What she said at 22:40 was irresponsible and incorrect: the availability of hospitals and specialist doctors f***ing sucks in Beaufort. My wife and I are here for the military and she has been shuffled from one “doctor” to the next for the past 2 years for various issues that she has and there’s almost nothing to show for it. We have MULTIPLE friends who’ve experienced similar issues when they’ve sought treatment for various conditions. MOST DOCTORS IN BEAUFORT ARE HACKS. I don’t know if so many of them view all of their patients with cold indifference, but it sure seems like so many use service members in the military and their dependents as cash-cows. My wife and several of our friends have EACH had MULTIPLE useless doctors who only care about suckling at the warm teat of Tricare (health insurance). They know you have few options in this one-horse town so don’t have to actually care: they can just collect money from your insurance provider and then shrug, and there’s basically no recourse in this country if a doctor sucks a$$ but didn’t hurt you through negligence etc.

My wife and I moved to Beaufort in 2005 and built a new home in the Seabrook area (46 Seabrook Point Drive). Hate to say it, but after three years I had no friends at all. The military people were in and then out which is understandable. Many others had moved there ( I assume ) from northern states, and there was the crowd whose families had been there for 300 years. If your family had not been there for at least 100 years you were an outsider. I am not saying all those people were unfriendly, but we always felt completely ignored. After three years of this we moved to Camden South Carolina on Lake Wateree and have plenty of friends. Beaufort is a nice place to visit.

Downtown Beaufort to the ocean is about an 18 mile 24 minute drive. Most people in Beaufort go to hunting Island Park which is on the ocean when they want to go to the beach. Hunting Island is basically a jungle with some parking spots for the beach. It's busy, but there's no shops or restaurants like most busy beaches. U pack what u want/need. There's a pretty /romantic lighthouse there too. Keep driving past and then you land on Fripp Island. $$$$ and exclusive

I am a Beaufort native and I will go ahead and clarify that with the amount of housing developments going on, and commercial developments for shopping centers the charm is running out fast. Its a tourist trap and nothing more. Rent for a typical 600-700 square foot apartment is starting at 13-1400$, the vast majority of jobs here are service related and do not pay well, there are zero entry level jobs that pay well enough to live independently as a single person. Homes such as what I live in are currently selling anywhere between 330k-400k… homes in the downtown area of less square footage as mine are selling for much of the same. It is the typical coastal community in that it if becoming a retirement home and gentrified. There is a housing shortage here and a worker shortage. Lastly the town of beaufort may be 12k but it is surrounded by development. The county itself is 189,700 people. Id say its better than living in a city such as Charleston but without a degree or the stomach to work a few jobs or have multiple roommates good luck. Average hourly wage in Beaufort is roughly 16$ an hour. Theres also plenty of crime, north of the broad river (beaufort) is known for violent crime statistics as per the sheriffs office. In the last few years there has been far too many shootings and murders. The only local beach is hunting island state park and it is a pay to enter and during the summer will be closed at max capacity normally by 10/11 am. With the huge influx of retirees and military I wouldn’t expect rent to become cheaper anytime soon… as a young person living here its hard to get a leg up. Feels damn near impossible unless youve had college and other debts paid for… so bring plenty money either your own or your families. Beaufort is beautiful and i love it here, genuinely, it just isnt as charmed as it is made out to be. Its more working class friendly than a big city but it is still pretty limited.

I so enjoyed you taking me around town again, Nick, and I didn’t even have to pack a bag! I never tell anyone about Beaufort (lol!) as I want it to remain a well-kept secret but a few years ago in a large book store, I happened to see the latest issue of Southern Living magazine ran an article on this lovely town. Title: Here's Beaufort, South Carolina. One of the best small towns in the South. That's a coded message from the City Feller Command Center: "ATTENTION!! We have identified somewhere that does not suck! Please rectify the situation immediately!" Next thing you know, you'll have the people moving in who assure you, "We're the last reasonable people left in CA / NY / Chicago etc. You can close the gate behind us." Funny, the last bunch said the same thing. Then these transplants will start saying, "Oh, you think rent is expensive here? This is nothing! Why, Back Home" (it's always "Back Home") "we thought nothing of paying 3.5 zillion $$$ per month!" This is the first wave who are there to soften you up, and get you used to the idea that the cost of living should be much higher. Then they start trying to turn the place into what they left. Why do you think they put a Whole Foods and Trader Joes in Chattanooga? "We need a Whole Foods and Trader Joes here!" -- Said No Redneck Ever. Why did they try to legalize the rolling stop in Austin? Californians!
@DeaDiabola2 жыл бұрын
Lol, you are being so dramatic, for one. Two, this is the situation EVERYWHERE and it isn't just Californians. You realize its the people who're already in your county taking advantage of the transplant situation and not the transplants themselves, right? Everyone deserves to have a home they love and feel safe in. Step off it.
@DeaDiabola2 жыл бұрын
Also, the only reason Californians say that is because y'all act absolutely loony whenever people say that's where they're from, so they feel like they have to placate the foaming masses of people too thick to see that this is a different world we all live in. We all want to thrive. Not survive.
@leroylowe59212 жыл бұрын
@@DeaDiabola exactly the kind of response I'd expect from a transplant
@dbv24012 жыл бұрын
@@DeaDiabola The issue is transplants moving onto the wonderful new place and then quickly ruining it by trying to turn into the place they just escaped from. If you have the desire to change a place change the one you originated from. The fact is the new guy who moves to the fashionably great place is almost always screwing up that last guys perfect paradise. But still, don't tell us how you just had to live here and then not listen to those who have been maintaining and caring for that place for generations.
@DeaDiabola2 жыл бұрын
@@dbv2401 I mean, I agree with that for sure. I just don't think its strictly a transplant issue. It's a lot of things, unfortunately. I've traveled a lot, and its definitely not just one thing; times overall have changed, attitudes have changed (some for the better, some for the worse) but overall, the exchange of power has changed. It belongs to the corporations. Not the people.

