I use a cane for balance and I do like to have it handy for self defence. I have found for me I like to hook the cane over my leg just above the knee on my right side and angle the tip under my left leg at an angle, or slightly back under my chair. I am right handed and this makes it easy for me to grab it to help me get up or I can get a hand on it if I need it for self defense and no one else can grab it because it is under the table and out of their reach and it is not sticking out in the isle to trip any one. ( I do carry a self defence bird beak style cane.) I just found your channel and I am a subscriber. Thank you for your good advise.

Great video. When carrying a crook top, I simply hook it on the right side of my belt with it angled toward my feet under the table, and try to get the correct seat in a booth. On a barstool type of chair, it won't reach the ground, so hangs straight down. I did discover that a leather loop for my Condor tomahawk works great for a ball ended cane. Works like a carpenters hammer loop on the belt. We used to make them out of coat hangers too. Drop it right into the loop. Takes a few seconds to get out, but it's secure and somewhat handy. Because of the cane length and belt height, I can even walk with the cane in the loop without it dragging the ground. The leather loop folds back out of the way, while the coat hanger one sticks out about 1 1/2 ". I use it all the time even when making a purchase standing up. Even though I have problems with both knees and use the cane on which ever side has the roughest terrain, I secure it on the right side. Because: my carry gun (P365) is on my left, so I can draw it easier while driving a vehicle. I carry a Spyderco Street Bowie horizontally on the front belt, so it can be drawn left or right handed. I practice ALL weapons and defensive techniques with both hands.

I use a cane for balance and mobility. At this time now it's mainly for balance. Sitting at a restaurant table or church potluck, I put the cane in front of me between my thighs with the tip pointed slightly back under the chair and let it res on the table. At the bank, post office or anyplace else with a counter, I never put the tip of the cane on the counter. I will lay the cane on the counter if there's no place to lean it. But I make sure the tip that touches the floor never touches the counter. Just angle it a bit so the lower portion of the cane sticks out over the edge. Not really sure what to do with it at potluck when I'm going through the line filling my plate. I try to lean it against the table every time I stop. But it roll easily. The last cane I had was a nice lightweight walking stick. I crocheted a nice loop to tie to the top at the neck of it just below the knob. Made it long enough so I loop it over my arm and still have plenty of movement to use my arm. Then had to go to using a wheelie walker for quite a while. Now using a metal cane with a handle top. Don't know how I'm going to deal with this thing when we ever start having potlucks again someday. No potlucks at this time because of covid. I actually use two canes now for going out walking. And considering getting a different type that would be useful for defense for walking. Would certainly like to find a more convenient way to deal with potlucks when we start having them again. Because the canes I have now and the ones I want to get don't have that thinner neck where I can put the strap. I suppose I could get the wrist strap that attaches to the cane with the tight elastic band. And add the longer loop to that. I'll add also, I never use a wrist strap of any kind when I'm actually walking with the cane. I always feel like if I manage to find a way to fall anyway, I'll break my wrist if it's strapped to the cane.

I'm 71 & I've had bilateral total knee joint replacement prosthetics since 2005. I don't need a cane for mobility, I just choose to carry the Cold Steel Axe Head Tactical Cane mostly for tactical & for exercise reasons while walking around the village where I reside in rural Western Mass. Obviously, with the pandemic, nobody has been allowed to dine in restaurants for almost a year, but, being a lefty dominant, I would slip the cane inside my left side groin area & keep the head in my lap. Easy enough to retrieve for assisting to stand & it won't be inadvertently be left behind. I would never leave the cane on the chair back or in any orientation where it was not touching my body because certain people that have no morals or values that see anything that looks like it could be lifted without the owner noticing, is fair game for pilferage. Sorry to seem so cynical, but I am testifying from experience.

I have to walk with a cane myself and I do have to keep it close to hand. When we're eating out and there isn't a wall or chair to lean it against I'll put it between my knee's and slide the tip forward enough that the hook isn't uncomfortable but still close to hand. I use a 36" cane fwiw. I won't put it where someone else can put their hands on it for any reason. I haven't had to yet in the years I've needed it but if necessary, I'd put it at the edge of the table closest to me with my plate just past it. Ya gotta do something with it to keep it close to hand.

When sitting at a table so it's out of the way and handy if I need it to defend myself or just get up it's between my legs and it's there when I need it to get up from the table because I do have some leg, hip and back problems. The main thing of the cane between my legs it's out of the way and doesn't bother anyone but it's easy for me to use it for whatever reason I need it for getting up or self defence it's there. Plus it's great for reaching across the table to get the last piece of chicken or a rib and when you hit someone on the hand they will let you have that last rib.

Personally, I have a cane holder that clips around the cane and has a flat surface that sits on the edge of the table beside me. It hold the cane just off the floor so that it is straight up and down, so it is not being knocked over by people passing by. Mine is made from silicone, so it doesn't scratch the cane and when I am finished eating I simply pick my cane up, slip the holder off and slide it in my back pocket as I walk out.

