Dune: Prophecy episodes 1 and 2 haven't done much to get people excited about the measely 6 episode miniseries (or long 6 hour movie if you prefer)
This show might have broken Steven. He's doing accents and shouting lore at Dan who has no idea what an Ixian is or why a Sandworm has a furnace in its belly.
Steven is the Chad Book Reader and Dan is the Average Movie Enjoyer!
Let them break down and over-analyze the episodes for you!

Valya: driven by pride, seizing power of the sisterhood, manipulating the imperium, humbled by a “true believer”. Especially after the establishing third episode. You seem to be searching for a hero to cheer for, like Paul the saviour of the last pretty, dumb, Dune movies. Best impression: Frank Skinner being forced to watch science fiction 😃

Valya probably, she seems to be the closest to the BG that I know. Fimmel’s character is interesting but IDK if that’s just not that I really enjoyed him in Vikings and he’s effectively playing the same character of a prophet. Like Mark Strong as the emperor but he’s had better roles.

This is not Dune. Nothing written by Brian Herbert is Dune. His books are full of plot holes just like this terribly written formulaic trash. If he wasn't called Herbert Brian would never had been published, his writing is that effing poor.

I feel they could have just lifted the opening - beat for beat - with GoT and just gone straight to the Harkonnen homeworld. Shown them carving up whale meat, mentioned they're on down times, Valya and a sympathetic Tula and her brother Griffin being the only active members of the family. End of episode one - Valya saves Griffin with the Voice. What's this? Go into episode two. Griffin gets called up to Laansdraad to try and rectify the damage to the family name. End of episode - comes back dead. Valya who -earlier - turned down a request to join a creepy sisterhood, changes her mind and joins - with the intention of proving it was Atreides messing with them again. Tula runs from home and meets a boy. End of third episode - realizes he's an Atredes and at that moment receives a visit from her sister. Rest of series is machinations - slaughter of Atredes, uses the voice as a weapon, gains control of sisterhood. Forget all the present day stuff. if you get a second season, more the clock forward 30 years and deal with Desmond as stranger that disrupts the Emperors court and threatens Valya's control over everything. TLDR: this show needs focus and fewer characters and no flashbacks. it's only 6 episodes!

Yeah but this isn't based in Book 5 and 6 which are actually awesome stories. This show is based on Brian Herbert's awful side stories. Everything Brian added to his father's world is just terrible. Not to be mean but the first 6 books, even at their worst, is so high quality compared to everything Brian Herbert touched. They would've been better off just writing their own original story within Frank Herbert's Dune universe

Ok so this entire thing boils down to they aren't capable of parsing what the show is telling them so they think it is bad. I'm sorry but not everything has to hold your hand.

@GiovanniAuditore I simply disagree. The show is very well written. Can you cite a simple example where you think the writing is lacking?
@GiovanniAuditore
@GiovanniAuditore 2 ай бұрын
@@GageEakins I honestly I don't know where some of these stupid ideas came from to begin with, whether from the show writers themselves or Brian Herbert's books, but the show just doesn't understand what the Bene Gesserit are meant to represent. The idea that Valya is the one who single-handedly developed the Voice is laughable, instead of a collaborative effort of generations of Bene Gesserit wisdom. The characters are also very uninteresting and the dialogue is at times either extremely dry or generic.
@eja9539
@eja9539 Ай бұрын
A lot of what is said is either 1. immediately contradicted by the characters actions 2. so vague that they could mean anything or nothing at all 3. never explained enough to have a compelling build up. It’s just dropped on us like a turd. Example Ynez says “I’ve performed my duty. If my father gave you orders to watch me, then you’d better keep up.” Instead of having Emperor Javicco confronting his daughter about the stunt she pulled at the Laandsrad, we have this throw away line instead. it also implies that Ynez is being watched closely which is completely contradicted at the end of the story where she just strolls into Kieran’s holding area without a single guard to stop her. Then there’s all the vague bullshit the sisters have been spouting without evidence of prior knowledge. It’s badly written the way that the Star Wars prequels are. Which is a shame because 80% of this show is 2 people talking.
@GageEakins
@GageEakins Ай бұрын
@@eja9539 The one specific example you cited isn't really that big of a problem. It is a little strange that she was allowed to speak with the prisoner. However, it is possible that she simply asked to speak with him and was allowed to do so. We didn't get a confrontation between her and her father due to time. I do have a problem with that, that it is only six episodes. I hate that and that is all on the network, not the showrunners.

Shilleneuve is an Instagram Director. Shilleneuve hates actual storytelling and his version of Dune is a panoramic turd, sprinkled with gold dust and diamonds. Eye candy but nothing you can bite. His characters were cardboard and the movie was so ANTI-STORY that fan made explainer videos have become a BUSINESS MODEL. Foundation is such a weird series. The bits based on the actual books, Hari Seldon and Psychohistory are a terrible adaption. They take the idea of a universe where only the historical movements within society are important and individuals (except for one major exception) do not matter at all and completely misinterpret it into a world where individuals change the universe around them. Psychohistory itself cannot work at all if individuals are that powerful - which is the problem that the Foundation faces in the third book of the original trilogy. (Oh and they also take one of the most prominent pacifist hero figures ever, Salvor Hardin, famous for the quote "Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent" and turn them into a gun-toting action hero.) And yet, the completely invented stuff for the series relating to the emperor clones and the political machinations is really, really good. The worldbuilding, the writing, the acting, the sets are all excellent. It feels like someone had a really, good script for a proper 'Game of Thrones' space opera and was then forced to stick some Foundation stuff in there because their boss had just bought the rights.

Steven says its fine the stuff left out of the movies, go read the book. I counter, Dune is a really average read, its been improved upon a thousand times by now and it reads like it. The best stuff in the Dune books, is the weirdest stuff, its the stuff that went on to inspire things like Warhammer and a thousand other properties. It features in the movies barely ( and very little even in the Lynch version ), and it is by far the worst thing about cinematic Dune. Claiming it would fail if it included it is such bullshit. Its a failure of imagination, and one of the worst things about Dune adaptions, watching you hand wave it was hilarious. No wonder you liked the Dune movies, which were dull as hell. Also with Game of Thrones shitting the bed as bad as it did in S8, means you don't have to use it as an analogy for political games forever now.