"Looks like a floating assisted living facility." 😂Love the review and the commentary. We will definitely visit once we have completed our move to the Greenville area. Yes, the SC income taxes are killer. Low property taxes but more than made up for by the high income taxes. I'll be going from no state income taxes in WA to 7% in SC. However, the total cost of living is lower, and you never know when Washington State will add on another tax. Personally, I think they should ease up on the income taxes for lower income folk. I don't mind paying that level of tax, but the tax rate of 3% for a $3,000 income going up to 7% for $15,000 is nuts. That means a hard working poor person earning $15,000 pays the same percentage as a person earning millions. Not very fair. For folks nearing retirement, like us, it's not bad as the tax on retirement income is less. SC allows a tax deduction on income from a retirement account and does not tax Social Security benefits, so the actual taxes are closer to 2%. A tax table like that keeps poor people poor, disincentivizes working and is very lopsided. Keep up the great work Nick.

My wife and I are both retired. Most retirement income is non-taxable. We haven't had to pay state income tax in the last 15 yrs. Combine that with low property taxes, and you have one of the best retirement secrets in the country.
@Matt_from_Florida2 жыл бұрын
That state tax table was probably instituted 60 years ago when those amounts were more substantial and they just never updated it.

Nick, good to see you stayed at City Lofts. A tremendous renovation. I was a bit confused by your commentary, though, as it seemed to be a pendulum of thoughts. My contention is that the beauty of Beaufort, my favorite town in the country, is that not all big box/chain restaurants are in view. I will attest, that ghosts do play a big role. To your realtors' comments, please know Beaufort County includes Hilton Head Island, so golf course density is a bit skewed. Beaufort proper, maybe 8-10 courses. Also, while you were on Cat Island for upscale housing, Newpoint, Habersham, Distant Island are some of the higher end communities. Good call on Charleston Light.

Beauford, SC is a happy secret of mine. If I had to move anywhere in mainland USA, Beaufort's it. Hey, Nick! I went to Mikimoto's in my "city" Wilmington DE and ordered what you did as tribute. Lord, man, IMO you have good taste! 😋

I was raised in Beaufort and currently forced to live elsewhere because of work, but man do I wish I was back. But if you’re trying to look for the more rundown/less developed and old you gotta go out to Saint Helena and the Burton Wells area. We also do have a traditional beach it’s just 20 minutes away from Lady’s Island.

"Folks don't wanna work as much" Have you ever worked in a restaurant?? It's one of the worst job experiences you can have and it's fucking degrading. The amount of abuse you get from patrons is ridiculous and the stress levels to the brain when you're weeded out of your goddamn mind is detrimental to your mental health. No one wants that anymore.

I was born and raised in Beaufort. You represented the town well in your video. Taxes are ridiculous here. Homes are very expensive due to the fact that most of the land is so close to water. I’m in the process of purchasing my first home and I am struggling to find something reasonable in the 240K-270K range. A lot of homes are over priced but still sell really quickly because military families are moving here in droves. Crime can be bad, but it’s only bad if you go looking for it. With that being said It is a very charming town. It’s a perfect place to retire. Young people struggle to find things to do. I would’ve moved a long time ago, if it wasn’t for my family’s business. Not the best place to live if you are in you 20’s or early 30’s. The night life is almost nonexistent. Thank God it’s near Savannah GA and Charleston SC. If you live near Beaufort and you are in need of an affordable vehicle stop by Auto Genius USA.

Beautiful Beaufort by the Sea, 26 miles from Yemassee. I love it here. I just hope there’s a lid kept up on the tourism and expansion. We dont want to be like Bluffton and Hilton Head.
