WHERE TO MAKE YOUR ZERO TURN?! [LET'S SETTLE THE DEBATE!]

Today Rob and I are taking a quick second to demonstrate the difference between turning on the lawn, and turning on a sidewalk. Yes there are pro's and cons to both, so help me settle the debate!
When turning on the lawn, you cover your tracks but unfortunately still add stress to the lawn when you turn. When you turn on the sidewalk, you don't tear up the lawn, but you end up tracking on the sidewalk or driveway.
Where do you guys do your"K turn", in the lawn, or on the sidewalk? Let's settle the debate once and for all!
PS, don't forget to comment down below the phrase that pays ;)

Hi Brian great topic. I'm currently in my 22nd season mowing professionally. I train my guys to stay off driveways and sidewalks. Especially concrete! The stains look awful. Other reasons are to avoid broken windows. As far as tearing the grass is concerned I'm kind of stickler on learning to turn without tearing. Employees will roll their eyes but im out there with them to teach them and I feel it's worth it.

Hey Brian. I bag most of my properties so I feel like its better to edge/weedeat and then mow. That way it picks up the clippings that the weedeater leaves. I do agree that it depends on the property and weather for which way you turn around. Great video as always!

I’m just a homeowner but I’ve been edging second lately. That way I can see the blades of grass that the mower won’t reach and not have to spend more time with the trimmer than I need too. When I trim first I always seem to waste time cutting grass with the trimmer that would be faster to do with the mower. Although, sometimes my wife wants to do the mower and those times I get out first with the trimmer, quickly knock it out, and get the heck out of her way 😮

I do both, sometimes you have to turn on the pavement, but mainly I keep it in the lawn, because driving the mower off crushes the edges of the lawn-- which segues into the edging topic: again, the mower can also crush a nice fresh edge, whereas edging afterward leaves the product way more crisp.

One thing you didn't mention but you do is if you are operating your zero turn correctly all tires are always moving on a turn and therefore less chance of tearing up the yard or marking the concrete. Like sitting in your car stopped and just turning the wheel is going to leave marks instead of only turning wheel while moving.

Hi. I own a small lawn care business. It is a case by case play; if I can turn around on the road or sidewalk and it not look bad I prefer that. If there is a sidewalk and easement, I like to turn around in the grass nearest the road between the sidewalk and grass and then do a perimeter pass to clean up. Perimeter pass and outlines either way. 7/10 times turn around in the grass and 7/10 times edge first . I edge first especially on overgrown properties for sure. Sweater weather is the best weather. Love the content and appreciate you and your enthusiasm and dedication to your craft and this business.

In turn on my drive and street, on one side and bottom; the top and other side on grass. All a matter of lawn and neighbor borders too. always do two passes wide on perimeter, this keeps clipping from blowing into others yard when I turn in grass. Sweater Weather, I would prefer to turn on the lawn. However I have some properties including mine, where the sidewalk is above the grass line. The grass slopes away from the sidewalk. If you make a perimeter cut, the angle of the deck leaves a line, then as you turn you can definitely see the turn around deck marks. In both of this properties I ride over the sidewalk. No swirl marks or angeled lines. I do worry about the wear on the sidewalk over years of cutting. Time will tell. Really enjoy your videos, obvious experience has taught you well!

It all depends Bri! On a hot/dry day, you can tire skid the pavement or even crack it (depending on what kind and thickness of pavement is. If its wet grass, turn on the grass so you don't grass streak the cement/asphalt pavement unless you have no other option just do it slowly so you don't tear up the lawn. If the edge of the lawn is hilly, stopping/turning on the grass may not be ideal cause you skid and tear up the grass (wet or dry). Like you said, maybe their is no pavement/driveway so grass it is. I say do what works for you, just be smart about it and take your timer cause when you rush, you always JACK something up!

I generally turn on the lawn (Canada Here) but compared to your other video you posted recently I face my chute facing into the lawn instead of out. I edge first then cut second, my thought process was always that edging first lets me cut the longer grass clippings into the lawn to match that sometimes show up. I find if I edge after cutting there will be uneven clippings on the lawn. The only time i edge second is if im about to get rained or poured on.

