Caught my first shad right off a dock with no tell tale shad jumping around. Let my net drop about 10 feet. I could feel them pushing against as it was dropping. Got a bunch on first throw. Great tips

Awesome video , you pretty much cover all the location that I can think of ! I sometime bring blender grind dry dog food powder and toss it out and wait half hour before tossing my cast net just for fun and wind up catching shad and shrimp too at night , Crazy fun !

Great tip! I've never thought of chumming before throwing the net out!

@@InformedOutdoors. yeah .... pick a dark quiet spot near by and toss your dry grind dog food . Go catch shad for 20-30 min. Come back to your dark spot area and catch shrimp . Im from New Orleans and you catch these huge brown gulf shrimp just about any where . They come out the gulf to go inland to breed during breeding season from what I read .

I'll have to give it a shot next time I'm out.

Awesome video! Could you explain the back of shallow bays better?
@InformedOutdoors5 жыл бұрын
Sure! Any cove that gets shallow toward the back. This is pretty much your standard cove but some have steep drop offs. Find one that has a very gradual slope. Hopefully that helps.

Hey dude To put shed in the freezer in a freezer bag should you put salt on it a preservative salt thank you God bless you
@InformedOutdoors5 жыл бұрын
Actually the best thing to do is when you're catching shad to stock up, throw them in a cooler filled with saltwater and ice. That will get their temperatures down as quickly as possible, which will help prevent them from starting to break down before you even get them home in the freezer. I've never frozen bait (shad or skipjack) in water, but I would think it would just take you a lot longer to thaw when you wanted to use them. Thanks for watching and commenting!

If you freeze them in water they hold their texture way better

my problem is less finding shad and more like making my cast net throws resemble a circle instead of a crumpled up napkin
@InformedOutdoors2 жыл бұрын
What’s always helped me is to think about it like throwing a frisbee. Keep it flat instead of throwing at an upward angle.

Also, make sure there are no tangles before you throw
@stephensmith7202 Жыл бұрын
Make sure that you get a good spin on it! The centrifugal force will open it up! That will be the hand that holds the majority of your net. Good luck! Keep practicing…..eventually it make perfect.

Do Shad live in the Ohio River? Specifically, the northern panhandle of West Virginia. When I cast net in nearby creeks, I usually just catch shiners and suckers. Thanks!
@InformedOutdoors5 жыл бұрын
Yes, the Ohio River and all of West Virginia have gizzard and threadfin shad. Just have to keep throwing that net until you're ready to quit! lol That's usually how it works.

I’m in Utah now grew up in Colorado. I never seen anyone throw a cast net. Decided lake mead 1 hr. Away was great for Stripers using live bait “anchovies” is what they called ones you buy in Overton nv years ago. Got a net and figured I would practice in Utah. Every warden guy I run into say can’t use them. They’re legal but no one knows about them and automatically want to give citations. Where’s the Come’ON sense people used too have.
@InformedOutdoors3 жыл бұрын
Do they actually give the citations?

Instead of pointing the camera towards yourself why not show proof?

It's just the type of video I prefer to shoot. No fancy camera angles or drone flyovers. Just the information. Any other video I've watched on the topic just has someone on a boat saying pretty much what I've said, or a voice over of someone throwing a cast net. The information is what's important. Thanks for commenting!
