Which 12 volt lithium battery should I choose?
When it comes to 12-volt battery types, the choice can seem a little daunting to those unfamiliar with battery technology. All 12-volt battery types are similar in that they provide power for your 12V electrical system. However, there are significant differences in how they’re designed, their capacity, the amount of maintenance required, and the cost to buy and install.
Which 12 volt lithium battery should I choose?.
In this video I go over my options and what I think of each battery.
Lithium batteries can be safely discharged to a 100% Depth Of Charge for most users to obtain 10-12 years of life with a good quality Lithium Battery.

Just bought the ITech 120Ah and it's definitely not the same battery. The orange top is slightly deeper in colour, the carry strap is a wrap around and not top only as with Chins, its IP67 vs IP65 of Chins and the terminal points are noticeable different in colour ie ITech has a copper ring and Chins doesn't. I also think that ITech is similar to All Spark in that it's Australian Owned and Designed but manufactured in China. Doesn't specifically state "Australian Made" only Australian owned and uses Lithium mined in WA. I would not buy a Chins but 100% comfortable with ITech as I could walk in and walk out with a battery. All Spark is also 100% legit and super quality 👌🏻 but I didn't want to replace my DC Charger to a Lithium profiled one.

@@neilstewart5060 They are definitely NOT using Australian lithium, nor are All spark. 100% is designed and made in china, you can ring the factories and get any name put on the cases. They are also NOT independently IP tested. I have photo's of them gluing lids on in a kitchen using glue from bunnings (they got them unglued so they could claim Australian made) and the photo was from their own facebok page and pasted by a staff member (it was quickly deleted).

Hi Phil, I have got the 200Ah Dcs, It's a been a good battery had it for a year. I run the BMV-712 and also have the 100% soc issue occasionally but with the Dcs Battery app I can always tell the state of charge of the battery and then manually correct the BMV-712. As you said with a 200AH you rarely need to worry about what you have got left and with the Itechworld 40amp dcdc it charges up fast. The itechworld 200AH seems like good bang for buck option. All the best on making a final decision. I look forward to seeing what you get and wanted to say I enjoy watching your channel. Side note I purchased the Kickass Daul Zone 75L after see your review and as well as a few others.

Thanks. Strange issue that one with the SOC on the Victron 712, in almost 4 years using the enerdrive epro plus I’ve never ever had to calibrate it. It just performed flawlessly and very accurate. It’s a bit of a challenge getting this Victron 712 to register accurate info. You have a good point there with the DCS how you can check the SOC via Bluetooth and than adjust the 712. I don’t believe you can access SOC with your phone in the itechworld world battery’s. I hope your happy with the kickass fridge. Almost two years I owned mine for now, going to film a two year review soon.

@@PhilsCampingReviews Following these threads with interest. Just bought a canopy for grey nomading and my old underbonnet deep cycle is buggered, at its best it only ran my trailblazer for 48 hrs. So I'm looking for a fresh start battery wise. I want to camp for 5-6 days stationary. Went to the camping show in bne and came across Provolt 310 amp battery $2350 show special. It was a fairly small size even compared to the 200amp batteries in your video. Went to drive to Caboolture today to buy one from the manufacturer, couldn't find an address or even a phone no, just a email address So a bit of a red flag for me. Saw your comment about your 300amp and was wondering what it was? Could really use some advice. Don't mind spending money but I only want to spend it once. Was going to chuck 2×200 redarc panels on the roof but they seem to be unavailable. Prefer to keep it simple. Fridge draws 5 amps but being a trailblazer only runs about 50% of the day, got a sirocco fan .5 amp max and some low voltage lighting. Down the track maybe run a playstation and monitor for those rainy days. Anyway sorry for the ramble Phil, but I'm a bit lost, would appreciate any advice.

Kickass are a good brand. The lithium pack in question I think is limited in it's continuous discharge. If you plan to only run a fridge and charge phones, It will work, but if you want to run a induction cooktop you will need to purchase a lithium that's suitable. Remember one thing, a Lithium battery is a long term investment, You might say now, like many others do, I'm not ever going to use an induction cooktop or a little air fryer, In 5 years time, You might be wanting to run those items.

