We have been on our own. There is no help but the local churches and some very decent volunteers. There is no Fema. I have had to beg these decent proud people in order for them to allow me to help them . Some have cried because in 3 months they have had no help . The local cops in Henderson county and the fire department are nowhere to be found except at the free meals at local churches. I feel so terrible for the many retired old people here.

I've lived in Western North Carolina my whole life. I'll be 40 on Sunday the 29th. This is the saddest and most devastating thing ever to happen here. I deliver roll off dumpsters for a living, and seeing the stuff in person daily is so devastating. Wanting to do more and not being able to is a horrible, helpless feeling. It has affected all walks of life. I can't fathom how so many resources are shipped overseas without a blink, and it takes an actual act of congress to get anywhere. Personally, we were very lucky and had no damage and were only without power for less than a week. But the region as a whole took a hard lick. And all that I've seen personally is neighbor helping neighbor and Americans helping Americans. **** the government!

I’ve lost everything after being diagnosed with a rare disease. The Social Security process is equally slow. If I didn’t have this condition, I would move there in a heartbeat to help rebuild. I have more in common with them than others I meet on the street. I share because I want them to know that it’s not them, their location, their politics, etc. It IS about how the government handles our taxes and treats other countries better than their own. Former Presidents are rolling in their grave. I’m afraid that with each disaster, the American people lose respect for their government. I feel as if this hurricane was the icing on the cake. Thank you for continuing to show people who aren’t here what is really going on. We have been accepting and loading campers with all the food, clothes, household needs and a generator to get families out of tents in the sub freezing temps. We are now losing people to the cold and it rebreaks shattered hearts. Thank you all who have brought us campers to stock and give to these families. Kind Americans have driven from their home states to make sure they arrive safely. Americans helping Americans is the way that anything is getting done. We are still finding remains and most likely will for a long time to come.

I live very close to Swananoaa and I can corroborate everything these people were saying. It was 12 days after Helene before I saw a single person from FEMA. We needed food, water, showers, shelter, clothes, laundry and all we got from FEMA was an application. I am beyond disgusted with my government.

I hope someone from the Gov read this because this should be a Military recovery effort. Get the Core of Engineers in those areas effect to help rebuild bridges and roads at no cost to local governments. Get the reserves in NC and surrounding states to go in and help people clear land and get that trash out of there because it is a health hazard. Get Fema to build temp homes just like the buildings they work out of to all those that need it. This is what a Government should do in a once in a lifetime Or one that cares about it's own people SHOULD do. No way after 3 months with winter coming that area should look like that. The gentleman that you interviewed talking about looters made a B point that many who don’t live here realize….Families here who may have lost family members and all they have are now also split up because CPS can and will take children from their parents if they wish to. Not everyone has family member in a safe home to take children in, and traumatized children don’t have the reassurance and comfort of their parents and siblings after so much loss. The Swannanoa river actually changed its location. In one area it moved a few hundred feet from where it originally ran. Alot of western North Carolina has been destroyed and families have lost EVERYTHING. People who lost homes worth couple hundred thousand were only offered a fraction of what it was worth. People paying on mortgages and rent on houses and land that got completely washed away. Reminds me somewhat of the fire in Hawaii. $750 seems to be what the government thinks the American taxpayers are worth.

It takes zero time this time of year - we had an RV dealership in Manchester TN and FEMA bought every single bunkhouse bumper pull RV we had in the lot before the fema trailers were built for Katrina - so I don’t wave to hear it. I can guarantee the RV dealerships from Knoxville to Memphis would be more then glad to wholesale 20 to 30 trailers to get them off the lot right now

But, we saw it in New Orleans after Katrina, after most of thr California fires, after the Maui fire, and even even after 2024's tornados. FRMA works under a lotmof restrictions but it begins with the state and locals asking for specific help. There were an inadequate number of FRMA trailers ready to move i to North Carolina but North Carolina wouldn't let them travel on the roads.

From what I can tell, early on 90% to 100% of the added road access in the first 2 weeks was provided by citizen action and Duke Energy tree cutters. Clear through most of October '24, most ( probably 60% to 100% depending upon the area) of the public road and bridge access throughout the region was provided via volunteer efforts to include make shift, temporary (?) Measures such as building dirt roads and road beds from the sand and mud, one bridge out there is propped up with stacks of wood pallets coming up out of the middle of the water way, and done by folks with a farm tractor through crews experienced in road and dirt work without an engineering degree. Other roadways are 1 lane affairs (or should be) where even so folks drive as close to the hillside as possible and off the blacktop because the other halfmifmthe road has been undercut. As heavy as a FEMA trailer and tug maybe, a number of these temporary, makeshift road have had truck and trailer combos weighing the one-o-eight-point-eight (108.8 thousand pounds) or at least the 54,000 pounds on a relatively regular basis. Yes, the FEMA trailers may not have been able to reach the upper and further out locations where the need may or may not have been greatest but there were plenty of locations they could have reached where people were still sleeping in tents. A cold 33 to 39 degree (F) rain with occasional wind and snow amid mud and muck in a tent can still feel less than comfortable and put more medically fragile folks at risk for life and limb. Plus the more you get semi-situated, the more resources are freed up for others.

Hopefully part 3 will be down the river into Asheville where homeless camps were swept away, bodies found floating in the Lowes building adjacent to them. And down from there towards Biltmore village where our local food distribution was washed away including 2 vans and 3 large box trucks one floating two miles away into the biltmore estate and one van upright in the middle of the river near the bridge in the village. Where it still is. The truth is they haven’t even cleaned the debris out the rivers yet even in town. The only spot that got the treatment was Biltmore village proper and we all know why. Christmas is the biggest money maker so common sense would tell you they needed to ensure they didn't lose that this year. Don't resent the functioning businesses who are hiring people. This is so sad beyond words, my son and nephew are lineman here in VA and they were sent to FL, SC, and NC to help with getting poles put back up for electricity for these folks and even then they felt it just wasn't enough and wished they could do more, My son was telling me how these poor folks were so grateful and kind to all the lineman considering all they were going through. It gets under my skin so bad knowing what this administration is doing to these people, I've seen where Congress was asking Fema director why they were skipping over houses that had Trump signs in their yard but of course she plays dumb so no shock their or answers. Drive anywhere up US 19E out of Swannona and you'll see things identical to this. Ashville is the priority for the government and 98% of the volunteers gone. Western North Carolina over doubled in population in October but as November rolled around and now it's Christmas Eve here in Avery County N.C. and the volunteers are gone. There may be a few here and there but everyone has forgotten. The damage may be 5 - 10% repaired and that's not the people who live(ed) along the rivers and creeks where everyone has forgotten about.

Most of the flood damage lands are inhabitable due to the toxicity in the mud/dirt that flowed into their land... the more downstream, the worse it probably is. Everyone needs to get their soil tested if they decide to stay. Sadly, there will be long-term effects to the exposure to what is in their soil, if they decide to stay.

@ I also met a wonderful young man from Sudan. He, his brothers and his mother watched their father/husband murdered before their eyes, simply because he had become a Christian. They ran for their lives with nothing but the clothes they were wearing. They spent 3 years in a refugee camps. The mother in one, her children in another. For 3 years, they didn’t see each other. Slowly they were able to come to the USA, it was another year before they were all together again. They received a little help from the government and local churches but the government expected them to fully support themselves after 3 months, and they did. They were expected to learn English so they could communicate and get jobs. All these illegals just walking in and having everything given to them, is a slap in that families face also. Even a bigger slap because of everything they went through trying to get somewhere safe. Those are the immigrants I fully support and welcome
