I've been a major sci-fi devotee since the golden age of the 1950s. Big Robert Heinlein fan. First time I came across your channel. Great review with particularly good insights. Thank you. Subscribed.

I started with the Heinlein Juveniles so many years ago. Then picked up his adult books as I found them in garage sales and used bookstores. I haven't read them all, and never even finished "I will Fear No Evil." But science fiction in general and Heinlein particular had an important impact on my life. I grew up in a near-cult religion. Totally bonkers, looking back on it. Heinlein (and others) put different ideas into my head. Science, different cultures, and a myriad of new ideas to explore. The world became a bit less black and white. Having grown up under hard core preaching, I Heinlein's preaching didn't bother me. Ha! Sci-Fi wasn't the only positive influence, but an enjoyable one. Eventually I outgrew the "cult" and left it behind. I don't agree with many of Heinlein's ideas, but I do have a soft spot in my heart for the privilege of seeing other universes and ideas that I never would have considered. BTW, I see a chess clock on your bookcase. Do you think there is a correlation between enjoying chess and enjoying Sci-Fi?

Nice to me you, thanks for sharing that great introduction and personal insights into what science fiction means for you. I love the genre, obviously, and it's great to meet like minded people. Interesting point re: science fiction and chess, I wonder if there is a correlation. My interest in that particular piece relates to my other hobby of vintage watchmakimg, in particular, soviet era clocks and watches.

Oh, I'd love to have a Soviet era chess clock! Totally outdated for today's time controls with an increment each move. But wouldn't that turn heads at the chess club? @@thesci-fished

@@wilburnleemccullough9903 wouldn't it just 😁. I think they can still be found on ebay at a reasonable price, the war in the Ukraine however puts the shipping in potential jeopardy.

*Citizen of the Galaxy* to prepare for the weirdness of: *Stranger in a Strange Land* Heinlein's supposed preachiness never bothered me. I don't mind thinking about ideas even if I disagree with them. I decided that I was an agnostic at 12.

Good suggestion, I still think this one is also a good place to start. I don't mind reading new ideas even when I don't agree with them, however I sometimes feel his tone is a little condescending which gets a little under my skin at times lol

(Commenting at 1:14.) Double Star isn't my top Heinlein, but it certainly is the one I would recommend to start with. A fascinating study with, I think?, nothing controversial. One wonders if it would play out like that in real life, eg with Vladimirovitch Putin.

I think it definitely begs the question, especially with the growth of AI and deepfakes.

The best place to start with Robert Heinlein is to read Robert Silverberg instead. That being said, Double Star is the only Heinlein I truly liked.

I'm a huge fan of Robert Silverberg, there's not a single novel of Silverberg I have not enjoyed. I can't say the same for Heinlein 🤔

I can't remember saying 'extreme', which part are you referring to?
