Which city is the BEST city for expats?
I know a lot of you want to live in a different country and are trying to make the right choice. Every place has its pros and cons but in todays video I will give you my honest opinion on the top 2 cities, Lisbon and Valencia.
Spain and Portugal have been desired destinations for tourists and expats for some time now.
Both cities are very similar when it comes to weather, cost and lifestyle.
Lisbon is a very old city so there is a lot to see. From the main landmarks to some residential parts of town where things look as if time has stopped. The experience is truly authentic.
There is a big expat community here in Lisbon. English is widely spoken pretty much everywhere. The government and people seem to be more forward-thinking and more efficient. In my opinion also the food is better in Lisbon, more international. A lot healthier non-fried options.
Valencia is more flat with better transportation more walkable. There are more grocery stores available almost everywhere in the city. Warmer, sunnier vibe vs darker more moody in Lisbon.
For me Valencia is a better city when it comes to quality of life. People here are very warm and kind. There is a sense of positivity in Valencia compared to a little darker moodier vibe in Lisbon.

I am moving to Valencia this year from South Lake Tahoe, CA. I have been watching your videos and they have been very helpful to me in making my decision on where to retire. I also considered Porto and Lisbon but decided on Valencia mostly because of the wide open spaces, parks and lack of hilly, paved streets. I have 2 dogs and plan to walk and bike a lot. Thank you for posting these great videos!!! Maybe will see you out and about in Valencia! Ellen

Paz tenga. No sé si me expliqué bien. Los vídeo de usted son pedagógicos e interesantes. Gracias!

I adore Valencia. When I went there, I thought that it would be the best city in Spain to live in; large enough to have what I want including job opportunities but not too large (so still compact and easy to travel by car, walking and metro), not as expensive as Madrid and Barcelona, a better climate than Madrid, Barcelona and Sevilla due to its location, close to beaches and mountains etc. In terms of Portugal, I much preferred Porto over Lisbon, though Lisbon is a lot larger and so probably is better for job opportunities.

I am Portuguese, I worked in Portugal for some time in a company based in Valencia, with Spanish colleagues from Valencia and Seville and during that period I went to Valencia several times. As a Portuguese I found Valencians much friendlier and more cosmopolitan than Seville, especially in relation to the Portuguese 😜. I loved the tapas experience in Valencia, undoubtedly a city with more open spaces than Lisbon, wider, airier avenues, a city with a lot of modernity (Lisbon has it too, but in a different way). As a Portuguese, what I missed most in the Valencia area is the green of Portugal, the waves, the refreshing wind and the cooler sea waters. In Valencia when it's hot there is no Atlantic breeze like in Lisbon and you can't cool off at sea, otherwise the comparison is smart, they are cities that are very similar in size and population, the almost deserted airport in Valencia and Lisbon are also very strange, Lisbon airport it is always fool of people.

I love Spain and try to cross the border and travel through Spain as much as I can. What I like about Portugal is (1) that for people from an Anglo-Saxon culture eating times are similar; (2) all foreign programs on the television and most of the movies at the cinema are not dubbed but have subtitles; and (3) most large shops, supermarkets, and shopping centers are open on holidays and Sundays, making shopping on those days easy. One thing I don't like about Portugal is that if you want to drive on a good road, you have to pay. In Spain a large part of the country has excellent four-lane highways, called autovias, that are free to use. Of course there are also toll roads, called autopistas, but you can easily avoid them by taking a national highway, which is usually excellent. In Portugal that is not the case. Spain also has a well-developed train system that connects almost all the major cities in the country. In Portugal there is basically only one modern train line, that which links Porto and Lisbon. I have been to Valencia several times and I enjoyed the city. Since I am a small city person it would be hard for me to adapt to either Valencia or Lisbon. Such is life.
@joselopez-yf9jq
@joselopez-yf9jq Жыл бұрын
The current government already has plans to pay for road use between 2023 and 2024. If you are not used to such a big city, try smaller cities (Alicante, Murcia, etc). Movie theaters in the original version is not common but not impossible , it 's just a matter of knowing where or when , in my city from Monday to Thursday they have movies without dubbing . It's all a matter of searching and accommodating yourself to what is best for you. PD: Sorry for my poor english .

