Where do you think the line should be drawn between plagiarism vs. tropes and conventions vs. taking inspiration from an existing piece of work? And if something is inspired by an existing piece of work, should it be published and sold as an original piece of work, or should the creator be acknowledging the owner of the original IP somehow?

Well it's a good Idea, but the thing here is what If you competed a project and you wanted to publish it here's come the action. However, there is a lot of project and things in this world been created thousand years ago and yet we still do create a new versions of same thing that exist. Although it depends on what piece of work you are inspired about also, if you really started doing it and you think it's worth to sell it because you almost changed a lot of things on it and your fantasy worked it out to create something brilliant then why not if you actually did put some effort working on this project.

Ooo yes!!! I really enjoyed the masterwork experiment and I wish we’d gotten more conclusive results! I’m sure there’s some sort of legalese on this but it definitely seems like a big grey area! One of the thing that’s interesting about Harry Potter is that they seem to have trademarked a TON of the character names in recent years (and other names too like Hogwarts etc.) But most authors don’t trademark all their proper nouns -it’s interesting how switching some names and details for 50 Shades made it ok to publish. Like as long as it’s not immediately recognizable as the other story it’s ok (??) Ankther thing I’ve noticed is sometimes when I’m reading one author super intensely, my writing may start mimicking their voice subconsciously (like how you start talking like your friends). Is that copying? Plagiarism? Great video topic!!

I noticed the same thing, about taking on the voices of other authors! Not so much now, but definitely when I was younger - my sister even started reading one of the authors I liked at one stage and commented that his writing was like mine. 😂

What about all the stories based on Shakespeares works

I'd say in current internet culture plagiarism is much less frowned upon than it used to be. There is just so much exposure to so many things that is almost impossible to avoid slipping in parts of other works, even subconsciously.

I also think the 'there are no original stories' element plays a part - I had someone ask if I'd seen The Boys after reading Powerless. I'd never seen it, yet they noticed overlaps.
