My setup nowadays is pretty good but I started with a controller and believe it or not, Wreckfest. I think it's a very underrated racing game the physics are pretty good the racing is better than advertised. It's dirt to pavement transitions are better than a lot of sims. It's a lot of fun that teaches you the basics very well and you will become a Jedi master of collision avoidance😂 I still use the skills that I learned in wreckfest in the iRacing type Sims I play today.

Another great video, I seriously hope this channel makes it big! As a controller player for me AC on Xbox is utterly unrivalled when it comes to controller feedback, the vibration makes it sooooo easy to threshold brake and to know exactly when your losing grip, the controller stick completely reflects the Ingame wheel and while that does mean you need to practice smoothness a lot, it also means the wheel is as accurate as possible, no smoothness bollocks that smudges the accuracy of your inputs as seen in a lot of rally games and pretty much every other racing game Unfortunately however Xbox has updated the controller making the analogue stick really quite bad. Instead of following you input it snaps with your input, so when it turn left instead of the analog input following my inputs, it snaps a couple degrees at a time, it has effectively made my driving style entirely obsolete

any papyrus sim works great with controllers, just turn steering linearity down in control settings, and raise steering ratio in your car settings. devs knew a lot of people didnt have wheel and pedals back then, and its not too bad, this goes for all games in the series, grand prix legends is a great one, and its totally free, well, the entire series is but GPL stands out. emulating the gran turismo games works too, and forza project plus works fine through an emulator as well, tons of options.

There's also the Advanced Gamepad Assist script for Assetto on PC which can be freely adjusted to smooth out steering and countersteering to any level you want, and it is absolute bliss, even on my old PS3 contoller.

That's true! As good as AC is, I opted to recommend AMS2 since it's so much easier for a beginner to get up and running with. Much less tinkering and no mods required, and of course the ai racing is a weak spot for AC.

I've recently started sim-racing back in late december of 2023, a few days before new years on my previous pc after getting a brand new controller, since then I feel like if you want to get as accurate as you can to a sim-wheel, is using a controller and configuring the dead zone settings and how steering feels. Coming from someone whose new to Assetto, with only 4 - 6 months of play time, I feel like controller is the best way to go if you're like me and don't have the money laying around for an entry level or higher level sim-racing wheel. If you want to stay within the 500 dollar range and have fun, go for the PS5 to get a chance to play Assetto or GT if you want realism. If you have a little bit more money, go for a pc and use controller. It can be just as engaging as when you're using a wheel.

Nice video. Would also add that you can tinker a fair bit using Steam controller setup as well besides the ingame settings. I went from using a wheel for many years back to a controller and race ACC in that. Very doable and fun. You just reminded me toinstall Dirt Rally 2.0 again. Haven't played that in a long time . Would also give a shout out for Wreckfest, very accessible and really nice physics that definetely border more on the sim side. And if you crash it's not a problem.

Found a league in my country, and we race twice a week. It's been awesome, everyone is so helpful with the newer guys like me, until 3 months ago I used most assists and automatic gears and now I race without them, and I'm way faster. You don't need all of that fancy gear to be fast. I have had a wheel setup back some years ago and I noticed something: when you don't have the space, or the right setup to have a wheel, just don't buy one, it will give you nightmares, you will drive worse and start hating racing. My desk is pretty thin, and I had a DFGT, which is definitely one of the weakest force feedback wheels out there (and my desk was bending), plus I had to spend 10 minutes for mounting everything and still being frustrated because the experience was not immersive, so I left SimRacing. About one year later, after having sold my old wheel, I decided to try again to race, but using an x360 pad to check out how the experience was and, surprisingly, I was having fun. You know what happens when the setup is right and you have fun? You go faster than with better gear, because you feel more comfortable with that. I'm still racing, still having fun, and actually more competitive than before (I've achieved quite some podiums and one win on LFM, and debuted in a simracing porsche cup). So why am I writing all of this? Basically, if you have good gear, but which makes you feel frustrated, you could be faster with worse gear that doesn't. And DISCLAIMER, if you're reading this comment, in this video, you probably don't have enough money or space to get a full SimRacing setup, so, if you do, don't be silly and respect other people's opinions and choices. Please, if you're passionate about motorsport and simracing, just buy a sim and race, learn how to stay on track, how the game makes you feel, no matter which gear you have, just have fun, race, and be respectful on track. Oh, and plus, if you want a truly immersive pad sim, just go with RFactor 2, it's so detailed, you can really feel everything even on the pad
@DiariesOfABadDriver
@DiariesOfABadDriver 22 күн бұрын
@@pho5phoros I went through a very similar thing with the dfgt strapped to my desk, it just wasn't immersive and was a pain in the ass to setup so I went back to the controller. I have a direct drive setup with a handbrake and shifter on a wheel stand now which is WAY better and I'm quite happy with it, but I agree with you that in many ways a controller is preferable to a bad wheel setup. Thanks for watching and for sharing your thoughts!