I´m just curious if you are native in English because of your accent, About valencia, I need to visit, but I can share my experience about living in Lisbon, the city is beautiful all year long, in the summer is crowded with tourists but this didn´t bother me, the only time in the year that is hard to walk in the streets in July (some days are too hot), the rest of the year the weather is really nice. Portuguese people are closed, but once you know them they are nice and honest (sometimes too honest, for example, if you see two candies in a bakery and ask which is better the attendant probably will answer I don´t know you are the one who will be eating). Food is good, supermarkets have a good variety of fresh fruits vegetables and meat, In fact here in Portugal, many will speak at least English as a second language, and probably are capable to understand Spanish and many will know some French and German. Since the country is small with few opportunities for work many end up immigrating to other EU countries this created this culture to learn another language, just to state a fact Portuguese is the 6 most spoken language in the world.

I have been to both, spent approximately 3 weeks in each city, so I cannot be considered an ex-pat by any definition. But I would prefer Lisbon because English is more widely spoken. I lived in Barcelona and that is the only city in Spain where English is widely spoken. Now, Lisbon is relatively inexpensive to eat out vs Spain. The Portuguese are in my opinion friendlier as well. But truth be told I love both Spain and Portugal. Also, it's a good thing you don't live in Los Angeles, where I live. You would hate it.

Interesting vid, Antoanetta, that I mostly agree with. The only thing that made my ears real hot, was saying Portuguese food is "better". If you Google "best cuisines in the world", or any variation of those terms, you´ll find Spanish cuisine is usually ranked in the Top 5 in the World; Top 10, at worst. Italy, Spain, France, maybe Greece... But give me any REPUTABLE link where Portuguese cuisine is even considered in the Top 10, and I´ll buy whatever you wish from your jewelery collection, without Britney´s budget... ;D All kidding aside, Portugal is a good country for food, sharing with Spain the quality of its fresh products. But it´s also a much, much smaller country, with far less cultural differences, and therefore a much, much more limited cuisine than Spain has. Anyway, good to see you´re having a great time in Spain. I´m enjoying your videos. Best!

What a great comment thank you 😊 Yes, and remember it’s all subjective. I was impressed with their international cuisine. As far as Spain I still have not been to the Basque region and want to try the food there SO badly 😋

@@ANTOANETTA No, thanks to you, for sharing such a great content. And yes, everything is subjective. Even though subjective was obviously never meant to be a synonym of objective, as I tried to convey before. So not to try to bust your female balls, but let me try to dissect what, IMHO, "impressed with their international cuisine" actually means; which is the fact that for someone coming from the US of A, as it is from people coming from the UK, Germany... or in other words, countries whose local cuisines are so utterty unremarkable, you guys are the ones used to order "international cuisines" such as Mexican, Italian, Thai, Chinese, Japanese... because the local ones, don´t cut it. But in Spain, it´s quite the opposite: since the quality of Spanish food is pretty great, most Spaniards just order foreign food whenever we feel like tasting something "exotic", so to speak, which has nothing to do to the food quality... And yes, Basque Country is great. To the point is has the most Michelin stars restaurants in the world, by population. The point being eating in San Sebastian, Madrid, Santiago, Leon, Sevilla..., and so many others, it´s still a glorious gastronomical experience, most countries in the world would envy. Including Portugal... ;) Best!

Is hard and unfair to compared both countries. If you compare size, population, diversity, development, Portugal will lose. Moving to a new country will depend on personal preferences, so you may like Spain or Portugal and both are valid, there's no wrong or right option.

Of course it's different stokes for different folks, but I thought the food in Spain (variety of tapas at least) was way better than the largely fried, cheap cuts of pork and potatoes we found in Portugal. Not that long ago,, Portugal was a pretty poor country and I think that's reflected in their rather simple, traditional dishes. That said, the food in Porto was way better than Lisbon.

I've been to both cities and I would say this (in an agreement with the video, generally): Lisbon beats Valencia 10 to 3 in terms of general tourist attractiveness and sightseen. I totally love Lisbon. Lisbon is WAY more interesting for tourism imho. BUT. Valencia certainly beats Lisbon in terms of the comfort of living, especially if you have kids. In Valencia, you can go with a baby cart anywhere. In Lisbon, it is close to impossible to go with a baby cart at all. You just have to carry your children in your hands; there is no other option in most central districts (because of paving stones everywhere and crazy hills, and because of narrow passages in most central areas). Valencia is simpler as a city, but simplicity is exactly what makes it more comfortable: it is plain, it is without nice but uncomfortable paving stones, and it is just simpler for logistics.

