I saw an interesting interview with several of the original cast, around the time the new movie was coming out, and they had a variety of viewpoints on it.. one, I forget which, was under the impression the comics had always been goofy lighthearted fare, and another (I wanna say Gorshwin) was aware they had a lot heavier themes in the 40s. But in general they were confused old people wondering why we needed a new thing that was so different, and that's a mood I can sympathize with. Still, it's much worse being a 90s kid, seeing kiddification overturned, seeing deep serious stories presented, and then.... janet jackson flashes a pasty and it all reverts to cheap garbage, and never comes back.

Adam West's portrayal of Batman in the 1960's is certainly a classic - but it's not the "oldest" version of the character set to film. There was a low budget serial made in the 1940s or early 1950s.

@Ricky Moore true but the title says THE OLDEST BATMAN, adam west clearly isn't the oldest, simple as that we know what they are going for, of course, but the title is incorrect and clearly everyone is picking up on it , you can't debate this point, Adam west simply isn't the oldest batman it was Lewis Wilson maybe they should have put Oldest and Most popular vs Newest and Most popular then.. it'd make more sense

It's not that no in-between works, but trying to combine tones is a challenge not always met. I'd say "The Brave and the Bold", which was mostly silly, had some serious moments that really worked, and inversely, Batman: The Animated Series, which was mostly serious, had some silly episodes that really worked. "Gotham" is a curious case of...the writing is so bad it's good, but everything else from casting to production design is unironically excellent. I'd say that show, in all its strange combination of competence and incompetence, manages to make a tone that combines the silly and the serious work really well, even in spite of writing that...kind of doesn't. I really don't think it has to be one or the other, but combining them in a way that works is not necessarily easy.

Yeah, it's a symptom of how dumbed-down we got as a culture, with everyone having the taste of an eleven-year old boy; the very hip, multi-level 60s Batman goes over their head.. Every Batman movie has been lame because every Batman the've had ever since has been lame (though not the Bruce Waynes). The costumes look ridiculous and overdesigned, the Batmobiles suck, the Batcaves suck, the action sequences suck. Adam West is the only Batman who IS Batman; the others are all actors moonlighting as Batman. Michael Keaton was atrocious as Batman. And what the hell is it with all of them doing that fake Clint Eastwood voice when they're in the Batman suit? I tried re-watching "The Dark Knight" recently and I burst out laughing at the sight of Gary Oldman acting his ass off, looking up and seeing a dude in a Batman suit standing there. To be honest Adam West, writers, crew, etc were mostly having an amazing time doing the original. They originally signed on to do a show for kids that was so “bad” that it would never continue; but then it became a hit…and with all sorts of age demographics. So when they got higher ratings budgets they just started adding more guests, more camp, pushing the limits on jokes and situational boundaries; and they kept getting asked for more. For them, it was like getting asked to run around and get paid loads of money for playing a massive lowest effort joke with the world; and getting continued applause for it.

I'm so happy that Adam West's portrayal of Batman is finally getting the recognition it deserves. I've watched through most of the 60s series, and it actually does have that grit factor in some episodes. literally the first episode of the series the villain's hench-girl gets killed in the Batcave by falling into a power generator. and even in the goofier episodes, Adam West, and certainly even the amazing actors that played opposite him as the villains, all play it with a level of commitment I don't think any other incarnation of Batman or his foes has. I have always maintained that Adam West was the best Batman, and videos like this bolster my courage in giving that answer. didn't mean for this comment to turn into a paragraph, but thanks guys for shining light on one of the best comic book adaptations ever made (in my humble opinion).

I swear, Batman as a character will live through so many legendary iterations. For the character to be almost 100 years old is insane.

18:27 I honestly think that it was more terrifying to add a goofy/comedy character to a serious movie because of his unserious expressions, kinda like Pennywise
