15 years ago I bought a Magellan Sportrak pro. Just a simple arrow that always brought me back. 10 years ago I sold that Magellan and always regretted it. Now in 2019 I saw the Garmin 64st with all the bells and whistles remembering me of that good old rugged Magellan Sportrak pro. I can buy the more advanced Garmin with an altimeter and compass (3D), detailed maps etc, etc.... but then I remember that the old Magellan was rugged too, was resistant to water too, had great I mean great satellite (Waas) connection (always locked on; trees or no trees) and it had a good compass, an altimeter and a speed-meter. Hiking or sailing It was in my pocket. I was thinking of that simple arrow that always helped me on my way back (in the fog, mountains and on the water) I never got lost. That Magellan never let me down; 2 AA and 2 reserve AA for more then 30 hours. So I bought it again... in 2019. New... is not always better folks. It's trust what I bought back.

The newest 4" Montana doesn't have much over this unit. It's the same with Garmin car GPS units. My 2757LM still has what the 70LMT does minus the BT, Phone, and voice but the 2797LMT had that. I think they did add some landmark guidance to voice but that and the high-res pinch-screen are it..

Thank you for the film clip. I did find it very informative. As per garmin, am just plain partial to them. They do a wide range of products and on the whole they are good and they KNOW what they are doing. A question - how waterproof or water resistant is the device ?

Very informative and well done Justin. I am reviewing Garmin's full lineup and this covers the features nicely for off-road motorcycling & hiking. Considering the lineup - are you still happy with the 64st and have you tried the 64sx, 64csx, 66s? Sometimes it is a matter of features, i.e. more waypoints.

I briefly tried out older models and found them somewhat less than intuitive. Purchasing 1:50K/1:25K maps cost a small fortune. Battery life was also disappointing. I can see that handheld GPSMAPs could be useful if unable to use physical features to confirm your exact position. Even so. I think that I'll be relying on large-scale weatherproof maps and compass for a little while yet...I must be getting old! I realise it's been a while since you posted this video review, but in which areas would you say the 64st markedly improves on Garmin's earlier 62xx & 64xx series models? Informative review. Thanks for posting.

Among my complaints with many of the recent Garmin devices, and especially the GPSmap 64, is very limited specs in online manual. I was thinking to retire my 60CS, but it has far more complete specs than the 64. Given that so many people now use Smartphone apps, one would think Garmin would highlight specs more. If you happen to have some detailed specs, that would be nice to hear about.

Here's a link to Garmin's online manual: www8.garmin.com/manuals/webhelp/gpsmap64/EN-US/GUID-075511A0-202A-4CFE-BAB0-AD9EDE0024BA-homepage.html. You're right, sometimes I find myself searching further than Garmin for insight into how certain things work, especially for my Fenix 5.

As far as the smart notifications. If you are out in the mountains with no cell signal. The GPS shows you have emails, calls and texts. Can you see what was said in the emails or messages.? Or are you able to reply to emails or messages.?
@EdwardRaybould6 жыл бұрын
If you are not within range of a cell signal, you will not receive any notification pertaining to emails, calls, or text. Those items are all received by your phone while you are in range of a cell signal and a smart notification would appear on your paired Garmin GPS.

On the 64 does the compass work right when standing still like it does while walking? Say I'm walking the wrong way I stop, get a call then turn around only to find out that the compass is no longer working correctly. I'm lookng at getting the 35 and have been told that the two work similarly on a great many things.
@novagiragos7 жыл бұрын
With the 64 you have to be moving to get the compass to show the correct direction. The 64s and 64st has electronic compass and does not require movement to show correctly.
@eqlzr24 жыл бұрын
Sorry, but something about this doesn't ring true. At one point, he touts Garmin customer service because he says he had to call them a lot to figure how to do stuff with his device, and then he subsequently turns around and says that using the device was really easy, and he was able to use a lot of the features without having to read too many directions in a manual, which he also at another point says was not very complete. I just got one of these 64sx's a few days ago, and what I discovered was that it takes quite a bit of futzing around to do things with it, but that it seems to be a solid, reliable unit, and that with some effort it should be possible to master most of it's commonly used features and get a pretty good lifespan out of it. My real test of it was today when I headed out and intentionally ran into an area where I lost the use of my GaiaGPS app on my iPhone because I hadn't pre-loaded maps into it. I was easily able to use the Garmin 64sx to see where I was and found a couple dirt roads that I ran into and a few trails that I came across (100K Topo maps built-in). So this was mostly the reason I got the 64sx, and it worked fine. My unit didn't come with a carabiner clip which I ordered today, and I also got one of the slip-on neoprene cases with the clear plastic screen and button covers. While I was rather pleasantly surprised about the level of road and trail detail with the built-in 100K Topo maps, I nevertheless ordered the 24K Huntview maps with Birdseye Satellite Imaging to hopefully increase the detail in the views. Bottom line is that I think this will be a good performing unit if things continue as they have. I've had two earlier Garmins that have worked fine and still do after 20 years or so (an Etrex Venture and a Colorado 300). Many thanks.

+Nimir AL-Sagheer I dont know what he's talking about. The track recording DOES have a "go back" feature. And this definitely has waypoints and routes. *shrug* What GPS unit can't get you from A to B? Isn't that the entire point of GPS units?
@AdventureRig8 жыл бұрын
+Andrew Baker Sorry I should clarify. Some people expect a GPS like this to act like the GPS on their phone. This will not give you turn by turn directions on how to get to the top of a mountain or how to get to the backcountry lakes. I had a comment from a passerby while I was in the backcountry with this unit and they said how much they liked it. There complaint was it would not tell them where to go, only where they had been. You can add your own waypoints though and that will help with your route finding.
@xbeanx30007 жыл бұрын
Just 2 questions. If there are no batteries inside does it matter if water floods into the battery compartment, and if it doesn't matter then would it be a case of waiting until that area dries? Secondly can everything you do on a handheld GPS be done on a normal smartphone that has built-in GPS?
@AdventureRig7 жыл бұрын
I don't think I'd want it to get wet just because it's an electronic device but I don't have a definitive answer. No, this GPS can do a lot more then what a smartphone can do. It's kind of comparing apples to oranges.
@JoshuDoerksen7 жыл бұрын
Almost every phone has built in GPS, its the app you download which gives the functionality, such as saving way points or tracks. I was using offline google maps for a bit but it gets very annoying, and very limited information storage capabilities. I prefer a dedicated unit. Also for people in Canada (like me) and fairly far north by most peoples standards, or who like to travel into the north the GLONASS is a nice feature as GPS doesn't have the best coverage in the north.