Antoanetta do you had being in Asturias ?? because I have to tell you that there I ate a wonderful seafood , for me the best you can get in Spain and the meat if you like meat the same for me the best and the wine also very good . I know is not as warm like Valencia but their beaches also for me the best I ever experience , and if you are for an aventura that is your place , the beauty of their beaches are incredible , now if you like warm water then you will have to get the right moment to go inside the beaches , august for me is a good one . If you had not being there , I will yell you to try it , explore Asturias , when I did it I decided that there is my place to retire .

Why can't they just do a rotating schedule?! This is such an annoyance I agree Antonetta, those late dinner hours (so unhealthy!) & weekends with everything closed on weekends :( I know those are traditions and they do not have to yield to change for the likes of us. But we can still voice our annoyance lol.

Are you serious? Spanish and portuguese are very similar, Sisters language, just learn Portuguese and understand both or Spanish, any portuguese understand Spanish and can talk a little, it's similar and you can then learn the other or understand the other or even a little of Italian, automatically. Same family Languages (Portuguese, Spanish, Italian) and a little of French. You learn one, you understand a little of others.

It might make more sense to compare Lisbon with Barcelona, a similarly cosmopolitan city with more tourism, expats, English speakers, old claustrophobic neighborhoods, etc. As for the “heaviness” of Lisbon, maybe that can be explained by the Portuguese concept of saudade? It is part of the culture, and definitely not going away with the end of the pandemic. It’s beautiful (IMHO) and Lisbon would not be the same without it.

Sure.. the reason I am comparing Valencia to Lisbon is because they were on top of the best cities to live on the expat list 😊 The moodiness is Lisbon gives it an artistic feel… again it all depends what you are looking for. Thank you for watching! Always 🤩

I am in Valenica now....Havent been to Lisbon yet, but I will say at first I liked Valencia at first. It seemed nice and a fun cullture, transportation systems seemed amazing, drivers are repsectable of pedestrians, cost of living is a bit high compared to other cities which I will mention. However after being here for 2 weeeks I have fallen out of love with Spain entirely. The Siesta crap like you mentioned is very annoying. Its difficult to dertermine if and when they have food. Sometimes you will see something on the menu and they dont even have anymore available. Customer Service is very poor its literally non-existant! The language barrier is terrible for a country that depends on toursim. Literally the only language spoken is Spanish. Wouldnt you think if your country was built on tourism you should at least know another language to serve tourists lol. You would think they would say ok where are these tourists coming from which mostly is from the UK and America right? What language do they countries speak? Oh yeah......ENGLISH! So you probably should know English to serve your tourists lol. So even though I speak some Spanish its literally impossible to build any kind of relationship with Spanish people unless you speak FLUENT Spanish. So unless you are fluent in Spanish it will feel like you a foreigner and be difficult to make friends and fit in with the culture here. You will also feel like Spaniards are lazy because businesses are often closed and a challenge to get even basic things done. You have to build your life around their hours. Also I will say and another one of my friends that came here said the same thing the Spanish people have an arrogance about them they carry themselves like only they matter and it shows in their customer service, their limited working hours, and they fact they do not whatsoever accomodate tourists here. Its beautiful yes, the architecture in the city center is amazing, its clean, and the beach is lovely, and great weather, but besides this its a difficult country to feel connected to the communty! Also very few cinemas here have English verions so all movies in Spanish makes this annoying if you want to have a night out at the movies! Another major issue I had was last night their entire transportation system failed the city bus didnt even show up and a bunch of us including the Spaniards were waiting for the bus for over an hour! The bus never showed up so everyone just left the bus stop and then worst of all I tried to call a Taxi none of them answered or were closed. The couple taxi places that did answer only spoke Spanish and when I tried to speak Slowly and explain I needed a Taxi he just hung up the phone on me. I could not get any help I tried to go in restaurants looking for help nobody spoke English. I was stuck and had to walk miles and miles back to my hotel. This is a major failure of Spain they have all these transportation options, but you couldnt get help when you needed it like many other things here. So for me Spain is not a place to live. To visit yes! To live NO! The other country I visted that so far is a much better cost of living, more beautiful and better customer service as well as transportation that actually works, Cinemas have all movies in English is Turkey. So far this beats Spain!
