It's interesting watching a trained artist vs a "guru". Robert, Wayne Goss, Bobbi Brown, Whitney Hendrix, Jackie Aina ect... Have totally different techniques than the gurus. They also make it a point to tell you the difference between natural, day, night, editorial and stage make-up.

Shao-Ning - I use foundation brushes to buff things out so they aren’t so concentrated/bright. Definitely start with a small amount of product but remember that almost everything can be fixed - worst case scenario, you need to cover it up and start again. I like to practice when I don’t have to be out the door like ten minutes ago.

I learned how to do blush back in the mid 80s to 90s or so - back before contouring was a ‘thing’ for everyday people. So, I’m working to relearn where blush should go. Some days I get it right... and I’d like to have more of those. So, thank you so much for posting this. Subscribed!

This is exactly how I think of it! It's the difference between saying "You have to wear blush" (not true) or "If you have a round face, you need to apply blush this way" (also not true), and "If you apply blush in a certain way, you will get a certain effect" (true). I'll kick anyone who tells me I can't wear blush on the tip of my nose; I think it looks cute as hell 😂

Thank you. I would watch a part two since it would be helpful to talk about the different sections of the face (forehead, middle, nose to mouth) when it pertains to contour/blush. Also different effects you can create with blusher like a mild sun burn and how to adapt that to a round face, a long face, and a triangle/pear face.

I just recently found your videos and they are amazing. So user friendly for the novice MUA. One of the topics I would love you to expand on is application tips/tricks for uneven facial features. One eyebrow/eye is slightly lower than the other and I try to even them out using makeup to no avail.

Definitely true. There ARE some rules to applying makeup, for sure. Much like building a townhouse, there are certain things that you have to construct, in order to call the structure you build, a townhouse. If you forgo certain structures, that’s totally fine but!, the finished product will probably be called something other than a townhouse . Maybe it’s more of a Colonial style then. Doesn’t make what you created wrong, just different. 😉

I do have a longer face (its more diamond shaped), but I apply my makeup to accentuate the length, rather than make my face appear more rounded. I just like the bone structure, etc. of longer faces :) I know that oval faces are considered the "ideal" shape for makeup, but I've always thought diamond and heart shapes are the prettiest!

Thanks so much Robert. In my mid sixties I’ve a longer face, but still have a nice facial balance. This year I started using The Ordinary products, and begun wearing make up. When I was younger, I looked after my skin, with very little make up. Now I am learning all over again, and transformed but was confused with the different views on the cheeks. My favorite way to wear blush is to have a more "nude" blush on the outer 2/3s of my cheekbone with a small pop of a more pink/red blush right at the beginning of the inner third (but not all the way to the nose). It adds nice dimension to the face and emphasizes my high-but-not-prominent cheekbones without actually lifting them (which makes my eyes look small) or dragging my face down (which just makes it look like I'm wearing 10x more makeup than I actually am).

This is really important but some girls seem to be resistant to any reasonable advice. I have a friend she wants her nose tip to look sharper and more pointy BUT she puts constantly a ton of highlighter ON the tip of her nose. And then complains: my nose tip looks so huge....🙄 and when I told her why her answer was: yeah but on IG (gurus) it looks so bomb, they also put it on the tip.... 🙄🙄 Alright girl, do whatever you want🤷🏼♀️ they want to change things but if you tell them how, they still know better...😂

The movement of egirl/Asian Beauty/allergy chic has actually improved my blush game a ton! Bringing the blush up and more around the cheeks makes me look more cherubic and refreshed instead of overworked and tired.

I just put a dot of cream colour about two fingers space slightly diagonal from under the centre of my eye/pupil onto the cheek ( I have very slim fingers so thats not too far down) and blend it towards my temple, still focusing most pop of colour on that centre point. Have no idea if it's the right thing to do for my face shape but it looks sorta cute I guess 😅

i just realized how much more like James the "round face" side looks! You two have always looked different to me, but now I realize it's part because you contour to change your face shape and without makeup you look even more alike! Anyway, that's just my epiphany lol.
