I catch a ton of mackerel in the U.S. by trolling at about 4 knots using planers and chrome spoons. It's the same all over the world. They are a pelagic species, so they chase their prey. You're doing a great job, guys!

Take some binoculars and watch the birds - they spot fish pretty well. That's what we used to do in the Caribbean (No fish finders where I was!)

Boat people are great. I can remember as a boy my brother and I catching dock lines for boaters coming in. We never hesitated to help and we never hung around to be thanked. We didn't need it or expect it as we knew the next time dad was docking someone would be there to grab our lines. Good luck on the tourney coming up.

Gemma, you make me crazy, the way you fish! Did someone teach you to keep bobing your rod constantly like that. Try leaving it steady for a bit then pull up on it once and let it sit again. The fish are probably having a tough time keeping up with your bait. Ed C

You will have to have a word with Troj (Troj's fishing). he is in Guernsey and getting loads of huge Mackerel. Also I don't think the non Mackerel were whiting, from what I could see they looked like small Pollock, of course I was not with you, so could be wrong, usually am.

The Mackerel could be running late this year, depends on sea temperatures etc. They are also a mid water fish, we used to watch out for them on the fish finder. Shoals would show up mid-water and BANG, you could catch 6 at a time.

Great video. When docking the line person can hold BOTH lines (or just a spring line) and get the boat stopped and connected. I thought your docking was well done, but you can bring the stern and bow line to the dock at the same time. Again, great fun and very good vid.
@simonarichmond36265 ай бұрын
I find one can control the boat by putting a spring out first and the control her alongside using one engine .Then put out a bow and stern line . Job done and make secure with all other lines . Well done for first time solos !

It's nice seeing the Great Orme from a different view (only ever see it from land). Not sure it's worth it as it's a bit of a trek back to near where Boutari came from from, but when I used to live in Criccieth, the mackerel used to come in from the Southwest right into shore on the west side of the castle and then turn back out to sea again - usually being chased by a few dolphin.

Yes mackerel are seasonal to a degree . They also tend to gather into large schools in the summer months .. rather than small groups .. I would suggest playing trial and error with your feathers to rather than just white try multi colours , and get some with real dyed feathers as opposed to plastic ones ..another old tip we used to use on our charter boat was to give the feathers a spray of WD 40 it actually works as a attractive

We always used to catch mackerel on line using feathers and motoring along at 3-4 knots. Not really ever failed and if you have at least 4 feathers on a line and two lines out the back as you motor around, then that is a good amount of bait to get on with.

A string of 4-5 feathers works best for me when I need Mackerel, and I keep the boat moving @ 4-5knots with the engine just above tick over.
@davidplatt41485 ай бұрын
Shifting an engine of any kind into gear makes a loud “clunk” underwater, which is very effective at scaring fish. In most situations the noise most consistently heard underwater is created by people on the boat speaking loudly, laughing, or yelling.
