I’d sit and listen to you talking about Christie for ages. I started reading Agatha Christie this summer and I’m willing to get as much as her bibliography I can! I hope I can get some of the English editions you have (they are GORGEOUS!) Love from Italy 🇮🇹❤️

I went with the short stories and I'm happy I did. I admit I did struggle with Marple more now, but I think my mind is trained from watching a lot of crime shows to look at crimes differently than someone when these were published.

My top 5 Marple would be 1. The Moving Finger 2. A Murder is Announced 3. The Murder at the Vicarage 4. 4:50 from Paddington 5. A Pocket Full of Rye. Loved the video!

Thanks for doing Mission Marple! I haven’t been able to participate in the discussion as much as I would like to because I’ve either been ahead or behind but reading the Marple canon in order for the first time has really shed new light in the books. Following the changes in St. Mary Mead may be the best part. It’s constantly evolving but it’s consistently both so cozy and so brutal!

Sleeping murder is my favourite Marple book. I read it after reading a couple of underwhelming books from Agatha (60s & 70s) and it reenergised my love for her books.

I agree with you about small British villages in the canons of female mystery writers. Watching all of the 20+ 'Midsomer Murders' series as my husband and I just did this year - the little, 'sleepy' British village is treacherous. Even DI Barnaby's wife did not want to move to any of the small villages in Midsomer County but found a house just outside of Causton, the County city seat. Great wrap up. Thanks for doing this readalong. Just love your book shelves. They are curated so beautifully. If I was making videos and doing a tag where I would be prompted to name the BookTuber whose shelves I most would want to emulate, I would choose yours. The best to you. Look forward to any more Christie or other British women mystery writer videos in the future.

Have you read ‘A is for Arsenic’ which is a great review of the poisons used by Agatha Christie in her books? I’m finishing it now, it’s a combination of detail science, history and how Christie used various poisons in her mysteries. Each chapter is a first letter (A to Z) of a name of a poison and relates it to the specific books she used it in. Great read that I recommend!

I’ve always been so overwhelmed by Christie and now that I’m done with her standalones, I’ve been debating which series I should go with. You’ve convinced me to go with Marple! For some reason, I’ve always felt like I wouldn’t like her but from what you describe, she sounds up my alley! 😂 I suppose you’ll have to go with Tommy and Tuppence next!

Although I did not keep up with the Marple full list, I really enjoyed the ones that I did read. I knew nothing about Agatha Christie except for the ones that were converted to movie format. I also dug into quite a few of the Poirot books! Seriously that was sad as I love reading. I so appreciate your reviews and challenges and have grown in appreciation for her writing!! As always, thanks so much for the nudge to broaden my scope of reading. Love your videos!!

"They do it with Mirrors" is probably my fav. The characters are pretty memorable, and there isn't too many of them. I love the way the plot plays out. You know... The lights go down, a dead body is found, but it's found in the wrong room (?) and even though the mystery is easy to solve if you have ever read any book by Christie. I just like it

This is excellent. I enjoy how you break down the characters and motives very quickly and accurately. I love how you describe Miss Marple as this rather quiet but abrupt woman who could be having tea with friends and suddenly recount a vicious murder or a tawdry affair. I think the Marple cannon is more appealing to me because she isn't as intimidating as Poirot. Everyone knows how shrewd she is, but she doesn't represent herself to her friends or the police as the smartest person in the room.

Big thanks for Project Poirot, Mission Marple and the ranking of all her books. You got me hooked (again) on Christie. Also thanks for recommending to read the Marple books in the order they were written. I'm planning to re-read them and I am not quite sure where to put "Sleeping Murder" (before or after "The Moving Finger"? There are different opinions about the setting of the timeline of "Sleeping Murder".). But in the order how the books were written I will read the "The Thirteen Problems" first of all of them. 12 of its 13 short stories were already published in magazines in the late 1920s before they were published as a book. It also feels like Miss Marple is really introduced here.

Love your Videos! I have been a Fan of Agatha for 40 years and I have all her books. In my opinion the most boring Marple books are Mirrors, Bertram and sleeping murder. I hope you give Nemesis a chance, (excellent very old miss Marple ) . My top 5 A murder is announced 4.50 from Padington 13 Problems A pocketful of rye The moving finger Death comes at the end, ordeal by innosence and murder is easy are also loved ones without Poirot or Marple 🙂🙂

I just love Miss Marple, she truly reminds me of my grandmother (who loved murder mysteries, and was always suspicious of people). I still have two to go! I made a mistake and read Nemesis first, so now I have sleeping murder and the final cases to go. I’m glad to hear that they are going to be good. I’m looking forward to reading them SOON ❤️

I love Marple, but I think one of the reason I prefer Poirot is because of all the supporting group of friends that help him along with his mysteries. I have only read A Caribbean Mystery and that thing was filled with violence and dark characters. I loved how Marple just saw the worst in people and she just went ahead instead of cowering because of all the wickedness around her. I can see why Jason Rafiel called her Nemesis.

Miss Marple is a sweet old lady, more likable than the snobby Poirot.

I found Nemesis more interesting than Bertram’s Hotel, which seemed to drag on with nothing really happening except old ladies drinking tea and eating seed cake and donuts. With Nemesis I felt more of a “wait for it, wait for it”… both have been so freely adapted to the screen, showing screen writers were trying to reinvent a good idea into someone more substantial. No one succeeded.

I'm so glad you did this project and discovered your enjoyed her books more than you thought. I feel pretty similar to your rankings; for me, I would definitely say my top three are 1. Sleeping Murder, 2. The Murder at the Vicarage and 3. A Pocket Full of Rye. Looking forward to the follow up Christie videos! By the way, do you have many completely unread Christies left? I think I remember you saying you hadn't read Death Comes as the End yet?

Do you have to read the Marple series in order?
@eleanor7
@eleanor7 3 жыл бұрын
Is it just me, but are a lot of Marple's murders misdirection? Like Body In The Library, Pocket of Rye, Caribbean Mystery, Murder Is Announced, Moving Finger, etc. Where the murder has you looking over here, while they are actually doing x, y, z over in the other direction. Or that the motive is for a different reason to throw blame elsewhere. Or the "victim" dies at a particular time so that the killer has an alibi, but it was a replacement victim or they were actually killed at another time.

I disagree about Bertram’s and Nemesis, I know I’m coloring this in the era of filmdom, but those two have filmed so well and are iconic from the BBC series. That makes them stand up. Such good filmed versions couldn’t come from poor books. I just feel we do need to take that into account, or I do, and I would put them higher.

For me my top Marples are 1. 450 from Paddington 2. Pocket Full of Rye 3. A Murder is Announced 4. Body in the Library 5. Sleeping Murder Surprised to realize Id never read The 13 Problems, now on my tbr. Really disliked The Moving Finger. Found Carribean Mystery and Murder at the Vicarage really forgettable. The 2 books with mirrors were decent.
