It's simple. Apple is waiting for other companies to do the heavy lifting in improving foldable devices: minimize/eliminate screen creases; stronger hinges, better water and dust resistance, improve batter life while minimizing thickness. Once they are improved enough, Apple will buy/copy from others and put together their own version then claim to have had been working on it for two decades.

I doubt that; the first iPhone came out when mobile phones were still niche and the top tier product was the good old monochrome Nokia, or the professional-oriented blackberry. Apple came out with the iPhone at a time where things were much cheaper, and the only ones pouring a ton of money on smart devices were professionals. The success came with a good OS, good design and the intuition that the market will expand, so the initial pricing was very aggressive and paid off. 399 of that time are not the same as 1K of today's money, when you buy an iPhone

Apple can't release a foldable 2 in 1 type device, like the Galaxy Z Fold 3/4 device. Especially since Apple has a major app ecosystem problem. As a matter of fact Apple encourages their app developers to make separate iPhone apps, and separate iPad apps. But Apple has gone further down this path of separation by separating iOS. So now there is iOS for iPhones, and iPadOS for iPads. Google and Android do the exact opposite when it comes to app development, where Google encourages app developers to make one app that supports both smartphones, and tablets. Plus Google uses one version of Android for both smartphones and tablets. This is why you will NEVER see a 2 in 1 foldable from Apple. Apple would have to make one OS that works on both of Apple's iPhones and iPads. Plus Apple would have to get their developers to make one app that supports and runs on both iPhones, and iPads. That is not happening anytime soon.
@sgodsellify2 жыл бұрын
It has nothing to do with hardware, or foldable's becoming mainstream. First of all Apple has an app ecosystem problem, and Apple now has 2 versions of iOS. One version for iPhones, and another version of iOS for iPads called iPadOS. If Apple wanted to make a 2 in 1 foldable similar to Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 3/4, then Apple needs to only use one version of iOS for both iPhones, and iPads. Only one version of Android is used for both smartphones and tablets. Plus Google encourages their developers to create one single app that supports both smartphones and tablets. Apple is the complete opposite, where Apple encourages their developers to create separate iPhone apps, and separate iPad apps. So Apple customers will be waiting till kingdom come if they want to see an iPhone unfold to an iPad.

10 years later, and we're doing this again? You know iPhones have that huge notch on the front of the screen, that you only find in $200 phones. Apple does that because they will only release hardware once it's cheap enough to put in their phones. The foldable technology won't be cheap enough for an Apple phone for another 2 years. There won't be a foldable phone in 2023. The functionality of foldable phones has already demonstrated itself, if you've talked to anyone who's ever used one. "You know iPhones have that huge notch on the front of the screen, that you only find in $200 phones" That notch serves a major purpose though. Besides, I don't remember that last time I saw the notch on my phone and it has bothered me. It bothered me for the first 10 mins after buying my phone after which I got used to it pretty quickly (since 99% of the time, you are looking at the middle of the screen). Would the phone display be better without a notch? Sure. But then you would have to sacrifice a very critical feature of the phone (FaceID) to get there. The closed design also means the inner display stays protected from scratches in a pocket/bag/whatever. Most of the Apple people I know see the flip open and want a foldable, they're just want one in the Apple ecosystem.

The only question I leave here is: in 13 generations of phones and 8 generations of tablets, not a single time Apple had to deal with hinges. They remove the mechanical part not because of innovation, but because they do not have he expertise in that area. Why they didn't make VR headsets? Because they do not have the expertise, so it is not convenient to jump in a market segment where you do not have expertise, when you make trains full of money with proven tech. Laptop hinges are a joke; we have laptops since the late 80s, so saying that Apple is on top of their game in terms of hinges is really a funny joke. For innovation on hinges you can swing by to Samsung and Microsoft; which made hinges for their foldable/dual screen devices from scratch, and as now the Microsoft Duo hinge is still considered the best and most innovative hinge design of the past 20 years. Another problem: since iOS 1.0, Apple made clear that portable devices won't use the same OS as their desktop and laptop computers, because they don't want people buying a phone or tablet and use it as computer: they want you to buy the phone/tablet AND the computer. So if you expect foldable devices to be an extension of a computer for example, like Samsung did with the DEX system; you can bet that Apple won't go that way, simply because they think that iOS is "good enough" to get equivalent work to a desktop workstation, so the software running on a potential folding iPad mini would be the same iOS you see now, with some gimmicks to make it fancy when you fold the device in some positions. We have to face the truth here, that Apple, the Apple that used to innovate, died with Steve Jobs. what we have now is a company that make iterative products that just follow whatever the marketing department find out when doing customer research for products. A foldable phone done right, in the old Apple way would be terrific; but a foldable phone made by the current Apple will be just another piece of iterative tech that may keep fanboys with their money ready in their fist, but for anyone else will be yet another meh product, like what we saw in the past 5-7 years or so.

