Batman Year One is the perfect comic to read for first time batman comic readers. If you enjoy that, move on to The long Halloween....Dark Victory....then The dark knight returns. All those are connected so it is the same batman throughout those comics.

For new readers who already have an idea from the general cultural zeitgeist, Mun would actually recommend Batman: Hush. It is pretty self contained with its own standalone villain and storyline, while also giving pretty much an entire tour of the Batman universe. We run through enemies, allies, side characters, all getting at least some introductional narration from bats. It's made so you can understand what's going on even if it's pretty much your first comic. Mun believes it to be the best spot to just jump right in.

I'm 19, and I've probably been a Batman fan since I was 9 or so. My entry point was definitely Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, all of the many DC animated movies, and the Arkham Games. However, I always feel kind of insecure about calling myself a fan since, from middle school to today, I've only read Batman: Under The Red Hood, Batman: Hush, the first four years of the Injustice comics (if you want to count those), the first volume of the New 52 Court of Owls storyline (I bought it thinking it was the full comic), Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth, and The Dark Knight Returns. I also currently own The Killing Joke, but I'm waiting until I finish another book to start reading it. Comics that are definitely high on my list of priorities would be Year One and Long Halloween. I've also obviously consumed a ton of other Batman related media, but in terms of comics, I could count them on two hands. I've been saying for years that I'd love to get into reading comics and, to be honest, I don't think I'll ever be a month to month reader. But, I'd love to read just enough to not consider myself a complete poser. Edit: Oh, and I've also read the first 7or 9 issues of the Arkham Knight prequel comics which I actually did read month to month until I gave up.

I would actually recommend not reading TDKR to start off, because while it is a really good story, it is a deconstruction of who Batman is, so it isn't as effective to someone who doesn't understand the core of Batman yet.
@hughjass77774 жыл бұрын
I would assume that's why you read Year 1 first since that fully establishes a lot of what Batman is about. Though most people can also understand deconstruction too without having a huge background. Plenty of first year comic readers still appreciate and love Watchmen for example

I say the same thing about Killing Joke. If you’re going to start with any deconstruction book, make it Year One because it’s actually the start of post Crisis continuity anyway so it’s a great jumping on point

@marlin21314 жыл бұрын
Grantimus Prime imo, crisis on infinite earths is a lot of fun but it’s super complicated and the story behind isn’t all that great. If you have a good knowledge of Batman and want to expand out into the wider universe I would recommend the first run of New 52 Justice League comics (would have to check but pretty sure it’s mostly Snyder/Lee) as they are great for learning more about each member and it’s perfect for the way the group slowly expands outwards and you get to meet the wider universe supporting characters while also gaining good understanding of the core teams’ relationships with eachother. If you can track down the original copies too they include some other great titles like the Shazam origin, JLA and Justice League Dark, but if you aren’t interested in the current continuity then i seriously recommend the stuff that comes immediately before it. The Green Lantern stories Blackest Night and then Brightest Day are an excellent short history of the core universe (Blackest Night is more famous but i personally prefer Brightest Day). Once you have a good idea of those characters, Flashpoint is a really great AU to explore them in a new light and just a great story all-together
@marlin21314 жыл бұрын

I think as an alternative to this video, you should do one where it’s a showcase of where to start with looking into the character of The Joker, who is actually my personal favorite character in comic book history, and I believe he has the greatest and most unique character dynamic with a hero I have ever seen (even more than any of Spider-Man’s rogues gallery). And if you want, you can pair him with introducing The Batman Who Laughs if you bring up his series within the Dark Knight’s Metal continuity. P.S. I just got started on the Scott Snyder New 52 books and I like it so far, but I have yet to see what horrible terrors Joker does to the Batfamily when I read Death of the Family (yes I know he starts cutting faces off).

first off I wouldn't let anyone quantify what a true fan is for you. For example I have not read any comics in the last year. I'm still a fan of the character, but I think that the quality was really falling off for a while and I'm taking a break. there's plenty of ways to keep up with it but one that's actually underrated is checking out the library. Another alternative to the comics I'd recommend (and I know I'm definitely not the first to say this but screw it) is Batman the Animated Series. It's where Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill got their start before the Arkham Games and is considered by many to be the definitive Batman. Only thing is it doesn't go into his origins too much though his character is introduced and portrayed perfectly without you really needing to know the details of how he got there. Plus all the episodes are stand alone stories so you can watch in almost any order you want.