The only thing id like on the Itech batteries is bluetooth, but that can be handled by other means. In all honesty thou, so long as the engine runs every few weeks or you have solar, you wont hurt a lithium if you buy the right unit. Went not in use it just sit there doing nothing and is always ready to go when i need it. Even after sitting for 1 year, i top it up before a trip and at worst it take 5mins to fully charge with a max 9amp solar. We have dcs batteries, based on some very good and sincere reviews originally from Stefan Fischer (I think this is the guy you were potentially referring??). He looked into various lithium batteries, and remarked that DCS were the the only company that were happy for Stephan to see inside the battery box, (I-Tech, Revolution, and even Enerdrive were not prepared to do this!). Stephan anyway noted how good the internals on the DCS appeared; high build standard. I live in Qld, and liked that DCS were fairly locally based, as opposed to other batteries based interstate. We have DCS 2 X 100 a/h and 1 X 200 a/hr - and so far, so good, although we do not use them under the bonnet. DCS, I think for the quality, appeared not too badly priced either. Thanks Anne for commenting, DCS was my preferred battery out of those choices at the time. In the end it came down to budget, The Itechworld 120X went on sale for $820 delivered to my door. That's the option I went for. I am still using that battery. Overall. I'm finding it not a bad battery. Although when I purchased I thought I was purchasing a 120 ah battery. Turns out they are not 120 they are 105ah battery's. I'm far from happy about that. I plan to film another video soon similar to this one when I'm ready to upgrade my battery. DCS is still in the list.

Be aware that Stephan has now withdrawn his endorsement of DCS under the bonnet. I relied on his recommendation 3 years ago....and I think he may be right, ca[pacity has diminished beyond the manufacturer's representations. I now have my 2 x 75 Ah DCS under bonnet system under close surveillance.

Thanks for your response. I do note, that more recently I became aware of Stephan's poor experiences using the DC's batteries under the bonnet (where even after 3 replacements of battery, specific testing, showed a significant demise in battery life, and in a very short timeframe. My own family have invested fairly heavily in the purchase of these batteries, which continue to work fine, although, not in an under bonnet situation. Ideally, it would be good to subject them to this specific testing that Stephan refers, to see if even using these batteries in a non under bonnet situation their longevity is still an issue. Whilst I think some people have put lithium batteries under their bonnets for space saving reasons as well, my husband and I just could not justify this, e.g cost of lithium battery is way more expensive than traditionally cranking lead acid, which both starts a car just fine and lasts a long time at a fraction of the cost to lithium. Of course, we have a little camper trailer, thus are not constricted to a car. Hearing Stephan's less than ideal experience is very disappointing, and I struggle to understand why a business would recommend putting their products under the bonnet without all the necessary testing beforehand. We had been keen to buy more batteries from DC's, but at this stage, remain uncertain as to what DCS will do from here. If the real issue is used under the bonnet, can you remove your batteries and use them elsewhere in your vehicle and put a lead acid one under bonnet instead? All the best

I can now confirm that my 2 underbonnet 75Ah DCS batteries - installed in June 2020, so now out of the 3 year warranty period- now measure a total of 65% when fully charged. I propose to revert to lead acid plus DCDC charger under bonnet- that will cost me less than half the cost of replacing the lithium with like. I will install a 120Ah slimline lithium in the rear to run the fridge and lights.

All the Enerdrive batteries have a BMS. There is no stated warranty, you should have asked. I want to run a 10A powerboard, so that means a 3Kw inverter and enough battery discharge capacity to deliver 300A. For most brands I looked at, that meant 300Ah of batteries, I chose 2x200Ah for headroom. Chargers are rated by current draw, so my 50A B2B charger draws 50A. It will take some time to charge 400Ah of battery from flat. However, I don't expect to flatten the batteries, ever. Battery longevity is measured in full charge/discharge cycles. How often do you do one full cycle? I am retired, and in principle I could do a full cycle in 24Hr, but it's more likely 10-20%.20% sometimes. Unless I buy an induction stovetop from IKEA. The cheap one. Some of the batteries I skip discharge at 50% capacity, I would have needed 600Ah of one of those.

