Life in Spain: Valencia vs Barcelona
In today's video I will compare the life in Valencia, Spain to the one in Barcelona. It is very different when you visit each city as a tourist and when you actually live there. This is a personal decision since we all have different priorities but I will compare, food, transportation, parks, cost of living and hopefully at the end you will have a better idea which city is better to live in.
Both cities are similar but they still have some pretty solid differences. Let me know in the comments which city you like better.

I am from Barcelona. Born, raised and lived there for 32 years. Spent 2 yrs. working overseas and finally moved to Valencia 10 years ago. My opinion. If you're single and have good incomes (very important) which allows you to live and work inside the city limits and not far awary, and you don't speak spanish, definetly BCN is your place. But keep in mind this 2 factors because they are essential (SINGLE & GOOD INCOMES). Now, if you're carrying a family with you, specially kids, so your priorities are good education, International schools, a bigger house possibly with somme ammenities (garden, swimming pool, sport areas..etc) then no doubt, your place is Valencia.

That's an inciteful comment you made towards the end which I can relate to- about what becomes important to you after you have lived for a while and seen many things. I have lived most of my life in and around NYC. I am starting to evaluate cities for the next phase of life, and Valencia is the first one I'll try. Your videos have been so helpful, thank you very much! I have a few other cities in mind: Marseilles, Genoa, Palermo, Lisbon, and Bilbao. Maybe you could try them first and make videos?! 🤣🤣

Depends of what are you looking for and your lifestyle: Barcelona is much more open minded and cosmopolitan, its very vibrant , Valencia its a beautiful city ,has amazing beaches and good infrastructure, nice teraces but it dose not offer a buzzing creative atmosphere, its rather a chill town ,good for families and quite afordable, but if you are looking for something more sophisticated than Barcelona is definitely your choice

So glad you are feeling better! Great information and visuals. Man, those fallas crowds are wild! I attended Las Fallas in 2004 as part of my curso intensivo for our semester abroad in Madrid. I hated Valencia after that and have never gotten over it. It was my first experience there. As soon as we got off the bus, teenage boys started throwing these tiny fire poppers at our legs and feet. They scared me and it stung a little. The crowds were overwhelming and we couldn´t find a bathroom. The effigies were impressive, but the fires were so intensive and the heat from the crowds made me feel uncomfortable. We arrived early in the day and left after midnight and arrived home in Madrid exhausted. I returned in 2008 because a girlfriend and I were staying in Barcelona and she wanted to take a train down the east coast of Spain and see Valencia. This experience was better, but all we did was tour a museum in the ciudad de artes y ciencias. It was exhausting. Contrast my experiences with your videos. I see beautiful parks, cute restaurants, cafes, and bars from your videos. I´ve never been to the Valencian beach. You show me colorful labyrinth like neighborhoods that remind me of Madrid de los Austrias. My reaction is like, "that´s Valencia"?! I need to try Valencia again. People swear by it. Maybe the 3rd time is the charm? I also don´t know how to navigate Valencia. I don´t think I can walk from the beach to the historic city center to the cuidad de artes y ciencias. I think maybe the city is really spread out? I love Barcelona, but I have to confess, I´m bitten by the Madrid bug. I just can´t get enough of Madrid. I really appreciate your videos comparing the major cities of Spain.

Hello Antoanetta, my wife and I will be visiting Valencia this summer 2022 for two weeks to walk, see, and breathe in it's life. We also want to move to Valencia for a few months next year and your videos have been very inspiring. For what I've seen everything is gorgeous though we tend to like more of the newer parts like Gran Via or Ruzafa, which is probably where we'll look for a place. We do love the old town, it's history and stories too however but prefer less noise and more relaxation. We've visited Madrid and Barcelona in the past but we are looking for something more slow paced to enjoy so we're excited to move to Valencia for a few months and experiment. Plus we live in San Diego so we think we'll feel right at home being at a coastal city which I think has somewhat similar weather. Love your videos, thanks.

