Two days ago I discovered your channel. I was attracted by your Philip Glass videos and immediately loved the way you share your knowledge in a unique and calm way. Complete different like the "screaming" KZbin. Then you showed Steve Reich ( an inspiration for me in uninspiring musical times) techniques, afterwards you told me about synthesis in a way where I was getting the basic knowledge and principles how sound works ( after forty years of " fiddling, tryin and not knowing" ) and now you show these principles in Diva ( my favorite synth ). I am so glad I've found this channel. I can only assume that you are into zen philosophy (according to the enso on your homepage), but it would explain the purity, focus and calmness of your videos. Thank you

Thanks for discussing this fascinating subject. For a time, I really liked synth music. My interest started in the mid-1970's with Carlos' "Switched-on Bach", and continuing with programming my own synth in the early 80's. I tired of synthesized music when everyone started doing it, a lot of it crappy. One of the biggest problems was the attempt in uninspired movie and TV scores to emulate orchestral music without the nuances in performance and timbral complexity. My interest in programming synthesizers has been reawakening, especially with movies like Tron Legacy and Blade Runner 2049, which showcase the synthesizer as its own rich and complex instrument. Recently, I have been a snob for orchestral sample libraries, but I am becoming aware of great virtual synths with wonderful sound design capabilities. I already have a few of these, and I think I will eventually get back to programming, though my current focus is to learn how to write and record music. Again, thanks. Peter.

This is so true… the emotional impact of a specific instrument’s timbre, or tonal quality, is immense. Back in the 1980s, the jazz group, Oregon, came into the studio I was working at. For their session, they requested a Steinway grand with a specific serial number because of its tonal quality. The emotional impact of a particular instrument of a particular instrument family (I.e., acoustic guitar, electric bass, acoustic piano, etc.) will make an immense impact on the overall appeal of any song. I’ve always known that timbre is one of the most underrated qualities of music. GREAT VIDEO!
