Are you kidding? I love the look of the back of an upright piano.

hey robert, i put my old Mason and Risch upright in the middle of my room overlooking the escarpment view on my 16th floor apartment. the resonence is so much better than against the wall. also no carpet underneath

Can i put woolen carpet behind the piano instead of velvet, and will radiator behind the piano make problems?

what about an air intake ~ not heat/air conditioning register but the fresh air intake?

I'd also suggest not putting it against an outside wall or over an HVAC vent. What about putting it across a corner, if the room is large enough? In the reed organ world, they made what they called 'chapel models', which were low-top instruments that had the back finished to allow it to be placed with the back towards the congregation so that the organist could look over the top and be able to see the choir director, the minister, or generally what was going on in the service. Do any upright manufacturers do the same?

Food for thought you could also try a corner and angle it

I would like mine away from the wall. What type of material is best for covering the back & how much distance. Also I have it on carpet right now. How would be propping it up on a few 2x4s elevating it a few inches about the carpet?
@harrisonrichter941410 жыл бұрын
I would refrain from it, simply from the possibility of it tipping over if the 2x4s slip. A good material is like a red felt material, or velvet.

look for acoustically transparent fabrics

you should not elevate it too much. The use of the pedals would become awkward. But there are some rubber/tree/plastic bases you can put under the wheels.
@brucealanwilson41216 жыл бұрын
You could lay a sheet of plywood over the carpet and then put the piano on that.

I find the common practice of putting an upright piano wedged up against a wall very sad. The sound comes out of the back, so...it should face the room. Just catecorner it a little, facing outwards, and the playing experience is infinitely better. Feels more like you're playing into the room instead of into the drywall...because you are. Plus, this is how a piano bar is set up. How lame is it when the pianist is facing a corner?! Lol

i agree. set it up like a grand piano in a room. remove the kick panel as well, and it will sound amazing

what are the handles on the back of pianos called and what happens if they are loose

Hi, Robert. I like your channel so much. A question: I wonder, when the first tuning must do in a new upright piano?
@pudgylumpkins7 жыл бұрын
Wait a month or so after delivery before you get the piano tuned. The movement will mess with the tuning and then the piano is going to adjust over time to the temp and humidity of your home. After it has adjusted you can begin regular tuning.

can a room really screw up a an upright piano? i used to have a ydp103 digital, now i got a brand new Yamaha U1 in a small living room , I'm not sure if its the tuning or the room, but people say they prefer the digital and honestly i enjoy it more , I'm positive it can be tuned better but can the digital ever be better the an upright?

I dont know if you find you answers but, from my experiences: - A room/ piano placement can fuck up the sound of a great piano - Have enough objects in the room so the sound resonates well (it wil give a studio feeling instead of a sharp church sound) - Control the volume of your piano by the distance with the wall - Digital keyboard players tend to play too loud on an acoustic piano - The people propably got used to the sound of your digital piano, as they here the rich voluminous acoutic, they identify it as 'too much', but this is how real instruments sound, we all got used to more poor digital sounds in music. - Yamaha's have an agressive sound, making it more easy to express feelings, but sometimes harder to fit in the music piece. I love yamaha U's for that reason. this is all subjective in some way.
@benjaminsmith22876 жыл бұрын
A U1, unlike the myth that most Yamaha's sound the same, can sound very mellow to very strident. It's hard to tell what yours sound like. You may have a more strident one. Try to work with your technician to get the piano "voiced" in a way that you like. A U1 sounds way better than a ydp103. The ydp is sampled on a Yamaha concert grand that was voiced. That's probably what your friends are responding to. But the real resonance of the U1, plus the control you can have over the sound, is much superior to the Arius digital piano. Be patient, work with the tuner or find a tech that voices the instrument. If you can't get it but so mellow, a change of hammers may do the trick. But that's costly.

@@TheWoopi digital dont do it for me, they just dont have the experience of playing a real instument, and i got tired of fiddling around with settings.

Easy - nowhere. Buy a grand. Even if you think your room can't accommodate it, believe me - it most likely can. I have two grand pianos (one of which is 230cm long) in a room about which people claimed it was too small for one baby grand. Don't be afraid of long pianos. BTW, that 230cm piano - a Bösendorfer - cost me exactly 450 euro, and it is in a great condition. From the 1840s, with outstanding sound. Cheers!
