Even though the industry has all this money, they still tried to convince the US Congress to help them out. Congress informed the Industry that they would be happy to help any US ships . None of the Ship are based in the US. If they were , they have to obey US labor laws . And no Cruise Company could afford to stay in business . So the US Government told them to talk to the governments of the Home Ports of the ships .

I was on board at that time, but missed the free cruise because my ship happened to be at my home country already. Bummer hahaha. My friends who stayed, however, seemed to have had a good time. The living conditions during that time were even better than normal. With no passengers on board, they had little to no work and were free to use some of the ship's services - in my ship, everyone had an individual, fully equipped passenger suite (with balcony!) for that period. Also, spending long stretches of time on board is normal, so those 2 months of travel weren't nearly as stressful as they may have sounded. For job security, during that travel they were all on payroll, on top of that, we weren't really laid off and as soon as this passes we will be hired back, as the industry recovers. From the comments here, I see that people have a really bad image of work and living conditions on board, but they are not bad at all. I definitely wish I had been forced to extend my stay for a two months trip like that.

Jonas, Do you recollect the time frame of getting staff to their home countries? At the time there was little/no air lift available anywhere let alone for thousands of staff. You are right that its bad being laid off but how many friends in all our cities were too? The good thing is the cruise lines will be ramping up in phases and these people will have jobs to go back to. The sad part was the quick pic of the closed Ketchikan stores, Nobody is talking about the job losses/economic losses in port cities at least in the US.....

Some cruise lines didn't collect up all their ships in one floating offshore zone. Some sent them to ports - including some ports *way* off the beaten track. I am fortunate enough to live near Eastport, Maine, USA where the Oceania Riviera was docked for many months, and went to go see the ship. The cruise ship is large enough to take the whole town's population on board, with room left over, so it was rather impressive to see it at the waterfront, towering over even the church steeples. And while there, the ship was paying 1/10th the docking fees of a major city, and mostly paid the debt on the recent expansion of the dock to be able to handle ships that large, so the town was pretty happy to host the ship.

I was one of the stranded crew! The company was great with us generally, but a lot of the independent contractors got screwed (art auctioneers, etc) by their own companies. One of my mates was effectively told this, and kinda had to be adopted by the cruiseline for repatriation at no cost.

The amount of stranded workers would be roughly on par with the size of many of the national militaries in the Caribbean. As badly as cruise lines generally treat their workers, I think those ships were taking people home one way or another :P

I live in the Portland, Oregon area. There is a coastal town called Astoria about an hour away that has just gotten the facilities for cruise ships, nothing huge. However, there were 10 cruise ships anchored because of the shut down. It was a big deal because no one from around here had ever seen that many large vessels in one place before.

I worked on a cruise ship as an American citizen during the shutdown. I was stuck onboard for a month off the coast of Florida, we could port in Florida but no one was allowed off for any reason (unless immediate medical attention was needed and then they couldn’t get back on). We knew we wouldn’t be sailing with guests anytime soon but the CDC wouldn’t allow us off to get personal supplies from the store. I couldn’t even get off to go to my car in the parking lot to drive twenty minutes down the road to my home.

Great video. One thing that I wished you covered was that it was not "smooth sailing" for every cruise company. There was half a dozen smaller cruise companies that folded in 2020, the largest was CMV-Cruise and Maritime Voyages. In July 2020, the parent company SQTL (South Quay Travel & Leisure Ltd) went into administration / bankruptcy; leaving the fate of employees, their five ships (plus one they were in the process of purchasing) and the passenger's fares in the great unknown.

I have been looking for a comment like yours for so long. Cruise ships are made of materials that cause damage to your body and one cruise ship map I looked at and a lot of the boat is underwater and it kills big sea animals and no one notices. Cruise ships also damage the enviorment when scrapped and the cruise industry was recently caught DUMPING PLASTIC RIGHT INTO THE OCEAN so I told my parents that cruise ships are evil and they seem to agree.

There's also the fact they switch to the most polluting fuel ever a few miles from port so the pollution levels on the top deck are beyond what you find in major cities. Also, there's been so many cases where serious crimes have been committed against other passengers, yet the culprit has been allowed to simply walk off the ship by the crew. All they care about is money.

Well. Good explanation. However in the case of Hurtigruten's Roald Amundsen. I live in Norway and in the news here the uncovered that the crew as you stated comes from lower waged county and they didn't quarantine property. Some testet before traveling to Norway. The didn't test when arrivals and actually had there quarantine onboard the ship while working among passengers. The management of Hurtigruten tried to cover the whole thing up.

Fascinating - having worked in large organizations my entire life, I knew that simply stopping the servicing & sending home a "customer base" was only the tip of the iceberg when cruise companies had to shutter this time two years ago. I especially marveled at the solution Carnival used to shuttle their fleet's personnel home from the Caribbean - remarkable; I would love to know what the life of crew members was like during those sailings (especially Filipino employees whose "shuttle" took the longest)?