@bradenhogan24 жыл бұрын
It really depends on what you like and why you’re interested in reading Batman. I definitely would not recommend Killing Joke first. I know it’s on everyone’s required reading list for Batman, but I really think you need to start with something that isn’t that deep into the deconstruction genre. It’s important to know WHAT they’re deconstructing. It’s like trying to get into a tv show and starting with the series finale. But a good deconstruction book to start on would be Year One if someone wants Batman because he’s gritty and street level and realistic. If you want a good noir detective story, The Long Halloween/Dark Victory is great. If you just like that Batman has such a great and large supporting cast, Hush is good for that. If you love the animated series, start with ‘70s Denny O’Neil (RIP) and Neal Adams Batman. If you like the “Batgod” (he can do anything because he’s Batman), read some Grant Morrison stuff. Court of Owls is a good one for a Batman who has been beaten down and has to exercise all his resolve to survive a situation. Also, movies are not comics, and neither are cartoons or video games. Comic is not a genre, it is an art form. The Dark Knight Returns is a pretty faithful adaptation, yes, but that only begs the question of why even do it? If it’s so close to the comic, why not just read the comic? If it were made to be viewed as a cartoon then Frank Miller would have pitched it as a cartoon. Same with Year One and Hush and any other direct adaptation. If you don’t care about comics and you just want a superhero cartoon or movie, sure check those things out. If you’re trying to get into reading comics, then just read the comic. Believe me, the art is better, you’re going to get more detail and more of the story, and by the end you’ll be grateful you didn’t first consume these stories through a mediator who was cashing a check rather than having that connection to the original creators who had the ideas that meant something to them
@robbyk70704 жыл бұрын
I think the point of the adaptations though was also for people who have reading difficulties or maybe are not as into reading but want to experience a character like was said. There's a weird gatekeeping in the superhero community between adaptations and original works.
@bradenhogan24 жыл бұрын
I’m not directing it to people who don’t read. I’m assuming the video called “Where To Start Reading Batman Comics” is probably going to attract a) people who are interested in reading comics or b) people who already read comics. It’s not gatekeeping to say that the comic is better so if you don’t have a strong aversion to reading then definitely go for the comic. And even then that’s not universal. An exception is Under the Red Hood. The adaptation was written by the same creator and the second chance turned out to be productive and it’s one of the better DC animated projects. It’s one of the few adaptations I’d recommend over the original. But the main point I was trying to make is that cartoons aren’t comics. It’s an art form and it deserves to be respected as such. Just as animation is it’s own art form and should be treated as such. There’s not really an “animation” genre in movies or in comics, nor is there a “movie” genre in animation or comics. If comics can only be viewed in relation to film, then all they are is pictures that don’t move.
@dabossman56504 жыл бұрын
Can you give me some Grant Marrison Stuff?
@bradenhogan24 жыл бұрын
@@dabossman5650 I would recommend JLA by Grant Morrison. I know it’s not a “Batman” book and unfortunately it’s tied to a time in the comics where Superman has a mullet and then turns into a weird blue version, but this is where the concept of Batman being a man among gods really picked up steam. If you’ve seen anything with JL and Batman in the last 20 years from Injustice to cartoons/movies to Lego Batman, I guarantee you Grant Morrison was an influence on it. If you wanted something Grant Morrison that’s more bat-centric and isn’t tied to continuity, Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth is a decent horror book

It's incorrect to say that Batman: Year One is not in continuity. As of Rebirth, the post-crisis stories are now canon again. New 52 is also in canon though. Early on in Rebirth there was weirdness with Batman referencing Year One and Detective Comics referencing Year Zero which, obviously, can't have both happened. But given that Batman and Detective are both canon and they both reference one of those stories... They're both canon. What you have to understand about continuity if you're trying to read modern DC is this; Something either is or is not canon entirely dependent upon whether or not the writer wants it to be and, as a result, you have to constantly be prepared to shift your frames of reference and accept that there will be no overarching coherence. Many people reference Dark Knight Returns as being something for new readers to look at and I wonder sometimes how much damage that's done to the popularity of Batman with the sheer volume of potential new fans who'll have been turned off by it. The style of Dark Knight Returns is completely different from what people who have seen movies or TV shows or played the games will expect from Batman, meaning it won't necessarily actually resonate with people who liked those, which is compounded by the fact that it's also not similar to the style of the majority of the comics, which in many cases would appeal to someone who'd enjoyed Batman in other media. There's a similar issue with recommending Scott Snyder's run (even if you're prepared to overlook that Snyder is exceptionally formulaic and takes a paragraph to say what could be said in a sentence without having a poetic quality to his language to make up for it); By the time you have Jim Gordon in a mech suit fighting an undead corpse re-animated by a "super power seed" who's trying to create a massive black hole in Gotham while Batman's lost his memory because he's been reincarnated by the substance which has made Joker immortal all along... It's just absolutely bizarre and bears no resemblance whatsoever to what people who are looking to get into it based on liking what they've seen in other media are going to be looking for.
@matsmagnussen4 жыл бұрын
This is so well written and true in many ways. I wouldn’t have recommended any of these except for Year One. Then one would go into The Long Halloween and Dark Victory. After those stories you could really read whatever you want, but most people are just in love with the character by then and would just read anything they can get their hands on (atleast I did).

I have not seen it yet, but there's actually a five hour version of The Dark Knight Returns on Amazon Prime. I don't know if it's only available on there.

Hey jay just some feedback I think you should explain what comics are apart of each continuity because ik when I was confused it was hard to follow which stories connected
