Feedback, you did an amazing job explaining how to get started with coding. You came across as a seasoned professional and kept my attention as you didn't say things like um , you guys etc. I applaud your ability to speak with such confidence about the subject I am a IT web developer, graduated in 2013 from UOP, I have been to countless interviews and always get the message that they like me and think I would fit into the culture well but to be honest they are looking for someone with 3 to 5 yrs experience. When asked if they could suggest how to get that experience, they said volunteer my services! LOL right, I am 67 yrs old, have a mortgage, car payments, insurance and all the other bills to pay each month. I have to work to pay those bills I don't live at home with Mom and Dad. So after a year or so of searching I gave up and went back to the hospitality industry and during that time have designed a few wed sites for friendsl It's been a while since I have done any coding. I think what you have offered would be a great way for me to revisit the skills that I learned in school. Thank you for working so hard to help others realize their dreams!

I was having a conversation with my Dad. I told him I want to get into the IT Field but I don't know where to start. He told me, start somewhere. Your first option may not be the best option, but start somewhere and adjust as you go along. When she said "Stop watching videos", that really hit me and reminded me of my conversation with my Dad. I watched the rest of this video and signed up for the Google IT Support Cert Course via Coursera. For me, it makes sense to begin with the fundamentals of computer science and figure out what field I want to go in from there. The point is, I took both her and Dad's advice, I stopped watching all these videos and started somewhere. I hope to report back in 3-6 months!!

I saved this video for a long time on my PC, didn't watch it but hoping to, because I really hoped to learn to code. Well, I have finally watched the video - by chance. When I saved it, I was confused and not sure. As at toda before watching the video, I am already deep in CS50 and have started building websites after signing up for an eHA Academy course (my motivation sprung up after watching the series SCORPION). What caught my attention in your video is the sincerity, and that everything I'm doing now, are the exact steps you mentioned in the video for us to get started. Cut to the chase rather than watch a bunch of videos, using freecodecamp platform, CS50 and developing genuine interest to understand the fundamentals first. Recently all videos I watch on KZbin are either explaining "transistors" "binary" "logic gates" "memory" or something like that. Makes me wonder if I watched your video before today, I would have had a better head start. But this ultimately reinforced the confidence in me to keep going (CS50 has been very boring, can't lie). When I asked my friends on my IG on what language to start learning, 7 of the 9 people who replied back to me were women. This was REFRESHING because I had no idea they were fluent in specific coding languages because only men ever talk about it. I’ve been learning Python for about a month now. I can read and understand code fairly well, for the most part, but when it’s time for me to practice and produce what I learned it takes me so long to create my own code. Your videos encourage me to keep going. It would be helpful to understand a little more about the career options available after successfully learning a language in full as well as how to actually apply to jobs without a CS degree. What do you put on your resume?

It's the first day of my last summer vacation (I graduate in a year), and I decided to spend this summer learning how to program! When looking up how to program, your video was one of few that actually provided AMAZING information! I actually enrolled in the harvard course and I am really excited! THANK YOU!!!!

Thank you so much for this video. I am a lecture based learning, but I also need hands-on experience to make sure I fully understand the why and how behind a topic. since watching your video I discovered that the Harvard CS50 course is free. I will be starting this alongside other certifications and studying resources. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, Thank you.

Hi, Bukola. I really like your videos. You make computer science seem a lot less daunting. I was reading up on the careers you can join with coding skills. The careers that stood out to me were web designer and web developer. I believe that having a degree would make me stand out in the job market but I am not sure of which degree I should pursue to be a web designer or developer. I am leaning toward a computer science degree or a graphic design degree but I don't want to waste time attaining a degree that is useless in the careers I am interested in. Help, please!

I see a lot of younger people in the comments saying they are wanting to get into software development. DO IT! It is a very valuable and employable skill. I started to learn around age 13, I skipped college basically because I learned how to code before I graduated high school. I guess it really comes at a cost though, I spent a lot of my time as a teenager inside learning how to code so I missed out on some teenage experiences but comparing that to being able to skip college + having a job that allows me to be completely independent compared to most young adults my age (~22y/o). I wouldn't trade it for the world. Most people stop learning because they don't apply it to anything that they are interested in. Me, I learned how to program so I could make my own cheats for video games. For some of you it could be making a game, a website, etc. Just keep trying. My personal tips: -Learn the fundamentals of "object oriented programming" first before you start worrying about syntax. If you understand the core principles of OOP, then it will make learning multiple different languages very easy. -Learn how to read bad/old code. If you are wanting a job in software dev, there's a 99.9% chance you'll be working on code someone else wrote a long time ago. Learn how to read and understand code that might not be written in the best way. This will make your life 100x easier. -Learn how to debug software. Debugging is going to be about 50-70% of your job. It's best to know how to debug properly. -Learn some type of SQL. Almost every professional application uses a database layer of some kind. SQL is the language you use to interact with a database, and knowing how to do even simple things like SELECTING, UPDATING, DELETING, etc. will help you out later on.