@pho5phoros 22 күн бұрын
@@DiariesOfABadDriver Of course! But I'm not saying that the controller is always better, I said that this can work for people who don't have enough space or money for that setup, and having a crappy steering wheel, with the relative mounting time, can only become an excuse to quit

i "simrace" on rFactor and GTR2, for me if you get your perfect configuration, it can still be a pretty fun experience, I used multiple F1 CTDP and FSOne mods, DTM, VLN 2005 and use the 25th anniversary patch on GTR2, I usually don't use force feedback because how much it uses the batteries on the Xbox controller, but it's a fun experience if you are on a kinda experienced, even if raceroom is limited to buy most categories, it can be fun on a controller too

If you're on the absolute low end side of things u should go for Automobilista 1. It has great controller support and the physics are second to none. Assetto Corsa may be also a great choice but it has alot of cpu issues especially when racing against AI, so u should need at least 4th gen dual core i3 or smt to run it properly or else the game will crash mid racing. So, yeah, definitely go for Automobilista 1

The answer is Raceroom: No nonsense. Open the game, pick your mode, car, track, and race. Graphics are good enough, runs smoothly on Steam Deck with low battery drain. Top-notch physics. Third-person camera is excellent. Controller support is phenomenal. Seriously, other sim developers should take notes. I own a wheel, but I prefer a controller. When someone says you must use a wheel for sims, I picture a socially challenged nerd. Good controller support is respect for the consumer. You only buy what you want to play, and there are sales. Sound design is outstanding. Tracks are well-made. Adaptive AI is VERY solid. In short, best sim out there. The only downside: you need to be online.

@@AlexandrePapao raceroom is well worth checking out for sure, and I'm quite looking forward to the big update that's on the way! When I tried it, I personally didn't have a great experience with the controller compared to the games I showed in the video, but it does feel very good on the wheel. I think the business model is, by far, the most off-putting part of raceroom and why it wouldn't be where I would tell people to start. Being able to simply buy a game and have it include a bunch of content out of the box is much simpler. For instance, a lot of people aren't going to get as far as figuring out that raceroom's steam prices are significantly more expensive and that you want to buy content directly off their website for the best value. No rain or night racing is also a bit underwhelming in this day and age, if you ask me.
@AlexandrePapao

@@DiariesOfABadDriver Thanks for the video! I really enjoyed it. There’s not enough content out there about using controllers in sim racing, so it’s great to see someone covering it. I understand where you’re coming from. It took me a while to warm up to investing in RaceRoom too. I also enjoy the games you mentioned in the video-they all have their strengths. For me, the controller support in RaceRoom has been solid, and it’s one of the main reasons I stick with it, alongside the performance on the Steam Deck and overall gameplay. But I totally get that it might not be the same for everyone. The business model can be a bit off-putting at first, and the lack of rain or night racing is definitely noticeable. But once you get past that, there’s a lot to enjoy. Thanks again for the content, and looking forward to seeing more!
