where to buy a smocking pleater?

I found a Sally Stanley pleater a few weeks ago at an estate sale for $25. Our community sewing club mentioned the sale on their FB page so it was probably another club member. I went and waited in line outside for 45 mins to get in. I know that is going to be rare, but several years ago I had bought a Martha Pullen Pleater for $30 on the marketplace it works great. I am hearing mixed info on the needles if the generic replacement needles that are suppose to work for it actually do when I need more. So they are out there but I would be really surprised if I come across any other deals like those again. I had bought my first pleater almost 40 years ago a 16 row Read from a woman selling smocked garments at a craft fair while on vacation, she also sold smocking supplies. I had to bring it back home with me the TSA agents where going crazy checking it out and didn't know what to do but they finally let me take it on the plane, that would not happen now.

I’m borrowing a pleater from a relative. If I love smocking, yours would be available just in time for me to buy my own. This is amazing you are even working on one!

I bought my pleaters around 10 or 15 years ago and they were pricey then. But I love them both. It will be wonderful to see yours on the market in the future.

I carry smocking pleaters in my Etsy store. Etsy does have fees, and there are taxes, shipping supplies and the marketing. They cost a little more, but I am not making a huge profit. Also they quit making the Amanda Jane in 2013, they just retired, so they are no longer being made (the price has gone way up since you bought yours). I have a couple of thread boxes that I want to build my version of before I sell them. The Dianne Durand runs off bobbins on a bar and doesn't need a thread box. I will send you some photographs.

Facebook marketplace has used pleaters in my area. Also I use Tosca company for needles. I got stung on eBay needles.

Farmhouse Fabrics is a superlative company. I am only beginning to deal with them (OK, I bought one pattern to see how it would go), but they were as patient and courteous as if I had been spending THOUSANDS of dollars. Now, a pleater isn't my problem. Finding replacement needles IS a problem. I bought on eBay a set that was SUPPOSED to fit my pleater. They DIDN'T. I went to a local small mom-and-pop fabric and sewing machine shop and they told me that needles are no longer being made for any pleater anywhere. I really HOPE that isn't true.

I found--totally serendipitously--Ian Rundle's website and there is a rather good instructional video on how to pleat a bishop without the sleeve seam going kitty-wampus. there's no magic link, especially right now with covid-19. farmhousefabrics.com sells the read pleater (bit.ly/2trcQhT) but it's out of stock currently. ebay and craigslist are other options, but with both of those, you have to watch and look out for listings... pleaters are becoming harder and harder to come by. hope that helps.
