Once in how many days to water orchid in charcoal potting medium?
@thenaturecompany Жыл бұрын
if it is just plain charcoal you will have to water very frequently compared to bark or sphagnum moss

I've noticed that freshly made biochar has a tendency to hamper plant growth. For my terras preta production therefore charcoal/biochar must be mixed with organic matgerial and be put on a compost heap for microbiome to move in. Do you use composted charcoal or do you use charcoal as it comes from the burning/charring process?

oh you have taught me something .. I buy agricultural charcoal but have not looked into the process they put it through before calling it agricultural charcoal .. When I was buying in bulk it would lie on open ground exposed to the elements . Perhaps that made a difference . Now just growing at home I buy small bags from the supplier.

I’d like to get them but I can’t find them where did you find them? Online charcoal are small, nurseries don’t carry them if you could provide the location where to get them

I prepare charcoal from wood cuttings, woodchips, sawdust, rejects from firewood production (lts of bark and woodsplinters). I put them into empty food cans (2.5 liters/4liters, make sure there is no paint or burn it off before use), put the lid on it again and put it into my wood oven on some burning wood. The pyrolysis gases escape through the gap between the lid and the body of the can. After approximately 3 hours the long yellow flames cease and the process is finished. Then transfer (use metal pliers/metal bucket for transport) onto a sand bed, wait for appr. 10 min, cautiously extinguish any embers inside with water. The size of your starting material decides the size of your product, whether you get lumps, granular or powdery material. The charcoal thus made must be composted (mixed with at least 2 volumes of fresh organic material, set aside on a heap to rot) for appr. 1 year to be terra preta. I asked this channel whether his charcoal is freash or needs to be composted too. There are lots of channels showing how to make biochar/terra preta on YT.

Home depot .. not in garden area. Its where the grill charcoal is displayed. NO BRISQUITS GET THE 100% natural charcoal lumps. RED OAK BRAND. If not then make sure the charcoal has no added ingredients like fire starter in them.
