 of them - Mary, Flo and Diana. Flo was sexually assaulted as a teen which led to psychological problems, developed a drinking problem and sometimes she would show up to gigs intoxicated, gained weight...and Diana (who's name is actually 'Diane') was having a not so quiet affair with Berry Gordy (damn near all of us in Detroit knew about it), & wanted her out. And, yeah - *Ella Fitzgerald* is the best by far!! They need to deep dive into her body of work. *Thanks for all the info you've supplied!*

I’m 63 and had the privilege of seeing Jennifer Holliday on Broadway…twice. This song ends the the first half of the show. When she hit her final note, the silence was profound. People were in shock and awe. Then the applause and standing ovation began and continued for ten minutes. The roar from the crowd actually shook the mezzanine. I have never been so overwhelmed and moved by a live performance. It was beyond incredible‼️

Jennifer Hudson won an Oscar, a SAG, a Critic's Choice and a few other awards for Best Supporting Actress as a result. Jennifer Holliday won a Grammy for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for this song and a Tony Award for Best Leading Actress in a Musical. The only thing I can think of that is recent for you to check out is her time as Miss Teddy on The Masked Singer.

They weren't born when the original DreamGirls came out on Broadway. Their parents were probably teenagers back then as well. Unless you're from the hood so to speak, it's very easy to not know who Jennifer Holiday is.
@LMmccallL57

@@bonepicker1 I wasn't born during the time of a lot of Broadway hits, but I know about them and several of the popular songs and dance moves from them. "Sweet Charity" has some of my favorite dance scenes. "Hair" has music that I easily recognize. I'm black, didn't grow up in "the hood", but the majority of our neighborhood was of black people, with other races and ethnicities of lower middle class, and middle class income. My family members showed interest in many things in the art world, and passed it down to us. I was brought up on classical music, along with soul, pop, jazz, R&B, Disco, Rock, and more. Yes, we're all raised differently, but we're able to branch out and see things for ourselves as we get older. I was in middle school when "Dreamgirls" hit Broadway, and both black and white girls and teachers would sing it in school. All of my schools were mostly white students, but it wasn't uncommon for us all to explore different genres of music and other art. There are people who did grow up in "the hood" who followed Broadway and ended up on its biggest stage. 🙂

@@bonepicker1 Dude they weren't born when MOST of the songs and movies they react to came out, lol. But I know people have been requesting Jennifer Holliday for months and months. Their parents are probably the same age as I am or really close and I know Jennifer Holliday. The difference is that my parents introduced me and my siblings to many genres of music, with my older siblings discovering even more genres through their friends which of course trickled down to me. Since they launched this channel, I've discovered MAYBE 2% of new music but I've be re-introduced to so much more that I'd forgotten I knew. MTV launched when I was 11 so that was a daily stream of new music/genre/artists... the good old days.

Yes this is certainly Ms Holliday's song... but you are right. Jennifer Hudson isn't terribly far behind. Her duets with Tom Jones as judges on "The Voice UK" are so fun. Fab voices working together. Then do Tom with John Farnham singing ACDC's "Long Way to the Top". Then John Farnham with Jimmy Barnes "When Something is Wrong With My Baby"... and down the rabbit hole you go!

Jennifer Holiday won a Tony award for this role and this was a performance from the Tony's that year I believe. Not only did she kill this performance.... she did the whole show including this show-stopping number 8 times a week on Broadway. And she delivered this calibur of a performance each and every show. No one was going to win that year but her - and this is still one of the most-deserved wins in Broadway history.

My wife saw her do this on Broadway, and the show literally stopped after the number because the audience would not stop its thunderous applause. Jennifer Holliday is proof that real (and by real I mean raw vocals, no effects) singers are athletes. They know that singing to the best of their ability is a full body experience, and they know how to use their whole body to bring it.

Dream Girls was my very first Broadway show. During this song I’ll never forget the audience up in the balcony leaning over the rail, waving handkerchiefs yelling and cheering. Jennifer Holliday brought the house D O W N! ❤

Can you imagine singing that song every show every day and twice on Saturday. It's unimaginable. Jay, Broadway has all types of musical genres across all types of shows. You would love them.

Thanks for this comment. I was going to say something similar. Broadway isn't one genre of music, it's a form of presentation - a story presented with songs on stage. You can enjoy musicals and not enjoy every musical style, just like you can love movies and not love all movie genres. Loved this reaction! As an introduction to Broadway, it doesn't really get much better than this performance!

HAMILTON seems to be a must watch for them now that Jay has said he’s never seen anything from Broadway. There was a version released on Disney + I know some reactors have filmed. It might take some creative editing since I don’t think full songs can be played, but there’s zero chance IMO they don’t come away with it with a new appreciation for plays and musicals.

My husband and I have seen a number of really wonderful musicals over the years, but Jennifer Holliday's performance was next level. I don't know if I can even describe the way that particular song hit. The whole audience was spellbound. It was such an emotional punch in the gut that by the end of it I personally felt like I couldn't catch my breath. I was completely drained, trembling, tears streaming down my face, while the audience went wild. It felt like the theatre was vibrating. I've never seen anything like it before or since.

No one could ever, ever touch Jennifer Holliday! But we must give Jennifer Hudson her props. She did an amazing job covering this song in her version of it in the revisiting of Dreamgirls in the movie. And frankly, I don't think anybody else could have stepped up to cover that song like Hudson did. It takes a rare breed to sing like this. :)

At 21, she did not have that type of personal expereicnce. Michael Bennett the director worked with Jennifer extensively, on how to bring the character Effie's role to life. Michael's 1st suggestion was watching Barbra Streisand musical films. The creators of Dreamgirls also encouraged her, to bring all of her gospel and soul singing to the role as well. At 1 point Jennifer left the show during the tryouts. Michael Bennett couldn't find anyone like Jennifer, so he swallowed his pride and wooed her back by increasing her role. Originally her charcter was killed off after act 1.

Okay. There isn't enough said about this Dream Girl. When I first heard this voice so many years ago even before Whitney Houston, before, Shania, before so many R&B and theatrical voices, I was memorized. I was catatonic. I was overwhelmed. Jennifer was something that took me to another place like so many women have throughout the ages. She was transformative for me. I love all of the GOATS in women's vocals. This was her own. This was new. This was shere vocal power. I cried when I heard her. I weeped in the depths of my soul. Canadian Grandma Lori. C.

Jennifer Holliday is an amazing singer who sort of got typecasted as a Broadway star. She wanted a recording career but was unfairly trapped by that focus on looks mentality that record companies had back in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Record company executives didnt think Jennifer had the looks or sex appeal to be a superstar in music back then. It was totally wrong and evil of them to treat her that way. Jennifer Holliday's version of this song still makes me cry 40+ years later. Everytime I hear her, the tears flow...

The staging for this song was absolute genius. The audience goes wild at the end of the number, and as Effie is pushed into the background, Deena Jones and the Dreams come out singing (with a reworked version of the song) while the audience is still applauding, effectively 'stealing' Effie's ovation. Amazing, amazing stagework.

Another artist who sings this song to perfection - Amber Riley, from the the TV show Glee. Her live performance at the Olivier Awards in London (where she won for the best stage performance for her role at the West End), is superb. It's on her channel and had 1.2 million views so far. Deserves way more.

Jenifer Judson did a really good job in Dreamgirls the movie. 16 year old Sarah ilumu did such a good job with it in her Britain’s got talent audition they broadcasted the whole audition, which is uncommon!