Another reason you edge second is because mowing is the #1 priority when arriving to a property. Not trimming, not edging etc.. if there’s only one thing you had to pick it would be mowing. Having said that there have been days where the rain caught us heavy and we were already backed up. We decided that week of the route and only 2-3 hours before rainfall that the only possible way to finish the route is to only mow and blow the houses and continue the regular routine the next day

The more I mow (just at my house, not a professional) I am starting to try to do less turns on the sidewalk due to "grinding" the grass into the concrete. I find I don't rip up the grass when turning on the grass if it isn't super wet and I keep both wheels moving. If I try a real zero turn then it rips up a little. I always trim first, but think that is just how I was hard wired, never thought about why other than breaking up and taller clippings with the mower. And lastly, sweater weather... love this time of year.

In regards to edging I typically Edge, mow, string trim. If the dirt is real bad I may hit it real quick with the blower before I mow. I never really thought about mud getting on the tires from edging but those were some great reasons to edge after the mow. My reasoning for edging before was if I bag I can suck up the clumps and dirt from the edge. Lately many that I Edge I have been mulching instead of bagging. I might have to try out edging afterwards to see how it goes.

I vote edge second when you have a zero turn mower. I think it helps your edges look crisper after you mow and the mower might push the grass blades down. If you are a homeowner with a push mower it doesn’t matter because the mower doesn’t push your grass down as much as a zero turn.

For edging, both answers are correct, and they have to deal with current weather conditions. Adapt and overcome. Dry days, Edge first. Wet days, Edge after mowing. A good Stihl or RedMax blower, and a landscaper who pays attention to detail of the edge line takes care of the rest.

Make a 3 point type of turn! I have also noticed that on some of my properties that if we edge before we mow the mower will mess up the edge as you roll onto the sidewalk/street! It really depends on what lines you're hitting, and the property! Both of these subjects the owner should make an educated decision👍🏼👍🏼

I’m Florida we always had someone edging and someone mowing at the same time to start off then trim and blow. I don’t recall our edges getting too messed up with doing that order. Also turned mostly on grass but wherever was easiest or made sense. But we also didn’t stripe in Florida so the turning was different. As long as you weren’t flying and don’t crazy sharp turns the grass was usually ok. Definitely had problems leaving tire marks on driveways and smeared grass cause the grass grew so tall and thick there and it was always wet from raining a lot

We try to stay completely off the edge with the mower it mashes the edge down and doesn’t look as crisp so turn in grass. As far as when it is edged we have one guy edging and one guy mowing from the start. Blow the edge clippings back in the gras and mulch if you need to. It ain’t sweater weather in Texas

I do both. Just depends on how I feel that day. Usually mow first though.

Depends on the property but usually I always turn on the grass. If I’m mowing weekly and the grass is short, I edge second. If the grass is long, I’ll edge first so the mower can pick up the clippings.

Also edge second. It's the best way to get a true edge on the grass when serviced.

My first 2 passes is a circle around the perimeter blowing the clippings in towards the middle. Then I turn around and blow all clippings out. The reason why is that the less I remow the clippings the less wear and tear on my machine, plus fuel savings because my machine is not working as hard to cut the extra grass.

I'd say it really depends on the property an if the grass is wet or dry. Also if the grass is dry you can make your turn around on the drive way or sidewalk keeping your lines straight an if you turn to the right it'll blow the clippings back onto the lawn

It can depend on the property and how damp the turf is. If the turf is less than ideal, turning on concrete can minimise any damage. Unless your tires are dirty from mud or wet grass; Concrete is easily cleaned up with the blower afterwards with no lasting damage.

This goes back to yesterday's video but I reverse into the next stripe depending on which way I'm mowing the lawn, to keep that much more of the grass off the driveway, flower beds, side walk, etc. Also, I edge after I mow just because.

Edging first unless it’s wet grass down south we’re usually dry. If it’s wet, I edge last to avoid mud tracks.
