I seriously dont know why people say this is a bad album. The phrygian mod gives the whole song a middle eastern, sinister vibe in the riff section. And the dragging slow rhythm in the verse is more heavy than some death metal ensembles these days. Just because it had some more catchy & cheesy lyric writting to some degree? Or because some drum or guitar parts were simplified compared to their thrash roots? I wish people would stop with this petty elitism to discriminate against other subgenres of music. Just like humans, musicians evolve too. And if they feel like to go a different route then they should. Its just that most bands dont have the courage to step out of their comfort zone. Both in fear of losing audience or respect from other bands in the scene lol. It becomes apparent when music sounds "forced". When the artist has no fun of playing it, then the audience sure as hell wont have any fun either. And I really enjoy the short country & blues inspired root Metallica took with Load & reload. James could really integrate some melodic clean lines which absolutely sound insane. Bands like Metallica dont need to follow any guidelines because they go their own unique path Thats whats being good band is all about. Having faith in themselves & their art they produce.