There are also people preferring to live just outside of the city which offers a middle ground? People who want to live in more green surroundings near Barcelona tend to choose a place like Sant Cugat. Or people who like the beach choose Gava, Sitges or Castelldefells. I wish I could afford to live on the foot of the Tibidado myself. What are the places people can choose from near Valencia?

Minute 3:50 l am with you, Barcelona is more avant-garde and multicultural whereas Valencia is more... kind of traditional and less entrepreneurial, hence there are less job opportunities and salaries are lower, but the Turia garden is a hot spot for those who value green areas. The current mayor is actually an agricultural engineer and holds a PhD. You may like or hate his political views, but it is undeniable ... The chap knows how to run the city for all its dwellers. In fact, now citizens and tourists alike can visit the city Hall for free, has pedestrianised some streets in the historical city centre, create bicycle lanes, etc. Barcelona is more business-like (la pela es la pela = money moves the world [rough translation] ) but both catalans and valencians are proud of their cities. Good Video. 👋👍

Both cities have their merit. Valencia has better weather and is more quiet. Barcelona has a larger cultural offering in terms of theaters, movie houses. And more varied food. Valencia has a nicer park in the Turia park. Barcelona on the other hand has the Tibidabo, Collserola range and Montjuic but you need to get there first. Valencia has a better beach but Barcelona has Sitges around the corner which is an awesome place to go to. And for living Castelldefells is hard to beat. Near the city but on the beach. The mid-mountains and mountains near Barcelona are better. You can go skiing from Barcelona. Either in la Cerdanya or the Vall d'Aran. The countryside in Catalonia is generally greener and cooler. You have places like la Cerdanya to escape the summer heat. The coast around Valencia is warmer but from Barcelona you can go through the Costa Brava which is less developed and greener. Valencia has a great city centre but outside of it you don't have the variety of neighborhoods of Barcelona. The Valencia region has lots of automotive related industries and a massive harbour. Barcelona has industry, a harbour, services and IT. For sports Barcelona wins. Valencia is cheaper.

I’m considering Valencia and Lisbon. I find Valencia more interesting (sights, cultural options), but I like the value Portugal offers (golden visa, cost of living, etc). My plan involves, living as a retired expat from the usa, a home purchase, enjoying my city, and traveling). I wonder about some intangibles, are the citizens welcoming to other nationalities (from South America, Central America, as well as the USA ) and if my partner was 30 years younger than myself (social biases). The differences in the welcoming environment that each city would offer. I’m in the determining stage now with eyes to visiting both areas in late 2023, and deciding early 2024. Any helpful thoughts?

I love your videos and the passion you show for my home town! I am original from Valencia and have been an expat myself living in the UK, NL, France, México and Cataluña. I work in the tech industry and it's true what you said about work in Barcelona. However, having lived there for 7 years ( in different periods), I have seen and experienced that nationalistic nasty thing that has been growing over the years, damaging and corrupting everything. Maybe if you are a foreigner it does not bother you so much, but being spanish and not sharing or agreeing on that nationalistic fight against Spain makes it really hard to be able to settle there. It is a beautiful city but not a place where you would feel welcome as a spaniard, and even worse if you are original from Valencia with Madrid ancestors. ( they want to take over Valencia as part of their "catalan empire" and are always fighting against Madrid).

I’ve lived in Barcelona for a month and to be honest I didn’t enjoy it that much. I’m actually planning on moving to Valencia soon and your video strengthens my opinion even more, it seems like the perfect place to be. Thank you! :)

I agree with you 100%. Barcelona is not only a real city but a cosmopolitan city, unique in its own right. And if you add all the connectivity it has with other major European cities uff for me it’s unbeatable in Spain. The border with France is just two hours by car. I mean, when it comes to Cosmopolitan cities in Europe, Barcelona in my books is very well ranked. PS: I’m not Catalonian nor Spaniard but an expat living in Barcelona for over 5 years.
