I live in Jamaica and charcoal is easily attainable and cheap and that's what i use for my orchids and they are healthy.

Local pet stores should also have charcoal since it's used in terrariums. Oyster shells should also be available since it helps with bird digestion.

ah I never thought of that . Oyster shells you just have to be aware if they are whole they can retain small puddles of water which can be problematic 👍

And - added bonus .... when, as a rank beginner, you inevitably kill some poor orchid, you can just chuck the whole lot onto your braai! 😂