Great video topic. I always insert my cane underneath the table at a 45 degree angle (tip forward, pointing at the floor with crook pointed upwards) until the shaft touches the edge of the table and the crook pokes out over the tabletop. The horn rests on the table top so the weight of the cane is balanced on the horn (hope that makes sense). I prefer to insert the cane between my leg and the table leg, thus 'trapping' it (closer to the inside of the table leg when possible to avoid accidentally kicking it). This keeps it tucked out of sight, out of the way and prevents it from tipping over while remaining within easy reach at all times (just grab it by the crook and go!). Floor contact isn't necessary because the horn is what supports the weight of the cane and keeps it in place. Bon appetit!

I am a new cane user (mobility). I had a weeks practice before a two week international group trip. I had at least three meals a day. My cane hit the floor, a couple windows (luckily thick windows) chairs… I did try the crook between the legs, tip under the table. The person across from me kicked the cane driving it into my stomach. 😂 As I read through the comments the consensus seems to be cane between legs, tip under a leg. I will be practicing at home before the next trip. Thank you for the only video I could find on this subject and asking for suggestions! My ‘cane masters’ cane thanks you also!

Gary, I don't need a cane for mobility. I have rarely taken a cane into a restaurant, but whenever I go into a casino I take it. Besides hanging it on the slot machine console like a tabletop, I like to put it between my legs. I point the tip on an angle toward the machine and the crook stays between my legs. The cane never falls or trips anyone, and stays very handy if I ever needed it as a weapon.

@lucdenolf15704 жыл бұрын
Mister Gary Hernandez, you have asked suggestions to have your cane save and ready in a restaurant. This is my suggestion. Take a shoelace or simple (para)cord of about 1 meter or 3 feet long. Place it over the seat of the chair you are sitting on so that you have a loop in which the walking stick can stand right next to your chair. Sitting on the chair prevents the cord from moving and keeps the walking stick in place. If necessary, grab the walking stick, stand (more or less) straight and the cord will not hinder the development of the desired techniques. You can also use an shorter shoelace but the long shoelace makes that you can enjoy sitting the way you like. Nobody is bothered by the walking stick in this way and it does not seem threatening. A simple explanation of "what else should I do with this thing," is sufficient. The walking stick no longer falls to the ground. A shoelace takes no place in your pocket or purse.

I place the cane on the outside of my right leg with the tip touching the ground ( my right knee is injured and swells sometimes). I then take my right foot and cross it over the top of the cane and prop my right leg from the knee down on top of the cane. So my right leg is not straight but it is straighter than if my foot was on the floor. It feels better to take the weight off my knee, it secures the cane also. I sometimes bring my cane in case my knee goes out while I’m shopping etc. i still use this method as it keeps me from forgetting my cane when I am leaving. It’s like having my right leg in a position similar to sitting in a lounge chair.

It depends on how much room I have. At church yesterday I switched positions because if I had the crook over one knee with bottom going under the other it was partially in the isle which could have tripped someone. I switched it to between my legs but if someone wanted to get through I would pull it straight up with end on floor. Sometimes I'd put my chin on the crook. So it depends on what I'm doing but it never leaves me because it's no good for me as a self defense tool if I have to go get it to use it. Sometimes I need both hands if I'm carrying something and having the hook over one arm is inconvenient so I'm thinking about getting a strip of Velcro and looping it around my belt and the crook of the cane for those times. With Velcro you can fasten the cane to a chair or table leg also. I will have to experiment.

If you have no one seated on the end, then being right handed, just slide the shaft under the table on my right side where the person on the other side of the table won't kick it or trip over it getting up, and hook the crook on the table top. It's out of the way, it's available, and it's not going to slide or fall.

I keep my cane away from others so they can’t grab it. I see some cane users have a hand strap on it, so it is tied to them. This may be more because a cane is hard for some to pick up if they drop it.

Ok. Here are my views. I am 72 yrs old, 5'4" and about 170 lbs. In my younger years, I did study some Akido, Tai Chi, Kali, Cane Masters, and plain old street fighting. The martial arts use of staff, stick, and cane has always interested me. I have a bad right knee, so I wear a cane pretty much where ever I go. I like the wood or rattan crook canes best. When I'm at a cafe or what ever, I sometimes hook the cane over the back of the chair only with the shaft in front of the chair. That way I don't have to worry about anyone tripping on it and the shaft is just under my right hand. The other way I like to put it (especially sitting in a booth) is to rest it under the table lip and under my left leg a bit, with the tip on my left heel or about half way up the instep, with the crook resting on top of my right thigh. These are the most handy for me to get to the cane either for mobility or defense.

Bringing the shaft forward keeps it next to me instead of sticking out where it can be kicked by someone, and I can simply drop my hand, palm down, to the middle of the shaft for leverage in standing up, or palm up if I want to raise the cane as a blocker. Keeping it between my legs gets in the way if I lean forward to eat a burger, or something messy.

@jayharvey92395 жыл бұрын
Great idea for stability poor idea as a self-defense cane. They just aren't made to take the impact laterally when used in a real defense scenario. They will do what they are designed to do collapse/fold.
@MrBluesluver5 жыл бұрын
Well a fold up cane would be better than nothing, but like Jay H. says, they aren't made strong enough for a lateral impact. At least not more than one or two shots, so you'd need to make them count. They folding cane is probably ok for stabbing or poking techniques. Like a shot to the throat, solar plexus, or a nerve cluster. I do carry a back up folding cane in my rode bike saddle bag and in the under seat storage of my scooter. But I always have my rattan or hard wood cane with me.
