they've trapped themselves into black ops / modern warfare. They tried making Vanguard into it's own "WW2 themed" subseries but people shat on it. Vanguard was meant to be SHG's version of Treyarch's Black ops, and IW's Modern Warfare. Their only option now is either something completely brand new or Advanced Warfare 2. (which I hope its AW2 lol). Boots on the ground cods in my opinion have gotten so tremendously boring.

@@cheezeempire3157 You missed my point buddy... COD is the largest FPS franchise in the entire gaming market, there are so many niches and different subgroups of playerbases... Some people like boots on the ground, some people like exo movement. If they keep releasing boots on the ground for so long - it will get boring for anyone. Hell thats even why there changing the movement now with Tac Sprinting, Omnimovement, and the (rumored) wall running in the upcoming MW4. Wouldn't it be nice if every 3rd year, SHG's version of COD was a bit more futuristic? Wouldn't that change up the same old "boots on the ground" pace? If u don't like that specific year that SHG puts out... then skip that year and wait for Modern Warfare's slow paced camping playstyle, or wait for Black Ops' fast paced arcadey playstyle.

One thing that really bothers about the newer games campaigns is the lack of balls they have. The older games weren’t afraid of controversy, in mw2 you literally commit a terrorist attack, bo1 you kill Castro (he was still alive at the time), bo2 had several lawsuits against it from its portrayal of real life politicians. And nowadays activation is too scared to put swastikas IN WW2!?!!? These newer games fail to say ANYTHING about the conditions of war, or fail to leave an impression. In the focus of trying to appeal to everyone, they manage to appeal to no one.

The thing about the Black Ops games is that title doesn’t really confine them to a specific time period like a WW2 game or a Modern Warfare game does. To me the black ops games are less about a specific time period (although most of the games are set in a time post ww2 - pre modern) and more about the vibe of “under the radar, clandestine” missions

I do think they could do a proper Gulf War game if they want to fill out the 90s more. I know that was the time period and setting for some of BO6, even to the point where it was the development name I believe, but they barely explored it and focused more on the fictional side. They spent like half the game halfway across the world from the conflict and barely even mentioned any real life players or politics. Obviously if they did it anytime soon it would probably be rejected by the wider community as BO6 DLC, just because the average CoD player can’t look past the surface level of time period and the few most memorable missions, but it’s still an interesting time period that they could make another game or two out of without feeling like it’s milking it. I’m talking a game not in the BO timeline, but used to fill out that time period a bit more. Especially since BO is clearly only going to get deeper and deeper into the psychological aspects. Maybe they could use these games, or game, to flesh out their tactical gameplay and realism. Great video btw. I know people say this about every decent small creator, but I really thought this was a bigger channel before I checked. Very well explained and thorough.

Thank you! And I do agree, a deeper focus on a particular conflict could be very interesting. Most CoD games jump around so much that any one particular conflict feels kinda throwaway. A CoD game that sets its sights on one conflict and nothing else could be quite compelling. The last game that kinda did that was WaW imo, and that was still split between two fronts. Unfortunately I think CoD is too married to the globe-trotting setup at this point that something more focused won't happen. But hey, you never know...

The VO for the main character (his name escapes me at the moment) did write a lot if not all of the story for the game, which is pretty interesting. I agree that the world Infinite Warfare takes place in was pretty cool, but at the same time the ending of that game seemed pretty final. It doesn't really set up any sequels. Then again, that hasn't stopped anyone from making sequels before.

Honestly, this was a fascinating analysis on understanding the thematics of the series with the evolution of the weaponizations and the problems that come with trying to commit to an aesthetic while still allowing Warzone to have all the fundamentals that MW19 established, which you highlighted became super problematic when trying to juggle both Warzone and an accurate aesthetic with Vanguard. I also greatly appreciate the fact that, for once, this is a Call of Duty essay that doesn't divert into talking about zombies and how it gets special treatment with the discussion of cod's aesthetics or the predictable Nicki Minaj counterargument that nowadays everyone desperately uses to talk about Call of Duty's evolution (or at times devolution). Hell, you restrained from derailing the conversation into a microtransaction rant unlike so many other videos that can't help but dedicate more time talking about the monetization over the actual analysis of what each cod is thematically. Addimitely it's something that has become more intense as the series has gone on, having actual character skins and not just weapon skins started at around Ghosts (I think), but tonally ill-fitting customization isn't new.

