My great uncle Willard founded Loon Lake Lodge after WW2. I worked there a couple summers and spent most my youth there. I was very blessed best memories of my life!

To add to the history of Loon Lake Lodge --- Once Willard became too old to handle running Loon Lake Lodge he sold the lodge to Tom and Terry Caldwell. As new owners, Tom and Terry Caldwell allowed Willard to live in a cabin at the lodge for a few years, until such time as he no longer could care for himself and he moved into a nursing home. Tom and Terry Caldwell ran the lodge and began serving dinner (by reservation) for a few years before selling it to the current owners.

My great uncle Willard Johnson founded that lodge and I served up there many years and spent many times in the lodge. So many great memories.

My parents built cabin 12 at Rockwood Lodge, and I spent a lot of time there, both summer and winter. They sold it to the lodge when they moved to Florida in the early 1980s.

Love the Gunflint Trail!! Spent a few days at the Gunflint Lodge couple years ago and always love it up there. Going to do a winter trip one of thee days and to see the tour of these lodges is wonderful. Have to experience some of that northwoods winter one day from down here in Louisiana. To read Justine Keerfoot's books and others about the trail really give life to these resorts and this video helps us see where some are today with new owners and modern times. Great video Jodi!

Justine’s books are great reads. I definitely recommend that winter trip. It’s a lot quieter on the Gunflint Trail in the winter.

What is the weather like here in late October?

Chilly, maybe some light snow. But beautiful and more quiet than during the busy summer months. October is lovely on the Gunflint Trail.

As you had mentioned at the beginning of the video there are many other resorts that are open during the winter that you were unable to film because of the fact that they were very busy. If the viewers want solitude the resorts in the video would be a great choice. However, some of the other Gunflint Trail resorts have a multitude of cabins open and are much more active and have many guests during the winter. A few examples are: Hungry Jack Lodge on Hungry Jack lake, whose guests are primarily into snowmobiling and ice fishing and has a number of cabins open during the winter. Hungry Jack Lodge hosts the Gunflint Trail Snowmobile Club snowmoblie drag races each year, which is a real big event. Golden Eagle Lodge on Flour Lake has multiple cabins open during the winter and attracts mostly cross-country skiers people who like to snowshoe. Golden Eagle has their own cross-country ski trail groomer and offers night-time cross country skiing. In conclusion, there is a lot to do on the Gunflint Trail during the winter.