As history shows, apple will release a folding phone when they are happy with the product. when it does release, it will probably have little to no crease and will be very polished/refined even with the first generation. For example, samsung flips and folds had many many problems with the screen, with even the z flip 3 showing wear on the screen after only 1 year.

Seems about right...it took Apple about 5 years after manufacturers like Nokia & Sony had already challenged the need for a separate iPod by making their phones capable of playing MP3 files, to actually release the first iPhone with those same abilities with some weird limitations like Apple always imposes. Plus, it took Apple about 5 years to introduce their first wireless charging phone, after nearly every other manufacturer had been offering it to us as a good alternative to cable charging. Now, 5 years later, they're catching up to the foldable game and I'm willing to bet like everything else they do, it will be limited to what they think you should be able to do with a folding device, as opposed to Samsung's approach which is to open up infinite possibilities for how you choose to use your phone.

Apple will not make foldables until it is sure it can manufacture hundreds of millions of them at a very fast rate while maintaining high quality standards. There is a reason why Samsung sells foldables are such a heavy price, despite being so unpolished as a product. Its because foldable screens are expensive and hard to make. Samsung cannot make them fast enough in huge numbers which is why it has to sell the phones at insane prices. I love the Z Flip series though. Just wish it was cheaper

You need one physical app that supports smartphones and tablets, and one OS for a 2 in 1 type foldable. This is why you will NEVER see a 2 in 1 foldable from Apple. Apple would have to make one OS that works on both of Apple's iPhones and iPads. Plus Apple would have to get their app developers to make one app that supports and runs on both iPhones, and iPads. That is not happening anytime soon.
@siddhantgarg68992 жыл бұрын
so basically what they wll do is the apps will run in ios in shorter screen and when we open it it will run on iPadOS and they will find a way to do that easily
@sgodsellify2 жыл бұрын
@@siddhantgarg6899 Wrong. Try and think. If you install both the iPhone app version, and the iPad app version of the same app. Then how would continuity actually work when a user goes from an iPhone app to the iPad app version? Besides Apple only lets users install the iPhone app version, or the iPad app version. You cannot install both app versions simultaneously on one physical iPhone or iPad. See this is where Android and Google took the correct path for their app ecosystem, as well as the Android version(s) that is needed for foldable smartphone/tablet. Mark my words, if Apple wants to create a 2 in 1 foldable, which is similar to the Galaxy Z Fold 4, then Apple has to merge iOS with iPadOS. Plus Apple has to get their developers to create one app that runs on and supports both iPhones and iPads.
@siddhantgarg68992 жыл бұрын
@@sgodsellify exactly they will merge both ios and ipadOS exclusively for foldable phones
@sgodsellify2 жыл бұрын
@@siddhantgarg6899 Well considering iOS16 has been released, and that version still doesn't support real multitasking, because iPhone users still can't run multiple apps simultaneously on any iPhone screen. But the worst part is Apple's developers still maintain their separate iPhone app version, and iPad app version. Apple developers need to start combining their existing iPhone and iPad app versions into one single app. Yet no developers have started to combine their two app versions into one single app. There is afterall around 500 thousand iPad app versions with their iPhone counterpart app version, and Apple hasn't even started or announced to their developers that is what is going to be happening. If you were an app developer, then you would know that it would take many, many years for Apple's developers to combine the two existing app versions into one physical app. Plus xcode hasn't been changed yet to accommodate that yet. Plus Apple still goes out of their way to get their developers to create separate iPhone apps and separate iPad apps. Therefore it will s safe to say that Apple is NEVER going to make a 2 in 1 foldable like Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 4. Also Android OEMs are on their 4th iteration of foldable's, and still Nothing from Apple. I will bet a BILLION dollars at this point, that you will NEVER see a 2 in 1 foldable device from Apple, period. Your only option if you want to buy a 2 in 1 iPhone foldable, is going to be purchasing an Android foldable. Because you will NEVER see a 2 in 1 foldable from Apple at this point.