Also a few setting ideas I had: 1: Have Infinity Ward make a WW2 game in the style of MW19 and II. We haven’t yet seen a game in that setting with proper Ground War maps, which I think could be really cool if done right. 2. Alternate-history 1960’s, where WW3 breaks out between East and West but with no nukes.

I wish they either did COD every other year. I saw a post on reddit about this and according to the calculations we would have gotten IW this year! Or even let all the studios do their own sep theme, treyarch does historical, infinity ward does modern and sledgehammer does futuristic. And don't homogenise the game systems, keep them separate and unique. But thats never gonna happen now because of warzone and COD HQ. I'd love either an alt history (i.e. wolfenstein) or homefront style game (ghosts is similar to this).

COD in the past 5 years has built their games around warzone and the "modern warefare" style. They have to stop this. Any warzone updates should only be paired with a newly released infinity ward or sledgehammer title, not treyarch. Treyarch should be given the freedom to make its own style of games and battle royale. Hear this out: A call of duty black ops 3 -themed battle royale. Colourful and vibrant futuristic map with all the specialists from BO3. I thought this was a good idea coz it sort of builds on what made buliding in fortnite so magical: the ability to escape an unfair situation where someone shoots you in the back. E.g. you can use the invisibility speicalist to go invisible for like 2 seconds in order to escape, or use a grapple hook, etc. The advanced movement of BO3 would make this even more of a higher skill ceiling. What do you guys think?

I'm not really a big warzone fan, but I do agree that warzone does at this point make all CoD games feel the same. A truly seperate warzone for each CoD game could be interesting, where all of them do a unique thing. But I think that what prevents that is money and time. More distinct and unique warzone modes would be cool, but also unrealistic from a monetary perspective. It's all C.R.E.A.M when it comes down to it.

I hope they make a modern warfare 4 just to break tradition, but as far as the future entails only they know and I too wonder what they’ll do. COD has some of the best fps developers in the world right now and I’m sure they have some really cool ideas cooking all the time but the fanbase just wants black ops or mw so that’s why it feels like the games are playing it safe. I’ve been saying this since the beta. Bo6 feels identical to mw19-23 now and is just a dlc to them. The over “play style”is the all the same. They added tac sprint, which was cool at first in mw19 but after that and especially now in treyarchs BO game, I really, really don’t like. The way you climb ladders with your pistol in hand, armor plates, weapon inspects are the exact same identical animations and used the exact same identical car model assets as in mw22-23. The mp maps look like maps from MW and the campaign was just like mw22-23 except the warzone assets. It just feels and looks like the MW series/ warzone now when since CW, treyarchs black ops felt like it’s own series. Also the weapon choices are terrible. The jackal is just an ugly, smaller, weirder version of the 74u which is a classic. It just doesn’t look right with the pistol grip and hand guard next to each other and no mag in between. The c9 is obv supposed to be the mp5 but made it like MWs “lachmann” with an even uglier, wider, cut in half front sight post. And realistically, although I know cod’s not realistic, no one would ever use a .22 let alone it kill in 4-5 shots w armor plates when an AR does the exact same? They made the ak74, which is a 5.45 basically the same as a 7.62 ak47 just changed the name. For the pp919, you can add an actual box magazine with the original cylindrical mag still being there which just doesn’t make sense at all. And all the attachments are minimal and are all the same for both American and Russian etc guns. CW actually made the attachments different from each country and looked better altogether. Another thing I don’t like is how when you change the barrel in bo6, it changes the entire hand guards too which most are just fake but another thing that’s from MW. CW only changed the actual length of the barrels. The last half of this was just me saying what I don’t like about bo6 but the first half is saying how bo6 and treyarch now feels and looks identical to infinity wards modern warfare/ warzone bandwagon now. Everyone defending bo6 and whoever says it’s so great and praising it are wrong and they even know it. It’s bc we had high expectations for it and this is what we got. Everyone claims they like it and we want to like it but we all know we really don’t and don’t want to.

What I always liked about the first Black Ops is how unique and feature rich it is. It has so many cool little things going on that no CoD since has even tried to emulate (remember that top-down zombie shooter mode?). Now Black Ops just feels like MW but with a slightly edgier story (maybe).

Where is COD going at this point? Who cares. It's been fun but derivative for some years now. COD MW has been the first 3 games and then the first 3 games remade again. COD BO had a great chance to make an interesting, long-running, clever, historical, x-files style, conspiracy based story. It missed it with BO2. As it is, it's not hard to see where COD is going. They could easily drop everything and just start again and there would be no harm done to COD. This is because there's been nothing special about it since COD BO1 was released.