You would have heard my concerns with warranty claims if needed. It was most important that the warranty procedure was easy for me. So I phoned itechworld just before I made the decision and they informed me that if I needed to claim warranty that they will cover costs in getting the battery sent back to them. For this reason and the sale I purchased the itechworld battery. I’ve since found out that this is not the case, I was lied to on the phone. Phil, You are a really nice guy but you must take lots of care in reading Spec. sheets. All Li batteries have BMS (battery management systems ) installed. I was looking over your shoulder as you were talking and BMS was mentioned on every sheet. On one battery spec sheet on the very last line was an asterix and the words Not suitable for engine cranking . interesting due to the fact that all the other specs hinted at engine start ability. Some of the charging abilities are controlled by the alternator regulator set voltage. 14.4-14.9v is the preferred voltage range but there plenty of cars out there that may only have 13.8 v available resulting in the battery never fully charged. Not a matter of just taking longer, but not sufficient voltage to get up there where it needs to be. Regarding questions about warrantee and who pays what, a simple phone call to all the suppliers can clear up any doubts, and I'm sure that they will give you something in writing to give you the confidence to buy from them. Most of us can make a call anywhere in Aus for the cost of a local call. If not then you can always contact the sellers on their web site. No cost! To complicate things for the buyer, there is so many new technologies. Li ion (Not real safe in Automotive applications) LiPO4 (currently most of the new stuff ) and Li Titanite ( Greatest thing since sliced bread) Fire safe, best temp. range, 3.2v per cell , high charging and discharging rates for automotive applications. Looking through other KZbins, there are people knocking this or that brand, but quite often the problems that appear are caused by lack of knowledge and understanding of the needs of the battery and the needs of the application, and all chemistry have maximums and minimums when it comes to overcharge, undercharge, DOD (depth of discharge.) You can't take them down 100% DOD, around 90% is usually ok. Read the spec for your battery. Sorry I've rambled so long but as the costs are so high that you need all the facts . Regards, Peter Smith Retired Electronics Tech.⚡

I heard the same from others having to pay for postage back with warranty claims. One major requirement for me at the time when I was shopping around was warranty procedures and who pays freight. With Itechworld being in WA and I’m in QLD the other side of the country, might as well be another country. If they not covered postage costs for warranty claims I was going to look elsewhere. So I called them and was told that I would not have to pay for freight if a warranty claim was made. They will cover the cost. For That reason and the sale on at the time I purchased the 120X I don’t know what’s going on now. Because they appear to backflip on what I was told on the phone. Not to many Lithiums out there that will handle a 2000 watt inverter. You really have to do your research. Not even the Itechworld 120X will handle a 2000w inverter. I own a 1600w Victron inverter and it can’t handle that. Most I would use on a Itechworld 120X is 1300 watts inverter. The DCS can handle the 2000w inverter. I think off all the batteries I’ve considered the DCS is the best. Since I’ve filmed this, there are other lithium batteries serviced in the market that will handle a 2000w inverter but you have to search for them. A good one just released from Amptron. It’s claimed to handle 175 amps continuous and it’s only $975.00. I think at this stage it’s the best valued lithium in Australia. It should handle your 2000w inverter. Available from Perth Pro. But make sure it’s the right one , they have another one that looks the same a little cheaper that can’t handle much more than what your solar king can.

I never said that. however a screen shot shows a 160a agm weighs 45kg. I agree with this. agm of that size would easily weigh 45kg

don't buy battery, build it. you can have it for fraction of the price, if you know how. it's not that difficult.

Yeah nah, Itechworld is as dodgy as they come. Its well documented they lie about their battery specs and their after sales service is pathetic.

Agree. I did not know this at the time of filming. I found out quickly after purchase.
