They were there only to bring home the crew, which took long time, which again is normal for Philippines, red tape is the speciality of the Philippine bureaucracy. After that the ships moved to Singapore, where they are safe from corrupt filipino politicians. We will never know how much money were paid in fictions fees to get the crew off the ships, the problems were invented by politicians/bureaucrats. Filipinos were allowed to come home but suddenly it was more important to invent new ways of legalized corruption.

@neilbarnett30464 жыл бұрын
Many of the storms follow the Gulf Stream, driven by its comparative warmth, so they will end up in Cornwall & Devon, making that part of the UK pretty stormy at times. Ok, it's not New Orleans and the Caribbean and Gulf hurricanes, but there are still flash floods and high winds, which can be a surprise to some people who expect our normal mild, benign weather. These warm winds from the sea carry plenty of water, so when they are forced upwards by steep cliffs and the lie of the land, this falls as torrential rain. Boscastle in 1957, 1963, 1996, 2004 are a case in point. Also 1952, Lynmouth, 34 dead.

Would be interesting to hear about how the cruise industry has dealt with the costs of these lay-ups. In aviation, the industry is based on a continuous operation model, a lot of costs derive from scheduled checks, minimum crew hours, and regular training, which are legally required to keep the certifications of the aircraft and crew. The assumption was that there will always be business to pay for those safety requirements; without business, passenger airlines mostly pay for these with cash.

Before that, we brought most of our Indonesian and Filipino crew back home with the ship. Have to say that in Jakarta the immigration process for the crew members was very quick (one day waiting and one morning of transfers) while the process in Manilla took over a month for the same amount of people. Very intersting times. Especially to see the ship going from full capacity with passengers and crew, to crew only and eventually to only 100 crew onboard when our bridge team was replaced by a new team.

I’ve been on My Vessel Tracker a lot lately and I must admit there has been a lot of cruise ships across the south coast.

A lot of them park near harbours, not in them, near them. We live near the beach and it's often to see random ships parking in the middle of the ocean about a 1km or 2 from the harbour for days, sometimes weeks on end.

When we were in the port of Scheveningen, near the Hague, Netherlands, with our small yacht, we went to the supermarket next to the quay and we saw a group of Filippino-looking guys with "Nieuw-Staatendam" jackets on who came to shore with their big lifeboat to do some shopping. Also, commercial sailing might be at an all time low, but there were more small yachts than ever, because almost no one went abroad or wanted to stay at a busy camping place

i was going to cruise with Allure of the Seas and tracked it when we got cancelled just to see what actually happened, and it seemed to visit the usual ports in the Mediterranean but for longer at a time. and then it visited Southampton in England and it was in the water between Ireland and England for a while. and then I panned over to America's and saw that Florida and Bahamas was full of ships and I was so surprised I wrote this just before you mentioned Southampton and Allure of the Seas :P

There's a lot anchored at the South of the UK at Weymouth. I know this because as a group we went out there and my mate had his DGI mavic air 2 camera drone (expensive drone). And we dared him to fly out to the ship. It was all good until he tried to return, without having an indicator of the headwind speed he was flying into, the battery rapidly started depleting as the little drone span its props at full speed to fight through the wind. The drone ended up as a submarine. DGI's insurance policy states that the drone will be fully replaced, if you are able to return your damaged drone (or what's left of it). Safe to say, he didn't get his insurance on it.

Ahh I’ve seen those cruise ships anchored just of the cost of Bournemouth earlier this week. When I first saw them I thought they were heading for Poole Harbour then realised they weren’t moving and correctly guessed they were just there for storage.

Casual: Where did all the cruise ships go? Coronavirus: Good question

Id love to work maintenance on one of those ships while they’re moored. The idea of that few people on such a large boat sounds heavenly
