I’m 63 and had the privilege of seeing Jennifer Holliday on Broadway…twice. This song ends the the first half of the show. When she hit her final note, the silence was profound. People were in shock and awe. Then the applause and standing ovation began and continued for ten minutes. The roar from the crowd actually shook the mezzanine. I have never been so overwhelmed and moved by a live performance. It was beyond incredible‼️

Jennifer Holliday was only 21 years old when she starred in Dreamgirls. She won a Grammy & Tony award for her performance of this song. When Jennifer came to Los Angeles to star in Dreamgirls, I was an usher at the Schubert theatre. I got hear Jennifer sing every night for nearly a year. It was one of the best years of my life. The contemporary singers don't sing like this anymore. Such ashame.

I know the word “underrated” has been used a lot to describe artists whose talent and career don’t seem to add up. There are quite a few who fit this category. In the case of Jennifer Holiday, the term “underrated” is, itself, an understatement. She had a fairly successful string of modest hits in the 80’s and 90’s and some club hits in the 00’s. I won’t discuss how the music industry’s prejudices affected her career but she did have some health issues. Gastric bypass surgery has helped her but she has been dealing with Multiple Sclerosis as well. Her live performances are stuff of legend. You could watch five different live performances of And I Am Telling You and each would give you chills. Songs: I Am Changing, I Am Love, Just For a While, No Frills Love, I’m On Your Side, A Dream with Your Name On It”. Just a little trivia… In the Foreigner hit “I Want To Know What Love Is”, Jennifer is the distinct choir voice in the song’s outro.

OK guys, here's the story: The Broadway musical "Dreamgirls" was about the Motown group The Supremes. There were originally 4 girls in the group, and the one with the strongest voice was on the heavier side. She was forced out of the group because she didn't have the "Right Look," and Diana Ross became the group's lead singer. In the musical Jennifer Holliday's character is the heavier girl. She has been in a relationship with the group's manager but then she gets cut from the group and he drops her as well, which leads her to this showstopping number, "And I am telling you I'm not going." this made Jennifer Holliday a big star. Ironically, when the film of "Dreamgirls" was made she was passed over for this part, she was considered too old, and Jennifer Hudson played Effie and won an Academy Award for it. Jennifer Holliday lost a lot of weight and so did Jennifer Hudson after playing this part, respectively. Beyonce played the Diana Ross role in the movie, so you were right, Jay! If you want to hear THE BEST female singer of the 20th Century, it's time for you to do a deep dive into ELLA FITZGERALD!!!! Start with her live performance of "Summertime" or "Mack the Knife" in Berlin, or her recording of Summertime or ANY of her recordings with Louie Armstrong. THE BEST EVER!!!!!
@jackiec8594 ай бұрын
They did *start* as a 4 member group. Betty McGlown left the group to get married. *Florence Ballard* was forced out of the Supremes when there were only 3 of them - Mary, Flo and Diana. Flo was sexually assaulted as a teen which led to psychological problems, developed a drinking problem and sometimes she would show up to gigs intoxicated, gained weight...and Diana (who's name is actually 'Diane') was having a not so quiet affair with Berry Gordy (damn near all of us in Detroit knew about it), & wanted her out. And, yeah - *Ella Fitzgerald* is the best by far!! They need to deep dive into her body of work. *Thanks for all the info you've supplied!*

@@bonepicker1 I wasn't born during the time of a lot of Broadway hits, but I know about them and several of the popular songs and dance moves from them. "Sweet Charity" has some of my favorite dance scenes. "Hair" has music that I easily recognize. I'm black, didn't grow up in "the hood", but the majority of our neighborhood was of black people, with other races and ethnicities of lower middle class, and middle class income. My family members showed interest in many things in the art world, and passed it down to us. I was brought up on classical music, along with soul, pop, jazz, R&B, Disco, Rock, and more. Yes, we're all raised differently, but we're able to branch out and see things for ourselves as we get older. I was in middle school when "Dreamgirls" hit Broadway, and both black and white girls and teachers would sing it in school. All of my schools were mostly white students, but it wasn't uncommon for us all to explore different genres of music and other art. There are people who did grow up in "the hood" who followed Broadway and ended up on its biggest stage. 🙂

A once in a lifetime combination of song and singer that makes this HER performance for all time. Jennifer Hudson is an equally amazing singer but this song will always be bound to La Holliday. Since you enjoyed the power, range and commitment to the performance I think this is a valid place to suggest an artist I don't think you have covered - Jessie J and specifically in the show "The Singer". The Singer was a 13 week Chinese singing competition for already accomplished singers and in 2018 Jessie J was the first non-Asian competitor to be invited - and she won in a year full of excellent performances from excellent competitors such as Hua Chenyu, K.Z. Tandingen, Tengri and others. Jessie J displayed a new maturity and evolution in her already excellent singing and is right up your street. I would suggest her versions of Purple Rain or Killing Me Softly as a starting point but just her performances and those of the others in 2018 alone could give you a year of reactions. The production and musicianship of the backing band and vocalists is first class. This is also the competition that introduced the world to Dimash in the previous year.

The staging for this song was absolute genius. The audience goes wild at the end of the number, and as Effie is pushed into the background, Deena Jones and the Dreams come out singing (with a reworked version of the song) while the audience is still applauding, effectively 'stealing' Effie's ovation. Amazing, amazing stagework.

I watched this performance live on television when I was 19 years old and it started my love of Broadway musicals. Nothing better has ever been sung!

This is good that you two have finally gotten to Jennifer Holliday, and this most iconic song/performance. Needless to say your ears have now been thoroughly blessed. 😃

This performance never fails to bring me to tears. The night this show opened, when this song was performed was a historic night on the Broadway stage. I have been fortunate enough to have seen Ms. Holliday perform in Dreamgirls on the national tour. The company didn't feature Jennifer in the cast but on the night we saw it, they announced that the part of Effie would be played by Jennifer Holliday. The audience erupted! I also saw her in a small concert event.
