You really need your own show. I watch discovery and history channel shows and enjoy them immensely but I can't afford half a million to a million for all the start up. This is more realistic for someone that wants to do it on a budget. I could do this full time but Mississippi has zero gold. That's my dream. 48 and not getting younger. Keep it up.

I pan on a creek in Brown County about 7 miles East of Salt Creek, its my little Hot Spot. Nothing like Arizona I am sure but still some nice color. If you ever come to Indiana, some of the public places you can only use a bucket, small shovel, sluice only. Nothing with a motor, I have the number to call to get a free permit, which you have to have. Keep the videos coming :) IndianaGoldHunter

I would start off with a Garret Super Sluice Gold pan and the Garret Gold panning kit that has the snuffer bottle and the finishing pans as well as the classifier. You can get them all from Desert Outfitters just by calling Pat ( Rick is out for Surgery ) at ( 702 ) 362-7177 and tell'em Jeff and Slim sent you. This is what you will need to start with and get good with the Gold pan because you will use it all the time to sample with. Jeff

My aunt had a store/bar called the twin gables in Nelson and some of my uncles worked the mines and mills in nelson before they were shut down in WW2. John Weyerhauser (of later forest products fame) was a big investor in the nelson mines, and lived in nelson for a time. You may also want to rake the dumps (minerals heaps outside of a mine, and check for gold or silver with a metal detector- It helps if you have good hearing (mine is shot). There's gold in the washes but it's really small stuff. Get a big shop vac and a generator and start vacuuming the areas where the rock layers come to the surface. Those cracks are where the gold is. Forget about water reduction; just rake off the dirt on the surface and expose the jagged rock. Then get out the vacuum cleaner and work the wash area. In most of the places no one will ever bother you. Put the vacuumed dirt into a bucket, and haul it home where you can be in comfort and leisure. I don't particularly like the desert Fox, but a Keene 25" spiral wheel will get most of the gold; fine or not so fine, While the wheel is turning, add some jet dry to the water as a wetting agent (for real), and get a real powerful neodymium magnet to clean out some of the black sand while the wheel is turning (try Desert OutFitters).

Hi Mr Williams, great teaching as allways, how do I crush my rocks down to a size to pan or run through a dry washer, also what size drywasher do you use . the keene 140 or 151. thanks again, from the Crusher!!!
@Askjeffwilliams
@Askjeffwilliams 9 жыл бұрын
+Thomas Szceszinski Hi Thomas , the cheapest way is with a mortar and pestle ( check the link ) and if you have money to spend a small sampling mill ( Cobra Crusher ) works great. Hand crush and run material through a # 20 screen ( window screen ) and pan out the fine material. Use a 10x or stronger Jewelers loop to inspect the final panned down material for signs of fine Gold. If you have Gold in the rock then you will have to crush all of you rocks down to -20 mesh and run that ( wet ) through a Blue Bowl ( cheapest way ) or RP - 4 shaker tables. Would not recommend running through a Drywasher. We use the new Keene 140s model. Another area that's kind of neat is to take the Big Wash road up to Windy Point and check out some of the mine dumps in the area above Chloride. I picked up a rock up by the Rainbow Mine and threw it into my truck and took it home as a lawn ornament. A couple of years went by and while re-arranging the yard, I picked up the rock that broke in two. That sucker had four ounces of gold in it. Trouble was, I couldn't remember the exact place I found that rock (it seems one always finds what they're not looking for). People I know have found picture rock (rocks with visible gold) in the areas above Chloride, just don't be going into the dang mines!! radon and lack of oxygen, and some rock waiting for some fool to pass under, and a big noggin splat! Back to Silver Chloride, which is a mineral that looks like bone. Silver and chlorine; all miners had to do was heat it in a frying pan and as the chlorine vaporized, fairly pure metallic silver was left. When you go into Chloride, you'll note these big rows of dirt off to the southern side of the road. What miners did was dig up the area where the silver chloride could be located, then got out their frying pan.... NOBODY ever gets all of the goods, and most people/miners didn't get all of it either. You may not know this but the 'goods' out of Chloride was rich enough that it would be freighted over to the railroad in Kingman; shipped across the United States, loaded onto a barge and sent to Wales for refining. In a month or two, paychecks would show up. It may pay off to take a course in prospecting; nothing is ever truly exhausted

Holy crap! I know right where you're at! That mine is right behind my house! I'm not about to give away the location or the name, but right when you got to the stay out stay alive signs I knew where you were at. There's a pile of cans from the old mining operation at the northern side of the hill, another well defined mine entrance on the next hillside to the east, and a road on the southern side with a large landing that could easily have been a campsite.

Thanks Jeff! I've been checking out your videos. Just wondering if you only go where gold has already been mined of if sometimes you go prospecting for brand new strikes. Seems like you have the geology knowledge to go read the rocks and maybe find a virgin lode, which I would think could possibly be much richer than worked claims.

I live in an area with extensive gold deposits. My question has to do with claims, and if you are out prospecting should you have a map of claims, there is alot of land out there near me, with ore poping out of montainsides. please advise.

115F and leather on...brutal. I know, I use to be a pipe welder in CA. sporting leather pants, leather jacket (full), leather head hood most of the time since there would often be 1-2 guys welding nearby (backflash prevention). Leathers would have an 1/16-1/8 inch formation of salt crystals on them by lunch time.

This is a great example of seeing the vlf in action. Can we see the rock being crushed somewhere? I have never done it and would like to see how. Thanks Jeff, awesome Video!

Jeff, before you removed samples was your VLF picking up the gold or just high mineralization? I only ask because the area I'm looking at is quartz monzonite with pyrite veins. So I'm trying to shorten the learning curve. Should I be looking for limonite that's dropped out as an indicator?
